St. Peter Catholic Student Center Baylor Catholic Spring 2019 Serving the Catholic Community at Baylor University, McLennan Community College, & Texas State Technical College SEEK 2019: An Arena of Grace Thousands of students. Arms raised, clapping. Some students calling out. Some in silence. At times everyone singing. It sounds like a Baylor sporting event, but this past January, 17 thousand young people gathered in Indianapolis, not to support their school’s sports teams, but to worship, to listen, to confess, and transform their lives by attending SEEK. SEEK is a biennial conference hosted by the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS) in major cities across the United States. This year, 60 Baylor Catholic students joined thousands of other students, priests, consecrated persons, and speakers to learn what they truly yearn for: encountering Christ. A common thread in the talks was the speakers’ gratitude for and recognition of the sincere faith, witness, and commitment that flows from this Catholic community. During the five-day conference, our students attended talks by notable Catholic speakers like Sr. Mirian James (right), Leah Darrow, Jason Evert, and Sarah Swafford. Talks like these are the heart of all the FOCUS conferences and known for their inspiration, but also for having a strong call to action. “During Fr. Mike Schmitz’s talk on the last day, I heard how destructive indifference can be,” said Will Mullen (left), ‘20. “He talked about how if we truly believe in the Catholic faith then we are being selfish in not sharing its truth with those that we love. I needed this to give me the encouragement to share my faith more boldly with my friends.” Kate Ballantyne, ‘21, was particularly struck by a talk on prayer. -

The Morality of Magisterium 87 The Morality of Magisterium by Gerard Mannion Magisterium is a moral issue. To state such is not to re-emphasise that teaching authority can and should pertain to morality. Rather, that the relationship perceived from the other way around equally applies. An enormous amount of literature has already been written in relation to how magisterium relates to moral dilemmas as well as teachings and wider guidance for ethical discernment. But something which has been frequently overlooked in the history of the church and particularly so in recent times is that the way in which magisterium is understood and the manner in which it is exercised have moral implications themselves. Therefore, all due ethical consideration should be given to how magisterium is perceived and shaped long before it is exercised. One of the purposes of this paper is to try and remind ourselves of this and of the implications that follow from such a reminder. It also seeks to encourage moral theologians, ecclesiologists, canon law- yers and church leaders alike to keep this simple observation in mind. 1. Chapter 14 Discernment of Spirits It is indispensable for the direction of souls and for the study of extraordinary mystical phenomena to be able to distinguish the various spirits under which an individual may act or be acted upon. As used here, the word spirit refers to two different types of motivating factors or powers. The spirit of an individual refers to the internal inclination to good or evil, and it manifests itself with such regularity that it must be considered a personal trait. Thus, if a person has a propensity to prayer, he or she is said to possess the spirit of prayer; if there is a tendency to arguments and altercations, he or she is said to possess a spirit of contradiction, etc. Understood in this sense, the spirit of a person is usually the result of both temperament and character. But it is also possible for an individual to come under the influence of a spirit that is extrinsic to the personality, whether from God or the devil. For that reason it is the function of the discernment of spirits to judge whether a given act or repetition of acts flows from the spirit of God, the diabolical spirit, or the spirit of the individual. There are two types of discernment of spirit: acquired and infused. Acquired discernment of spirits is complementary to ordinary spiritual direction and can be cultivated by all who use the proper means. Infused discernment of spirits is a charismatic gift or gratia gratis data, which is granted by God to certain individuals. -

For false Christs and false prophets will arise and show great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.1 These verses from Matthew’s gospel draw attention to an aspect of religious belief characteristic of Judaism and Christianity: that for religions grounded in claims to revelation, discernment between true and false messiahs and prophets is a critical issue with eternal con- sequences. [Translated from Original Spanish] Thy Kingdom Come! PRESENTATION OF THE COMMUNIQUÉS OF THE GENERAL CHAPTER 1. From January 8th through February 25th, 2014, the Extraordinary General Chapter of the Legion of Christ took place in Rome. His Eminence, Cardinal Velasio De Paolis, CS, and his two counselors, Fr. Gianfranco Ghirlanda, SJ, and Fr. Agostino Montan, CSI, presided. Sixty- one chapter fathers participated, 19 ex officio and 42 elected by the nine territories of the congregation and the centers of Rome. 2. This Extraordinary General Chapter marks the end of the journey of in-depth revision that the congregation has travelled since the apostolic visitation, which took place during 2009- 2010, and the naming of a Pontifical Delegate in the summer of 2010. Our principal tasks in the Chapter, as Pope Benedict XVI1 indicated and as Pope Francis confirmed2, were to revise the Constitutions and to elect a new central government for the congregation. 3. In the first days, in light of the reports that the Pontifical Delegate and the pro-General Director submitted, we focused on analyzing the life of the Congregation since the ordinary General Chapter that took place in 2005. One of the outcomes of the intense exchange of ideas that took place in those days was the communiqué that the Chapter approved on January 20th, 2014, about the journey of renewal of the Congregation. This same day, the elections of the new central government took place. PEACETIMES Prince of Peace Stewardship Newsletter September 2020 Sacramental Celebrations Circumstances may have delayed springtime sacraments, but nothing stopped Prince of Peace 2nd graders from receiving their first communion on June 13th and 14th. In two separate, private Masses, 36 young parishioners partook, for the first time, of the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of our Savior through the holy Eucharist. Congratulations to each and every one of them! Traditionally, RCIA members are confirmed and receive the Eucharist for the first time during the Easter Vigil. However, the suspension of Masses left our church empty during Holy Week and postponed the welcoming of two new members into the Catholic Faith. John Icenogle and Lindsay Lund renewed their baptismal vows and received the sacraments of Confirmation and First Communion at the Saturday evening Mass on June 13th. Serving God and Others Prince of Peace Newsletter Page 2 A Vocation of Service to God and Others Dana Kennedy, daughter of parishioners, Jim and Lisa Kennedy, has spent the last 18 years serving God and His church, both in the United States and abroad. Born and raised in Kearney, Dana was baptized as an infant in the Lutheran Church. Jim and Lisa were very active in their church, volunteering in its youth ministry programs. When Dana was 10, her mom started having long, theological conversations with a Catholic coworker leading her to read and learn more about Catholicism. Lisa ultimately decided to convert. Dana recalls that despite the controversy and unrest her this caused within their church and extended family, she could see how happy the Catholic faith made her mother. -

