Rust was first released at the beginning of access in December 2013 and received its full release in February 2018. Rust is available on Microsoft Windows and macOS. To survive in the world, the player must collect resources and use them to make tools, weapons and other equipment. To create items, the player must have enough of all the necessary materials, with advanced items in need of more obscure components scattered around the map. There are limits to the number of craft items, with drawings allowing you to create more advanced items. An important element in Rust is the troopers. These are parachute-equipped pallets with supplies delivered by the prop aircraft. They can be seen at very long distances, sometimes causing players to run to the air drop. There are other organizations that are flowing down advanced mining, including the attack helicopter and the CH-47 Chinook. Both of them travel randomly on the map and try to kill the players. Chinook additionally travels to a randomly selected monument found in the gaming world and falls blocked by a power drawer that opens after a while, inviting PvP interactions. In Rust there are cars that work on players. Boats are used to bypass long distances through water and achieve valuable mining. Some aircraft, such as balloons, can also be used to quickly study the map. Spawning by accident, they can be used after refueling. These player-guided vehicles, and unlike offensive AI actors, can be destroyed by surface-to-air missiles that players can position outside bases. The player must remain well-fed, otherwise he will starve to death. There are other problems that the player must overcome gameplay time such as drowning, hypothermia and wildlife attacks, primarily bears and wolves. Specific loins around the map are radioactive. There are four four radiation: minor, low, medium and high. To enter these areas, you must wear the right armor or clothing; failure to do so can lead to death. In February 2014, the developers removed the zombies, a temporary enemy, from Rust, replacing them with red mutant bears and wolves. Early on, the developers made the choice not to try to populate the world with interesting locations to explore, but rather to provide an opportunity to create them. Newman described it as we give them the tools they make peace. One of the goals of the developers was to create a world that does not encourage any specific behavior on the part of the players. They considered introducing a system such as Day, where those who kill other players get unique outfits that identify them as gangsters, or perhaps a rating or color system. However, the developers eventually rejected these ideas, believing that they would detract from the player's freedom. Instead, they found, to their surprise, that the implementation of the voice chat had a noticeable impact on the player's behavior. With the ability to communicate, many players will no longer kill each other in plain sight for fear. At the end of 2014, the developers released the experimental Rust mode and portable it to the unreleased Game Engine Unity 5, improving the graphics and, in turn, the mechanics of the tener and the textural realism, and allowed larger procedurally generated worlds. The pilot regime included a new cheat control system called CheatPunch, which banned thousands of players for several days. In October 2014, the pilot mode became the default launch option. Shortly thereafter, in December, EasyAntiCheat, a third-party cheat control system, replaced CheatPunch. In early 2015, Rust added a feature that decided that each player's skin color was tied to their Steam ID. They were later altered and hidden statistics such as hypothermia were added. The monuments went through a phase when developers removed the radiation hazards because of the irritation it causes. Female models added to the game shortly thereafter were initially only available to server administrators for testing. After deployment, akin to skin color, players were automatically assigned a biological floor permanently associated with their Steam account. Later, in 2015, virtual goods stores selling weapons, clothing and other items were added to the game. When Valve introduced its Item Store, Rust was the first Steam game to use the feature. Similar products were also allowed to be sold in the Steam Community Market. In July 2016, developers removed the drawings, one of the main concepts of The Rust gameplay. They replaced them with an experience system where players could align after completing tasks such as collecting wood. In September, lead developer Maurino Berry mentioned in a Reddit post that there was a chance that the experience system would no longer exist in the future. Before saying this, Berry wrote in one of the devblogs system XP had huge praise until it was released and then many people hated it. In early November 2016, the components replaced the experience system. Initially, players had an initial list of items they could create. This was changed to a full list with the necessary components from the beginning. Radiation, removed in 2015, was reintroduced in November 2016 after it was reprogrammed from scratch. Instead of being in each place with the same level of radiation, the developers added different levels ranging from low, medium and high. In early 2017, Harry Newman said that if Steam Early Access did not exist, Rust would have been fully released as a game by then. The development team would continue to release updates. Reception In Early Access Rust received mixed reviews after its alpha release, many of which denoted the unfinished character and lack of Polish. PC Gamer's Andy Chalk said that Rust was a big use of Early Access, and although it's far from over, it's ready to play. Sean McInnis of GameSpot said the early 2014 version was rough around the edges and filled