MN Knightly News Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest October 2014 Time to Order Kits page 13 Now is the time for our councils, districts, and regions to be getting organized for the Free Throw Contest. For the councils this means getting your Free Throw Championship Kit (FT-KIT). Use the order form at kofc.org/forms or in the Council Report Forms Booklet (#1436) or call the Department of Fraternal Services at 203-752-4270. The kit has many ideas on getting set up, finding contacts, and holding the contests -- along with the rules. There are 75 Score Sheet and Entry forms in the kit, but you can make copies or order two kits. Finally, you can find all the forms and the instruction book on the Supreme website.

I hope you are lining up your contacts and talking about reserving your times for your council free throw contest. Remember that council contests must be done by the end of January so district contests can be scheduled for mid-February and regional contests scheduled for late February. The State Free Throw Contest will be held on March 28, 2015 in the St. Cloud area. I am looking for a larger facility this coming year. I also want to encourage our councils, districts, and regions to continue to communicate with each other on their dates so you can get even more young people participating and follow them all the way to St. Cloud for the State Contest. Harrison Christenson of Browerville International Winner Boys Age 13 Minnesota had two International winners from last year including one with a perfect Sponsoring Council 3663 score and I had the honor of being there as our Worthy State Deputy presented the awards to them in Browerville and St. Paul. We both were able to meet two wonderful families. One of the fathers signed on to become a Knight. He was surprised to learn how many programs the Knights of Columbus have to offer for our youth and communities. So, the free throw was a recruiting opportunity.

Finally I am looking for a couple of people to work with me in the next couple of years and take over as the chairman. I will always be involved with the Free Throw Contest but I am ready to take on a new challenge or role within the Knights of Columbus. Call me if you are interested.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE – A Culture of Life Activity Culture of Life Activities Director John Bowlin [email protected] (651) 483-1877

40 Days for Life is a focused prolife campaign with a vision to access God’s power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion. The mission of the campaign is to bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of unity during a focused 40 day campaign of prayer, fasting, and peaceful activism, with the purpose of repentance, to seek God’s favor to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion. The visible, public centerpiece of 40 Days for Life is a focused 40-day prayer vigil, outside a single Planned Parenthood center or other abortion facility in the community. www.40daysforlife.com

Several Catholic churches, Knights of Columbus councils, and Christian churches are currently planning to once again come together in prayer from September 24 - November 2, for 40 Days for Life at the mega Planned Parenthood center in St. Paul, near University Ave. on Vandalia St.

Since the 40 Days for Life movement began in 2004, prayer vigils have made a significant impact across our country; eighty- eight abortion workers have quit their jobs, including three Planned Parenthood center managers, who now participate in the 40 Days for Life efforts outside their former workplaces, and forty-three abortion facilities have closed and gone out of business, following 40 days for Life campaigns in front of their doors. www.40daysforlife.com

People have returned back to God with a renewed sense of hope. Prayer is powerful.

Knights of Columbus councils are encouraged to team with their parishes’ Respect for Life ministry in promoting participation. Together, they can recruit captains and parish participants using sign-up sheets for each hourly time slot at the vigil site. In conjunction with their PPC prayer vigil, many churches offer hourly adoration for parishioners who are unable to attend the vigil site. Prayer is the answer.

This culture of life activity will qualify as one of the four activities required on the Columbian Award application SP-7 for councils.

Word of mouth is sometimes the best method to getting something done. Brothers Greg Mencke, Bob Spangenberg and his wife Karen have that gift. These three organized a 90 mile road trip for three consecutive Wednesdays to a farm in Wisconsin. Because we picked on Wednesdays, the crews were made up of mostly retired Knights. The farmer, Brian Hopp, and his wife, Mary, are neighbors to Karen’s daughter. For years they have been donating some of their sweet corn to local food shelves, but this year they had a bumper crop and not enough manpower to pick it. Thanks to these generous farmers, who also helped pick and feed the crew lunch, and the manpower provided by the Knights, a total of 12,050 pounds of sweet corn (about 1,500 dozen ears of corn!) were delivered to Second Harvest Heartland in Maplewood MN, who supply over 1,000 food shelves, pantries, and other agencies in a 59 county area in Minnesota and western Wisconsin. A total of 12 people contributed 134 hours to this effort. God is truly a-MAZE-ing! Volunteer Appreciation Event

