>California= Dreaming... A beautiful sunrise with shades of pink provided a spectacular backdrop as 5-2 GI Kentucky Derby morning-line favorite California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) stepped onto the fast main track on a brisk morning just before 7 a.m. at Churchill Downs Thursday. Just as he=s done all week, the flashy chestnut remained as cool as ever with his ears pricked forward as he set up shop along the outer rail. While the GI Santa Anita Derby hero went on his extended tour of the paddock for the second straight day, GIII Southwest S. hero Tapiture (Tapit) entered the track accompanied by trainer Steve Asmussen via stable pony at 7:17 a.m. Upon his return, California Chrome got a tad aggressive and began tossing his head a bit entering the backstretch as he caught wind of a pair of workers to his inside. He quickly regained his composure beneath Willy Delgado and was all business during the remainder of his 1 1/2-mile gallop. With the iconic Twin Spires to his back, trainer Art Sherman met the Perry Martin and Steve Coburn homebred at the gap with an inviting smile on his face as a slew of media photographed and recorded his every move.

Swale cont. "If he breaks decent and gets into the first turn decent, fourth or fifth, I'll be in good shape," Stephens, who was hospitalized in Louisville from Apr. 22 until the day before the Derby, told Sports Illustrated, referring to the race strategy. "I have a top rider on him. If he goes into the backstretch within striking distance, he'll be tough to beat." Sent off as the 34-10 second choice behind the favored entry of Life=s Magic and Althea beneath the Twin Spires, Swale left running from post position 15 and settled in third as Althea galloped along on a comfortable early pace before improving into second turning up the backstretch. Althea took them along through six furlongs in 1:11 4/5, but Pincay sent Swale to the front entering the far turn, went further clear in upper stretch and galloped home a much-the-best winner as Coax Me Chad closed for second from At The Threshold (video, chart). "Passing the quarter pole, he felt very strong," Pincay told SI. "He was pricking his ears. When I showed him the whip, he was really responding," he added. Swale would go on to post a puzzling seventh in the GI Preakness S. two weeks later ahead of a stirring four-length victory in the GI Belmont S. Though he was taken from the racing establishment much too soon, for that one day, that first Saturday of May, 1984, he ruled the world.

PROS: Was knocking at the door towards the tail end of his 2-year-old season, but has really come into his own this term, highlighted by his last-lunge victory in the GII Risen Star S... He should appreciate the long Churchill stretch the same way he took advantage of the final two furlongs at the Fair Grounds... Hails from a top trainer/jockey combination, each of whom have a Derby victory to their credit in the last four years (albeit, not together)... Has made a striking impression during morning track work and seems to have Hodges Photography come on for his runner-up effort behind Vicar=s in Trouble in the Louisiana Derby. CONS: Though he finished a clear second last time in New Orleans, he was without a significant excuse... His failiure/inability to switch his leads is well-noted, as is a habit to cross-fire behind, something that could compromise his finishing kick... Seems to be one of the buzz horses on the grounds, which could suppress his starting price by a few points. PEDIGREE: His late sire won the GI Florida Derby and was sent off the 6-1 favorite in the 1999 Run for the Roses, where he finished seventh... His dam--by the 1996 Derby post-time favorite--was unplaced in five runs and is a half-sister to SW and MGSP Her She Kisses (Dehere) and to four-time Grade III winner Crafty Shaw (Crafty Prospector). VERDICT: If he is able to maintain a straight course and if he turns in one of his more professional efforts, there is no reason he can=t be part of the finish. He should sit a mid-pack trip and can get first run if an expected pace meltdown occurs. Live in most pools.

