THE KARLOVY VARY FESTIVAL TO HONOR ACADEMY AWARD-WINNING DIRECTOR BARRY LEVINSON At this year’s Karlovy Vary festival, screenwriter-producer-director Barry Levinson, who won an Academy Award for Rain Man, will accept the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema. The Karlovy Vary festival continues its tradition of recognizing the most important personalities of world cinema, the likes of which include directors William Friedkin, Jerry Schatzberg, and Ken Loach, and screenwriter Paul Laverty. In his writing and directing capacity, Academy Award winner and five-time nominee Barry Levinson deftly combines personal stories with an often satirical look at society, and his movies have fundamentally influenced numerous young filmmakers. Barry Levinson established himself as a writer of successful television shows. With his onetime wife, Valerie Curtin, he then wrote the movie script for Norman Jewison’s courtroom drama …and justice for all (1979), which brought them an Oscar nomination. He debuted as a director with the comedy-drama Diner (1982), receiving his second Oscar nomination for the script. Ivan Král, a Czech musician based in the US, co- wrote the film music. Subsequent titles confirmed his reputation with critics and audiences: The Natural (1984) with Robert Redford, Tin Men (1987) with Richard Dreyfuss and Danny DeVito, and Good Morning, Vietnam (1987) with Robin Williams. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the legendary picture Rain Man (1988), awarded four Oscars (e.g. Best Director for Barry Levinson) and numerous other honors, including the Golden Bear at the Berlinale and the David di Donatello for Best Foreign Film.

This new version adapted from the original J.M. Barrie play and novel by Trevor Nunn and John Caird for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre of London enjoyed phenomenal success when first produced. The famous team known for their productions of THE LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF NICHOLAS NICKLEBY and the musical LES MISERABLES have painstakingly researched and restored Barrie’s original play. “. .a national masterpiece.”—London Times. This is the beloved story of Peter, Wendy, Michael, John, Capt. Hook, Smee, the lost boys, pirates, and the Indians, and of course, Tinker Bell, in their adventures in Never Land. However, for the first time, the play is here restored to Barrie’s original intentions. In the words of adaptor, John Caird: “ We were fascinated to discover that there was no one single document called PETER PAN. What we found was a tantalizing number of different versions, all of them containing some very agreeable surprises….We have made some significant alterations, the greatest of which is the introduction of a new character, the Storyteller, who is in fact the author himself.” North’s theatre director, Ron Parker, states, “This is a very different PETER PAN than the one most people are familiar with. It is neither the popular musical version nor the Disney animated recreation, but goes back to Barrie’s original play and novel.

  • Popularization in Fiennes's Coriolanus
Journal of Student Writing Number 35 Sight, Sound, and News: Popularization in Fiennes’s Coriolanus Tilly Jackson he genre of Shakespeare on film has caused much controversy over the years, with film critics and academics at once decrying it as “de- T volution of Shakespeare” (Boose and Burt 18) and applauding it as a “site for innovation in the style, substance, and practice of modern per- formance” (Worthen 2). Over the past 25 years or so, however, this genre has proven itself all the more controversial by popularization, the tech- nique of modernizing Shakespeare and casting movie stars instead of trained Shakespearean stage actors in an effort to break new ground with the centuries-old playtexts as well as bring the classic works to a larger, younger audience. This has been called the “Hollywoodization of Shake- speare in the 1990s” (Boose and Burt 8). Perhaps the most striking popu- larized film adaptations of Shakespeare’s works are the tragedies, recon- structed into sweeping epics with distinctly modern twists. Radical exam- ples include Baz Luhrmann’s media-filled William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet (1996) and Al Pacino’s theatre documentary, Looking for Richard (1996). Discussing such films in A Companion to Shakespeare’s Works, Mark Thornton Burnett remarks that [...] contemporary versions of the tragedies contemplate the burdens of textuality and meditate self-consciously upon their own existence. At the same time, they push at the boundaries of the Shakespearean, feeding from their immediate contexts and from each other in generically variegated, visually arresting, technically versatile, and media-fashioned realizations of the dramatic originals.
