Theatre Boosters Epiphany Lutheran Church Alter Faculty and Staff Salon Noir Alter’s Fine Arts Department Jason Hamen Lourdes Lambert Molly Lamperis Debbie Portman Bobby Morgan Sean McDaniel The Human Race Norm Rich Wright State University Key Club Jeff Smith Optimist Club Bellbrook-Sherwin Williams DIRECTORS NOTE The musical's core theme is love and tells the story of a sacrificial love of one laying down one's life for another. With this story, we cannot help but be reminded of the gift we receive in the love of God shown to us through Christ, who gave his life for us. St. Paul shares with the church in Rome that "while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8)." This love of God is an "agape" love - a love that has the ability to love unconditionally despite the meanness of this world, because of sin. In this musical, the main character embodies this love - the agape love of Christ, who went to the cross for us and for our salvation. The musical is an enchanting fable set on a island, where poor peasants believe their world is dictated by the gods of Earth, Water, Love and Death. We are transported to this island where social prejudice divides the people. Presented as a “play within a play”, a cast of village storytellers, attempting to calm a frightened young child, tell the romantic tale of a peasant girl who saves a rich city boy from death and of their forbidden love between people from two different worlds. In this show, the story is told in a culture of the Island, where they (the people) prayed to many gods. And yet, behind these gods, the real God shines through. God's love shines through the main character despite her prayers to the many and not The One, for behind the many is The One. This story is pointing to something greater, more wonderful than we people could imagine or deserve in a culture that thinks of love only in selfish "me first" terms. Love is laying down one's life. "God is love." And that is why this story can be told with boldness - because it is a God Love Story of laying down one's life, even though the person she died for did not deserve it. Just like Christ laying down his life for all of us, even though we did not deserve it. That is an amazing story! -