PROS: Late Derby addition has a similar profile to last year=s 34-1 runner-up and fellow Dallas Stewart trainee Golden Soul (Perfect Soul {Ire}). Both entered Derby off fast-closing finishes in the Louisiana Derby... Third in that Fair Grounds showpiece Mar. 29, Commanding Curve was squeezed back at the start and perhaps further compromised in the lane when weaving through horses to nearly catch favored Intense Holiday (Harlan=s Holiday) for second. PROS: Although asked prematurely, the homebred showed off a nice turn-of-foot in the GI CashCall Futurity and again in his GII Robert B. Lewis victory... Well-beaten third in the Santa Anita Derby, but was coming off a two-month break and was, perhaps, a bit rusty... The John Sadler trainee garnered a good amount of attention Saturday with his five- panel breeze in 1:00.80 at Churchill... Hall of Fame pilot Gary Stevens, who will be looking for his fourth Derby win, will be in the irons. CONS: Candy Boy has gotten decent set Benoit Photo ups in his last three starts... He just held for third in the GI Santa Anita Derby, never seriously threatening California Chrome or Hoppertunity, and looked fairly gassed in the gallop out. PEDIGREE: Dam She=s an Eleven is a stakes winner at 1 1/16 miles and stakes-placed second dam She=s a Sensation (Flying Sensation) is a half-sister to GI Test S. victress Leave Me Alone (Bold Badgett)... Candy Ride has never sired a Classic winner, but relished this trip in the 2003 GI Pacific Classic and was responsible for fellow Sadler trainee Twirling Candy, who was narrowly beaten twice in 1 1/4-mile Grade Is. VERDICT: With his tactics and connections, the overlooked California invader could get a piece at a price.

PROS: Has run creditably from on or just off the pace, but showed a different dimension in the GI Arkansas Derby last time to rally from far back--a tactic that could work well in this spot and that he used when finishing a close third behind Havana (Dunkirk) and Honor Code (A.P. Indy) in last October=s GI Champagne S... He=s raced over the Louisville oval before when third in last summer=s Street Sense S., and trainer Billy Gowan=s string is stabled at Churchill during the summer, so he=s used to the track and these surroundings... Plus he gets the services of three-time Derby-winning pilot Calvin Borel, who Horsephotos always seems to move up his mounts in the Run for the Roses... Holds the 5 1/2- furlong track record at Ellis Park. CONS: Ride on Curlin has won just twice and never against stakes company or around two turns... While he rallied for the place spot last time at Oaklawn, he was never getting to longshot winner Danza. PEDIGREE: Sire Curlin was third in the 2007 Kentucky Derby and annexed the GI Preakness S. before being narrowly beaten by Rags to Riches in the GI Belmont. He sired a Classic winner in last year=s Belmont victor Palace Malice... Ride On Curlin is the third foal out of GSP Magical Ride. His second dam Victory Ride (Seeking the Gold) won the GI Test S. at seven furlongs and was runner-up in the GI Acorn S. at a mile. VERDICT: Ride On Curlin didn=t quite have enough in his last three starts against a number of these foes. Without major improvement, he won=t be a factor--but you never know when Borel is in the irons.

J: R Napravnik. - 20-1 BD: One of many who has done his best work on the lead--hard to expect him to rate effectively after a disappointing effort off the pace in the Risen Star--especially from dreaded one hole… Last year’s standout sons of Into Mischief, Goldencents and Vyjack, both proved distance limited, and this one looks destined for a similar fate. SS: Has run some pretty fast races while drumming the competition in the LeComte & Louisiana Derby... Late lead changes and capability of getting the Classic distance are a major concern here though... His name says it all.

#2 HARRY’S HOLIDAY (c, Harlan’s Holiday--Daisy Mason, by Orientate) - T: M Maker. J: C Lanerie. - 50-1 SS: Unless your name is Harry, you have no business wagering on this horse. BD: Way better on synth and even that form doesn’t put him close.

#3 UNCLE SIGH (c, Indian Charlie--Cradlesong, by Pine Bluff) - T: G Contessa. J: I Ortiz Jr. - 30-1 SS: Lost a pair of epic throwdowns over the Big A inner, then was a bit exposed when failing to overcome some adversity in the Wood...Think he’ll be saying ‘Uncle’ well before the real running begins here. BD: Samraat kind of had his number this winter, but Uncle Sigh may be better suited of the two for this distance--half bro Percussion is GSP at 12f, and another sib was a monster going 1 3/16 miles at Will Rogers Downs (!)… Not much went right in the Wood, but he’s a marginal contender with a better trip.

