Singingin the closest of harmony and squabbling boyishly over the smallest intonations, the Plaids are a guaranteed smash with a series of well-loved songs and right-on patter that keeps audi- ences laughing when they're not humming alongto some of the great nostalgic pophits of the '50s.

, , , October 9 - 20,2002 Be by Popular Demand Book by Stuart Ross

This frenetic entertainmentis long on shtick and historical hilarity. It is staged as a backers' audition for an 83.5-million-dollartwelve-hour stagehistory of the world from creation to the present. Eighteen side-splitting numbers, performed by two actors, portraying Adam and Eve, Attila the Hun, thebuilding of the pyramids, Julius Caesar and Columbus, amongothers, give potential investors ataste of the impending extravaganza. In the process, the opulent Park Avenue apartment"borrowed for the occasion is trashedas the two snatchits furnish- ings to create makeshift costumes while singingand clowning their way through inventive recreations of the past, stopping occasionallyfor a little supplicating showbiz patter. November 13 - 24,2002 Music by Jed Feuer Book and Lyrics by Boyd Graham --- - SubjectroAvailability In this sequel to the ever-popular Smoke on the Mountain, the Sanders family returns to Mount Pleasant, ,on the Christmas Eve of 1941. Reverend Oglethorpe has invited them to the Baptist Church to sing and witness, getting the congregationinto the down-home holiday spirit beforethe boys, including one of the Sanders' own, are shipped off to World War 11. More than two dozen Christmas carols, manyof them vintage hymns, and hilarious yuletide storiesfrom the more or less devout Sanders family keepthe audience laughing, clappingand singing along with bluegrass Christmas favorites. Richly entertain- ing, this wildly infectious musical brings cheerto audiences eager to see how their friends from Smoke on the Mountainhave been gettingalong. Leave A Legacy Planned Giving lnformation Consortium of East Central Illinois

Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life.

The people of East Central Illinois are known for their generosity. But not many area people leave gifts to charity in their wills or estates. With that in mind, area managers of wealth and non-profit organizations established the Planned Giving Information Consortium (PGIC) of East Central Illinois devoted to educating the general public about philanthropy in general and about planned giving in specific. The Little Theatre On The Square is a member of and supports the efforts of this consortium.

Leave A Legacy - PGIC has embarked on an initiative that will help further its mission to educate the public and promote the cause of charitable giving through bequests, lifetime giving with retention of income, and estate plans. Leave A Legacy'sgoal is to remind people that they can make a difference in the lives that follow theirs.

Frequently asked questions: How do I leave a gift for my favorite nonprofit organization?

It's easy. You can arrange for a gift several ways. The most common is through a charitable gift in a will or living trust. Many people set aside a certain dollar amount. Others leave a percentage of their estate or any assets left over after their family has been provided for. Some people donate something they own, like a car or their home. Others leave a paid life insurance policy, retirement account or other financial investment.

Do 1tell the organization that I have left a gift?

That is up to you. Nonprofit organizations like to know in advance so they can recognize your generosity. They can also tell you about specific opportunities for giving.

Must I have a sizable estate in order to leave a gift?

Everyone can leave a gift. "Estatenis simply a word used to describe any amount of money, property or personal belongings that you may have at the time of your death. Most people leave an estate when they die, even though they may not have a great deal of wealth. Many gifts are less than $1,000.

How do I leave a gift to a specific organization?

A charitable bequest will not take effect unless you state your intention in your will or living trust. Without a will you may lose control over your belongings after death. Then, your property and finances are settled according to state laws, whether or not they coincide with your wishes.

Who can help me arrange for a gift?

If you have a professional that you are working with like a financial planner, lawyer, accountant or insurance agent, please talk with them about leaving a gift. A professional can tell you about the tax benefits of planned gifts. You can also call a nonprofit organization directly for assistance. The architecturalfirm of Hance, Utz &Associates of Mattoon, Illinois has presented us with this architect's drawing of the proposed new building that will contain our ticketoffice, administrative offices, concession stand and new dressing roomsfor the performance company. Comments From the Artistic Director

At the end of last season, one of our subscribers wroteme to thank The Little Theatre for "taking us to places he and his wife could never travel to." Such is the magic of live theatre. It transports us to new and exciting places, introducesus to whole new worlds of people; and, if we let it, opens our minds and hearts to new ideas.

This season is a perfect example. First,we visit Victoria Grant, a"woman playing a man playing a woman" in Victor Victoria's "Jazz Hot" Paris of the 1930's. Then, "time- travel" one decade to the romantic South Pacific islands as a southern nurse must con- quer her own racismto find love during World War 11.

The vibrant stage adaptation of one of MGM's most popular movie musicals, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is a delightful battle of the sexes in the Washington mountainsin the 1890's. Then travel to Beaumont, Texas, as ChicagoanRen gets the whole town dancingto the '80's pop hits of Footloose.

One more stop... travel to London in late 1800's as the demonic Mr. Hyde destroys his alter ego Dr. Jekyll in the passionate musical taleJekyll and Hyde.

So, we're off for another exciting seasonof travel as The Little Theatre transportsyou to five new worlds in our 2002 season.

Open your minds and hearts! All Aboard!

Greetings, everyone!

I want to congratulate you and thankyou for participating in the Richard Rodgers Centennial.

My father, Richard Rodgers, adored musical theatre. He loved to tell good stories, and he especially loved the way they could be told in musical theatre --through a potent combination of music, lyrics, dialogue and dance.

He also loved the collaborative spirit that brought all these elements together. No matter how tough the problem, he relished solvingit as long as a stalwart friend like Larry Hart or Oscar Hammerstein was at his side. As a matter of fact, he was much happier collaborating with others than on thoserare occasions when he wrote a song, or a musical, by himself; it just wasn't anyfun for him unless he had a comrade in arms.

But for my father, the ultimate collaboration was betweenthe people doing the show, and the people they were doing it for.

There will be many tributes and honors for Richard Rodgers during his Centennial season, but I know nothing would have meant more to him thanthis performance, right here, right now. By appearing in one of his shows, or by seeing one, you are giving my father the greatest 100th birthday present he could have imagined.