with bugs, but it entertained and had potential. Matthew Cox of Rock, Paper, Shotgun said it was smart that developers switched to the Unity engine at the end of 2014 because of the game's instability. In Cox's review, he noted many failures in the late 2014 version, including unresponsive animals, staffing problems and unstable servers. IGN's Mitch Dyer didn't enjoy the fight, calling Rust a half-broken game he couldn't recommend. Other games, such as The Forest, Just Survive, Ark: Survival Evolved and 7 Days to Die, were compared to Rust because of their aspects of survival in the open world, as well as crafting mechanics similar to Rust. Luke Plunkett of Kotaku noted the similarities, saying he thought someone was thinking about a game that could be played simultaneously by Dayz and Minecraft. Dyer, criticizing Rust for his mistakes, called parts of the experience completely unforgettable and often unpredictable. The inability to select and design a player's character has been praised and criticized. YouTube channel Extra Credits praised Rust for promoting diversity by randomly selecting a player in the race game. Linking race to their Steam ID has forced players to experience the game differently than they might normally experience, perhaps contributing to empathy for someone of other ethnicity. David Craddock of Shacknews criticized the lack of communication between Facepunch and the community when they added female models. In response to this criticism, Harry Newman noted that he felt some trepidation about adding a racial trait, fearing that it might be seen as the original character model blackened. He stressed that the chosen ethnicity is permanent - as in real you are who you are. Newman discussed the reasoning behind not the ability to choose the gender and race of your character in an article in The Guardian, telling Rust about survival rather than character and identity. We wanted the look of the players to be consistent over time. They must be recognizable consistently and long-term. Sales reportedly increased by 74% shortly after the addition of female models. Sales during the first two weeks of Rust's alpha release sold more than 150,000 copies, compared with 34,000 copies sold by Garry's Mod in the first week. Rust's sales reached a million copies after it was the earliest name of Access in just two months, and in February 2014 it overtook Garry's Mod in sales, making more than $30 million. By the end of 2015, three million copies had been sold. By March 2017, more than 5.2 million copies had been sold, with more than 1.2 million game skins sold. In December 2019, Facepunch announced that Rust had sold 9 million copies, worth $142 million, overtaking Garry's Mod in gross, albeit still lagging in total sales. The full release of ReceptionAggregate scoreAggregatorScoreMetacritic69/100 After the full release of Rust received mixed or medium reviews on the Metacritic review aggregator website. Critics praised pvP's fighting, difficulties and aspects of survival, while the grinding and experience that new players had was under some criticism. Many critics believe that, starting all over again, the fight was rewarding. For example, Luke Winky of PC Gamer summed up the game by saying, Wake up naked, run for your life, do terrible things to each other. There is no grander narrative, or myths, or a winning condition. He described the rookie experience as pretty prickly, but continued to praise the fight, joking that connecting the axe with the idiot's head feels great. Gloria Manderfeld, a writer for the German magazine GameStar, echoed these views, adding that apart from PvP there was little end to the game. However, she suggested that pvP itself was effective. Ray Porrec of Destructoid described the fight as a meat game. However, he wrote that the experience would vary depending on their desire to fight. If you can look past a community that is usually toxic, Rust's sprawling plains and toppled landmarks are an excellent backdrop for player-driven storytelling and smashed, dramatic moments. In a negative review, Alessandro Barbosa of GameSpot said the whole experience had not been realized. He described the game as lacking certain creative features, such as the ability to easily redesign the bases. Disdain for experience as a new player was noted in conjunction with the need for shredding, and how that has become. The IGN review described the game as expecting the player to spend all his playing time on it, fearing that failure to do so would lead to a swoop and the need to start over. Javi Gwaltney of Game Informer confirmed this by explaining it with demos when they died, only because they had met someone more experienced. Agreeing with Manderfeld's description, Cox said in an updated review that his patience runs out after a while. He said that while keeping the health bars out may have been enjoyable, he gave up the prospect in 2018. However, some critics praised the complexity of the game, mentioning the satisfaction they experienced after successful survival. Porreka recommended the game to those who are willing to devote time, saying that the game offers a social sandbox and a deep, functioning craft system. Winky expressed interest in the need to manage hunger, thirst and health by studying more and discovering the best subjects. He also expressed gratitude to those who dedicated the game, mentioning on YouTube videos of large multi-clan raids. He closed the review by saying that everyone should try Rust because of its difference from other games. Cox agreed that the brutality of the game only added to the player's enjoyment when he was successful. The reception to the schedule was ambiguous. Critics praised the environment but denounced the animation and character models. Barbosa described the animation as tough and unnatural and the models as ugly and boring.