#4 DANZA (c, Street Boss--Champagne Royale, by French Deputy) - T: T Pletcher. J: J Bravo. - 8-1 BD: One of several whose Gulfstream form is probably excusable… Showed promise when patiently ridden to a close third in last year’s Saratoga Special, and absolutely aired last time with an admittedly perfect trip in the Arkansas Derby… Despite that dream run, it’s hard not to be extremely impressed with what he did that day--showed off an excellent turn-of-foot and looked like he was just getting started at nine furlongs… Sire Street Boss never went past 7f, but is by top route stallion Street Cry; and this colt is a half to Majestic Harbor, recent winner of the GIII Tokyo City at 1 1/2 miles… Wish he had more seasoning, but maybe that’s too much to ask for in 2014. SS: Easily one of the trickiest reads in the field... Shocked the world with an authoritative 41-1 upset in the Arkansas Derby while making his first attempt around two turns, jumping up an astounding 23 Beyer points from his sophomore debut a month earlier... Physical impression since settling in at Churchill Downs makes him awfully hard to dismiss.

#5 CALIFORNIA CHROME (c, Lucky Pulpit--Love the Chase, by Not For Love) - T: A Sherman. J: V Espinoza. - 5-2 BD: Good chance I’ll end up regretting this, but I’m tossing the favorite completely… He just strikes me as the type of horse who is too flashy and quick for his own good going 10 panels against 19 other horses… Wasn’t anything spectacular facing mostly Cal-bred company in his first eight starts, but has run two gigantic races while showing more speed. That’s not going to work here. SS: Agreed... Certainly worthy of favoritism off his consecutive tour-de-force wins in the San Felipe & Santa Anita Derby with top-shelf Beyers, but with plenty of additional speed signed on at this increased trip with a full field, think he’s a play against as the chalk in his first attempt outside of the Golden State.

#6 SAMRAAT (c, Noble Causeway--Little Indian Girl, by Indian Charlie) - T: R Violette Jr. J: J Ortiz. - 15-1 SS: Not sure what was behind him when he was running his record to five-for-five this winter at the Big A, but he did show up with another solid effort in the Wood... NY-bred with tactical speed should sit a nice trip if he’s good enough... That’s a pretty big if, though. BD: Think he probably proved to be a cut below in the Wood, and not sure he’s a real 10-furlong horse… Can’t use them all.

#7 WE MISS ARTIE (c, Artie Schiller--Athena’s Gift, by Fusaichi Pegasus) - T: T Pletcher. J: J Castellano. - 50-1 SS: You really didn’t think that Mr. Ramsey would let Todd talk him out of entering after that dull work, did you?... Hard to see him making an impact... Queen’s Plate winner? BD: His sire and dam were both grass horses, and this colt gives every indication that he has the same preferences… His two worst finishes were on the dirt, and his turf and synth efforts are much too slow anyway… Plus that work Sunday hurt my eyes. #8 GENERAL A ROD (c, Roman Ruler--Dynamite Eyes, by Dynaformer) - T: M Maker. J: J Rosario. - 15-1 BD: Have been a fan of his all year, but just can’t find any major excuse for his third last time in the Florida Derby. He covered more ground than Wildcat Red (20 ft., approx. 2 1/4 lengths according to Trakus), sure, but he didn’t run like a horse calling out for more real estate… Could sit the trip and get first run on the closers, but just feels like he’s not quite good enough… Using only protectively if at all. SS: Think my subconscious has made me dislike this horse from Day 1 just because of his name (yes, I’m a Mets fan)... Has shown up in every career attempt, most recently coming up a bit short while a close third in the Florida Derby... Not impossible--just looks a cut below the top contenders.

#9 VINCEREMOS (c, Pioneerof the Nile--Kettle’s Sister, by More Than Ready) - T: T Pletcher. J: J Rocco Jr. - 30-1 BD: Thought he had a very advantageous trip when taking a somewhat sub-par running of the GIII Sam F. Davis S., and got another dream run in the Tampa Bay Derby, but just couldn’t run down the freewheeling Ring Weekend… Enters off a last-place finish in the Blue Grass--not seeing it. SS: Even if you give him a pass for the Blue Grass, his prior dirt form isn't good enough... Next.