FROM DESPAIR TO COMMUNION Discernment in the Writings of Luke Patrick J. Howell E HAD HOPED . .’ These are some of the saddest, most doleful ‘Wwords in all of Scripture. They occur as two disciples are walking along the road to Emmaus and encounter a stranger. They engage him in conversation, and he asks them why they are so sad. They are amazed that he seems to be the only one in the world who has not heard of the recent events in Jerusalem, about the judgment and crucifixion of Jesus. They voice their disillusionment: We had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. (Luke 24:21-23) This narrative, told and re-told in the Lukan community at Antioch and the rest of Syria in the five decades following the death of Jesus, describes the continuing journey of the community of disciples. It also speaks to our own contemporary disillusionment with the promises which ‘we had hoped’ would be fulfilled in our own time. Those of us who grew up in our faith during the Second Vatican Council believed that the Church was on the edge of a new era. ‘We had hoped’ not only that the energy, enthusiasm, renewal of faith released by the Council would ignite a new fire, but that we could sustain this dazzling light until it blazed to completion. -

Central Commission for the Review of the Statutes of Regnum Christi Theme for Study and Reflection Number 5 Charism and History of Regnum Christi Goal To prepare ourselves for the revision of the statutes of the Regnum Christi Movement for the first and second degrees, we need to take into account the charism of Regnum Christi, since the statutes should serve precisely to guard and promote that charism. We are seeking to understand what is the charism of a movement and how it is lived, so that then we can go on to remember the fundamental characteristics of our own, remembering the spiritual experience we share and its history, as well as the approval and other indications of the authority of the Church. Outline A. The charism of a spiritual family: Charisms are special graces that the Holy Spirit grants to faithful Christians for the good of the Church and of its mission in the world. By spiritual family, we mean a group of faithful Christians that, sharing a charism, are united by spiritual affinity and friendship in Christ. The charism of a spiritual family is collective and dynamic and generates a spiritual heritage. We pay special attention to the case of the founder of Regnum Christi. B. What spiritual experience helps us to form Regnum Christi? The discovery of the personal love of Christ, who calls us to share his mission, generates in us the desire to respond to him by doing our best to be authentic Christians and to make an active effort to introduce people to him so they will be transformed into his disciples. -

DEVELOPING SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT Beware Of “Christian” Mysticism 10/21/07 PM Many “Christian” writers are turning to mysticism. Donald Miller: You cannot be a Christian without being a mystic. (Blue Like Jazz p. 202) Richard Foster: We are to live in a perpetual, inward, listening silence so that God is the source of our words and actions. (Celebration of Discipline p. 16) The mystic believes that he or she can enjoy an unmediated link to God through a superrational experience. John MacArthur writes: The mystic disdains rational understanding and seeks truth instead through the feelings, the imagination, personal visions, inner voices, private illumination, or other purely subjective means. They believe that their thoughts and mental impressions can be explained as the inner voice of God. 1. Beware Of A Mystical View Of Faith. Some are teaching that faith is not rational. “It cannot be explained—It is something you feel.” But God says: Isaiah 1:18a "Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD . Matthew 22:37 And He said to him, "'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.' 2. Beware Of A Mystical Spirituality. We are to live in a perpetual, inward silence so that God is the source of our words and actions. (Celebration of Discipline p. 166) And I love this about Christian spirituality. It cannot be explained, and yet it is beautiful and true. It is something you feel, and it comes from the soul. (Blue Like Jazz p. 57) For me, the beginning of sharing my faith with people began by throwing out Christianity and embracing Christian spirituality, a nonpolitical mysterious system that can be experienced but not explained.