The Kick off of Transfiguration’s 75th anniversary year was on their parish feast day Aug 6 with a cookout. Local businessman, Brother Knight Ed Gorman, donated ice cream and Council 4374 did the cooking and donated 240 ears of corn (for what was thought to be for 200 people). They started serving at 6:00, and had to go get extra burgers. In total, they served 360 burgers, 320 hot dogs, and 240 ears of corn. The crowd was estimated at about 650-700. About 22 Knights volunteered their services in cooking, serving, and cleaning up. Honor Guard at Maronite Mass

Saturday, September 13th, Patriarch Bechara Peter Cardinal Rai celebrated Liturgy at Holy Family Church in Mendota Heights.

It was also the last mass of their current pastor, the official introduction of their new pastor, and the Exaltation of the Cross.

Patriarch Rai resides in Bkerke, Lebanon and was in the United States attending a Summit of the Defense of Christians in the Middle East in Washington, D.C.

Attending members of the Knights of Columbus and the honor guard were from around the state of Minnesota -- many of which were in town to attend the Master’s Ball later that evening.

It was a beautiful mass and a new experience for some of us in attendance. If you have never experienced an Eastern Rites Mass, we encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity if it arises.

Columbian Squires ~ What Do They Do? How Do We Start a Squires Circle? Squires Chairman Deacon Lyle Johnson [email protected] (218) 724-7431

What do Columbian Squires do?

Columbian Squires are the youth organization of the Knights of Columbus for young men 10-18 years of age. Squires are organized in local groups called Circles. Each Circle is sponsored by a Council or Assembly, which provides counselors who guide the Squires. Elected officers are assisted by the counselors, but are encouraged to be adventurous and self-sufficient on their own. Squires typically have a monthly meeting, which is run by the Chief Squire. If you were to attend a business meeting, investiture, or honor guard procession for the Columbian Squires, you would notice many similarities to the Knights of Columbus.

So what else do Squires do? The sky is the limit! Squires plan and organize activities, service projects, and other events. Go as a group to a Saints baseball game. Head up to the Boundary Waters. Organize a combination bike ride/camping trip, fishing trips, tours of historic churches, museums, etc. Help with the parish festival by operating a booth or assist the Knights in a pancake breakfast. Head up a coat or shoe drive to send to disadvantaged children in another part of the world, donate to Sharing and Caring Hands, or sign up for a time at Feed My Starving Children. Do a service project to help with the upkeep of the church grounds. Hold a Squire fundraiser like “Hire a Squire” and rake leaves in the autumn. Be a part of the honor guard and lead a Rosary procession up Boulevard to the Cathedral of St. Paul. The opportunities are limited only by the boys' imaginations, which is part of what makes this program so great, and along the way they are developing the skills to be faithful leaders for the next generation.

How do we start a Columbian Squire Circle?

It’s a lot easier than you think. Start by identifying the need to offer a program to boys ages 10 – 18 that will give them opportunities to grow in their Catholic faith, as well as instilling in them a sense of service and giving back to their church and community. That’s the Squires. The best part? You don’t have to create a new program; the Knights of Columbus has already done this. Many materials are readily available, including a Squire Advancement program, which Squires work on with their families and in the Circle. The highest rank a Squire can attain is Squire of the Body of Christ.

Talk with your grand knight, youth director, and parish pastor about the need for a Catholic youth program, fully supported by the Knights of Columbus, how it could be a great asset to the parish, and all the great projects and activities it could offer to the youth. Your pastor will likely respond with, “You had me when you said the Knights.”

Next, identify a few Knights to serve as counselors and begin recruiting the young men. A minimum of 10 boys are needed to start a new Circle. See any recruitment opportunities coming out of this organization? Fathers of Squires make great Knights!

You can learn more about starting a Squire program by contacting me or visiting the KC Supreme website at kofc.org

Pictures from the new St. Michael Parish Rectory in St. Michael Albertville

Built by local Knights of Columbus Council 4174

See a Need ~ Fill a Need

Sunday, September 14th we journeyed to St. Michael- Albertville to attend the open house for the new parish rectory built by Council 4174 for their priests in St. Michael and Monticello. The old rectory needed to be replaced due to mold and other issues, so the Knights gladly took on the project, worked with the architect, raised the money, and did a lot of the work on this house.