#10 WILDCAT RED (c, D’wildcat--Racene, by Miner’s Mark) - T: J Garoffalo: J: L Saez. - 15-1 SS: Tough customer continues to prove everyone wrong with each game effort as the trip increases, but it has to end somewhere, right? Pretty crazy that his dam won going 1 1/4 miles on grass, but this isn’t the race for him. BD: He’s a very game horse, but has close to zero chance of seeing out 10 furlongs (despite some stamina help on his dam’s side)--especially away from Gulfstream Park Speedway… Speed is his main weapon, but will get him in lots of trouble here… With a full field and plenty of other quick horses, he’s very much up against it.

#11 HOPPERTUNITY (c, Any Given Saturday--Refugee, by Unaccounted For) - T: B Baffert. J: M Smith. - SCR SS: Couldn't be more bummed by his late defection... Really thought that he was sitting on a huge effort. BD: Similarly disappointed by his absence... Seemed like one of the horses with the least knocks in the race (despite the dreaded ‘Curse of ’ ), but hope he can bounce back quickly... Would actually prefer to see him bypass the Preakness for the Belmont--think he’d be very tough at 1 1/2 miles.

#12 DANCE WITH FATE (c, Two Step Salsa--Flirting With Fate, by Saint Ballado) - T: P Eurton. J: C Nakatani. - 20-1 SS: Can’t blame his connections for catching some Derby fever after his visually impressive tally in the Blue Grass... Don’t know if the big turn-of-foot that he’s flashed on turf/synthetic will translate to dirt going 1 1/4 miles, though... Bright future, just not the Derby winner. BD: Trainer was hesitant immediately after the Blue Grass win to commit to the Derby, and probably for good reason… Nice horse, but looks like his future is on turf at shorter distances than this... Do fear him slightly more than I would have due to glowing morning reports, though.

#13 CHITU (c, Henny Hughes--Sea Gift, by A.P. Indy) - T: B Baffert. J: M Garcia. - 20-1 BD: Doesn’t really run like he’s dying to go 1 1/4 miles, but he does have a very strong dam side pedigree for the distance. A.P. Indy dam won at 10f, second dam was a GSW at 9f and third dam produced the MGSW dam of last year's St Leger winner Leading Light… Still seems like he’s in too deep, though. SS: Despite the gaudy speed figure, it felt like the stretch run was taking place in slow motion in the Sunland Derby... A little too light on foundation for my liking and can’t see him staying on at this distance.

#14 MEDAL COUNT (c, Dynaformer--Brisquette, by Unbridled’s Song) - T: D Romans. J: R Albarado. - 20-1 BD: The whole “turf horses take to Churchill” thing is in part due to trainer Dale Romans’s success here with the likes of Paddy O’Prado, Dullahan and Cleburne/Smart Cover… Has a sprint-oriented pedigree on bottom, but hard to imagine a son of Dynaformer who runs like he does won’t see out the trip… Three starts in a month, but he seems like a sturdy type and there’s nothing wrong with that in the Derby… Big chance at a nice price. SS: Is he coming into his own or does he really just love Keeneland’s Polytrack? I’m leaning toward the latter, but it’s hard not to respect what Romans has done with grass/synthetic types in recent Derbies... His debut in an Ellis off-the-turfer last summer was visually impressive ( a watch) if that means anything, but he has to answer for his poor efforts in the BC Juvenile & FOY... Reluctantly tossing.

#15 TAPITURE (c, Tapit--Free Spin, by Olympio) - T: S Asmussen. J: R Santana Jr. - 12-1 SS: Graded winner over the course at two was pretty hyped prior to his incredibly disappointing fourth in the Arkansas Derby... Hard to visualize this headstrong son of Tapit benefitting from the increased real estate here... Pass. BD: Thought he was a bit dressed up off an easy trip in the Southwest and overblown trouble in the Rebel… Exposed in the Arkansas Derby, and didn’t like how he was keen that day. TDN/TwinSpires.com P 2014 KENTUCKY DERBY CHEAT SHEET • PAGE 3 of 3

