Counting tight ends and running backs, Monmouth returned just 40 of their 126 receptions from last season. In the opening contest, Monmouth had three wide receivers grab their first-ever reception as senior BILL WORFOLK pulled in four passes for 44 yards, freshman TIM HILTWINE caught two passes for 26 yards and freshman MILES AUSTIN had a 41-yard TD reception for his only catch of the game. Last week vs. Sacred Heart, CHUCK GOOKINS got into the act hauling in his first career reception en route to 2 receptions for 11 yards on the day. BLOCK & TACKLE After ending the 2001 season ranked fifth on Monmouth’s career tackle chart with 235 takedowns, senior co-captain MIKE DIBELLA was expected to challenge Aaron Edwards (353) for the top spot on the list in 2002. All of that changed during spring practice when the Hawks’ coaching staff decided to put DiBella’s aggressive style of play in the offensive backfield. He entered the 2002 season listed as the starting fullback. In his first game at fullback, DiBella rushed for two yards on four carries and caught one pass for four yards. He also had one fumble in the contest. Last week vs. Sacred Heart, he rushed once for three yards and caught two passes for 19 yards. A ROUTINE PLAY? In the last two seasons, Monmouth has experienced a letdown immediately after scoring a touchdown. Immediately, as in the very next play. In the last two seasons the Hawks are just 25-of-36 on all points-after-touchdown attempts. Against Lafayette in the season opener, RYAN PETERSON had his second PAT attempt blocked. To make up for the missing point, the Hawks went for two-points following their next touchdown and MIKE DIBELLA was halted short of the goal line on a rush attempt. Following MU’s fourth touchdown, Peterson needed a ricochet off the uprights to get the extra point.

In 2001, the Hawks were able to convert on just 22-of-31 on all points-after-touchdown attempts. Monmouth made 22-of-29 PAT kicks on the season and were 0-of-2 on its two-point conversion attempts. Starting placekicker Ryan Peterson made just 22 of his 28 PAT attempts and backup STEVE ANDRIOLA missed his only attempt of the season. UP NEXT... Next week, Monmouth hits the road for its longest trek of the season as the Hawks battle Robert Morris University in a 1:30 p.m. contest on Saturday, September 28. THE LAST TIME...