One of their most successful fundraisers was the sale of the personalized pavers you see in the picture in the bottom left- hand corner of this page. These were then used in the walkway to the house. They serve as a testament to the many people who gave their time, money, talents, and supplies to make this dream a reality in just one year.

A great deal of thought and effort went into this project: from the 3 steps into the house representing the Trinity; to constructing the rectory around the tabernacle in the chapel of the house -- it contains may pieces from the original St. Michael Church; to providing handicap accessibility; to inserting a blessed medal of Pope John Paul II (now Saint John Paul the Great) in the foundation.

The Knights of St. Michael-Albertville and all the parishioners of St. Michael are very proud of this accomplishment, as they well should be, and their priests feel very blessed to be supported by their local council in this and many other ways. Father told us he has many ideas for more projects for the Knights in the future, and we are certain these gentlemen are ready to begin!

For Families Since this program is rooted in prayer, the first step is to set aside a space in your home as a prayer corner. Include “A Family Prayer,” composed by Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori in your daily prayers.

A Family Prayer Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of our family. Enlighten our hearts and minds that we may live more fully this vocation of love. In our daily life and work, may we reflect the self-giving love which you, O Father, eternally show with your Son and the Holy Spirit. Let your love be evident in the peace that reigns in our home and in the faith we profess and live. May our family always be a place of generosity, understanding, forgiveness and joy.

Kindly give us the wisdom and courage to be witnesses to your eternal design for the family; and grant that the Holy Family of Nazareth may always guide our path to holiness as a family. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen .

October’s Monthly Theme Because the Lord is the God of our ancestors, we want to strengthen the relationships between our family’s generations. Our family defines each and every one of us. Because our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents chose life, we are here today. Take this month as an opportunity to celebrate your family history and learn more about it, all while thanking God.

October’s Family Projects Making a family tree is a great way to learn where you came from and celebrate your ancestry. During this month, make time to sit down as a family to build your family tree. See how far back you can trace. You can decorate your tree with copies of old photos and era-related items.

Bring some joy to your grandparents or some other relative who does not live nearby, or may be alone, by sending a “Thinking of You” card signed by your whole family. You can also send a video of your family to this relative, or call them to pray the rosary so they can join in. Set aside time to regularly visit the graves of deceased relatives and to pray for them.

Bring Song Into Your Home ~ Sing grace before meals with your whole family. Ubi Caritas (Taize chant), Ubi caritas et amor, Ubi caritas, Deus ibi est. (Where there are charity and love, God is there.)

October’s Psalm of the Month (Psalm 105) Pray this every Sunday of the month at your family prayer space.

O give thanks to the Lord, call on his name, make known his deeds among the peoples! Sing to him, sing praises to him, tell of all his wonderful works! Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice! Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his presence continually! Remember the wonderful works that he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered, O offspring of Abraham his servant, sons of Jacob, his chosen ones! He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth. He is mindful of his covenant for ever, of the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations, the covenant which he made with Abraham, his sworn promise to Isaac, which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant, saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan as your portion for an inheritance.”

On the last Sunday of the month, discuss as a family which verse stood out most for each member.

October’s Monthly Meditation on Family Life Because the Lord is the God of our ancestors, we want to strengthen the relationships between our family’s generations. For the Christian community the family is far more than a “theme”: it is life, it is the daily fabric of life, it is the journey of generations who pass on the faith together with love and with the basic moral values. It is concrete solidarity, effort, patience, and also a project, hope, a future. All this which the Christian community lives out in the light of faith, hope, and charity, should never be kept to oneself but must become, every day, the leaven in the dough of the whole of society for its greater common good.

Hope and a future presuppose memory. The memory of our elderly people sustains us as we journey on. The future of society … is rooted in the elderly and in the young: the latter, because they have the strength and are of the age to carry history ahead; the former, because they are a living memory. A people that does not take care of its elderly, its children, and its youth has no future, because it abuses both memory and promise. 1. Who is one person in my family whose faith shaped my own faith? 2. What are some ways our family tries to live out belief in God and his Church? 3. Which virtue seems to be particularly strong in our family — faith, hope, or charity? 4. Why is memory important to the future? 5. What strengths do the children in our family have?