#16 INTENSE HOLIDAY (c, Harlan’s Holiday--Intensify, by Unbridled’s Song) - T: T Pletcher. J: J Velazquez. - 8-1 SS: Didn’t sit his preferred trip when a well-beaten second as the chalk with trouble in the Louisiana Derby and a repeat of his come-from-behind win in the Risen Star makes him a legit contender here... Solid five-race foundation at two is very nice to have on the resume... Expecting him to be weaving his way through traffic in the stretch with his eyes on the prize. BD: Was all prepared to put him higher up until I got to the Louisiana Derby replay again. Maybe Steve’s right that he was taken out of his element a bit, but the cross-firing in the stretch leaves a lot to be desired… Vicar’s in Trouble turned him back pretty easily, and while I’d obviously prefer Intense Holiday here over that one, it makes me less bullish… Probably my sixth choice.

#17 COMMANDING CURVE (r, Master Command--Mother, by Lion Hearted) - T: D Stewart. J: S Bridgmohan. - 50-1 BD: If I hear ‘this year’s Golden Soul’ one more time… Definitely looks like one of those horses who can clunk up for third or fourth, but his most recent work wasn’t very good. SS: Owns a maiden win over the track and enters off a sneaky good third in the Louisiana Derby... After getting burned by Dallas Stewart via Golden Soul (sorry, BD) last year, will at least be including this guy on a few trifecta tickets underneath.

#18 CANDY BOY (c, Candy Ride {Arg}--She’s an Eleven, by In Excess {Ire}) - T: J Sadler. J: G Stevens. - 15-1 SS: May’ve been too fresh for his own good and paid the price after failing to settle in the early stages of the Santa Anita Derby... While that effort has certainly curbed my enthusiasm on the Robert B. Lewis winner to some degree, I was a big enough fan of his prior efforts (starting with his maiden win) that I still think that he’s a major player if he brings his best... Added distance may be just what this long-striding son of Candy Ride is looking for... Giving every impression in his morning preparations at CD that he's ready to run the race of his life. BD: Decent efforts in the CashCall Futurity and Bob Lewis, but didn’t see any real excuse in the Santa Anita Derby--he was just beaten by two better horses… Has a good 2-year-old foundation, but don’t like his conservative handling this year either.

#19 RIDE ON CURLIN (c, Curlin--Magical Ride, by Storm Cat) - T: W Gowan. J: C Borel. - 15-1 SS: Would’ve liked to see him cut into Danza’s margin of victory after making a sweeping move in the Arkansas Derby, but he has certainly run well enough in defeat (with some excuses) in all of his preps at Oaklawn this term... Has the right pilot in the irons to sit back and come flying in the stretch to make an impact. BD: Has definitely had some trip excuses this year--especially in the Southwest, and it looks like his connections have finally decided once and for all that he needs to be taken back to make one run… No secret what kind of trip he’ll get under Borel, and while that might mean he gets overbet, the Hall of Famer has basically made a career off of this track and this race… Distance might be a slight concern, as he’s a grandson of Grade I-winning sprinter/miler Victory Ride, but seems like one of the more interesting price horses.

#20 WICKED STRONG (c, Hard Spun--Moyne Abbey, by Charismatic) - T: J Jerkens. J: R Maragh. - 6-1 SS: Peaking at the right time following breakthrough score in the Wood, love his foundation at two--headed by a strong third in the Remsen--and boasts the proper running style to bring home the roses... Sired by a Kentucky Derby runner-up and also gets plenty of stamina from his extended female family... Has all of the credentials of a Derby winner... Auxiliary gate draw may be a blessing in disguise. BD: If you excuse his two Gulfstream races--and there’s plenty of justification for doing so--his other form is very solid… Close third to Honor Code and Cairo Prince in the Remsen looked super strong at the time, and he finally ran back to that effort in the Wood, albeit with a very easy trip… Could work out a similar journey here if he can overcome the 20 post, and is obviously a major contender.

#21 PABLO DEL MONTE (c, Giant’s Causeway--One Hot Wise, by Bring the Heat) - T: W Ward. J: J Sanchez. - 20-1 BD: Won’t like the surface or the distance, but adds fuel to the fire. SS: Even with the unfortunate defection of Hoppertunity, he's still on the outside looking in.
