FROM THE EDITOR Last call to mind that bucket list before the summer ends. And man, have we got a lot of stuff ticked off on ours in this issue. First, get (Break The Mold, p.24) to do the cover. It’s been a long-standing FHM tradition to go through an extended courtship period in our pursuit of cover stars. At times it took years. Kris is no exception—she’s been in the industry for a decade now and maybe we’ve wooed her for half of that. We waited, because experience has taught us not to force these things, and because we know that when she does say yes, by then she’d have really wanted it, and her FHM cover would most likely be one of the most exciting times of her career. It turned out exactly that way. We’re happy that you’re happy with the result, Kris, and I really liked how you described yourself at the end of your interview. Ku Romillo is an angel who paints the Devil with seaR i ng conviction Impulsive actions

“It was more of an impulse.” Young visual artist Ku Romillo is talking about the forces at work in a piece she calls, “Evil Be To Him What Evil Thinks” and by extension, her oeuvre, which she describes as “symbolist” in theme. And how did we become snooty art connoisseurs all of a sudden? It’s just that “Evil”, a painting of a well-endowed baphomet (the goat often associated with Satanism) floating above what seems to be an orgy, suddenly became viral on Facebook with over 30k shares as we write this. That Ku doesn’t look evil herself piqued our interest. C THE SUBCOMPACT

Perhaps the biggest change in the market has come in the form of the smallest cars available. After a trend of larger and more feature- packed cars in the early ‘00s, manufacturers went the other direction and gave us basic subcompacts that are cheap, frugal, and easy to maintain. There’s a reason these brightly colored models have become ubiquitous: they’re smart choices for the daily driver.

Aside from being the first-choice for majority of first-time car buyers, a sedan is often the default mental image of “car” in people’s heads. Sedans belong to a spread of several size categories: from microcar to full-size, but in our market, the middle model is not actually the “mid-size” classification (since the biggest sedans are a rarity on the road) and is the compact car instead.

t’s a truth universally acknowledged that a man going out with a woman will be made to do things he’d rather not do, things like sitting through a night at the theater, or listening to the latest K-Pop act, these and lots of other things. If you think about it, we’re sure the ladies in our lives feel the Isame way about basketball, superhero comics, and action movies, but you rarely hear them complain to you about it, do you? To help you pay them back the favor, here is our handy guide to fake-liking some of the things your lady might be into (if there is no way you'd be convinced)... INSTAGRAM What this is: A social media app that lets users edit and post photos. Also known as IG. How to fake-like it: Open your own IG account and follow your girl’s account. Like every post she shares. Be patient when she’s taking a photo for IG. Take selfies with her and post it on your own IG account; don’t forget to tag her. Why you should bother: IG is your girl’s way of documenting the most important things in her life. If you want to continue being a part of it, making yourself available in IG is essential. Degree of difficulty: Easy-peasy.

ROM-COM MOVIES What these are: Romantic comedy movies, Korean makeup local (My Kontrabida Girl, One More Chance) and foreign (Sleepless in Seattle, Serendipity). How to fake-like it: When your girl tells you she wants to watch a rom-com, do not suggest you watch the latest Liam Neeson or Keanu Reeves action flick. Look up classic rom-coms cosmetic stores that your girl might not have seen or even heard of, and offer to watch it with her. Keep your mouth shut during the movies. Why you should bother: If she’s willing to sit through The Raid: Redemption with you, you should be able to sit through Love Actually with What these are: The Face Shop, Nature Republic, her (shudders). It’s just fair. Banila Co., etc. Degree of difficulty: Depending on the movie, intermediate to difficult. How to fake-like it: When you’re at the mall and your girl wants to check out a store’s latest product, tell her to take her time. Ask her what she bought and make a note of it. On any special occasion, get her any of the products that she uses (except for face masks, because they are cheap and tacky as hell). Why you should bother: You want your girl to look as pretty as the day you met her, right? While that’s unrealistic, letting her indulge in beauty products benefits both of you in the long run. Degree of difficulty: Unless your girl wants you to try the beauty products yourself, super easy. What these are: Korean television dramas like Descendants of the Sun, Coffee Prince, etc. How to fake-like it: Shut your mouth when your girl is watching her K-Dramas. If she wants to talk to you about footnotes regarding the latest development in the story, listen to her. Eventually, you will have to watch an episode or two with her, possibly the entire season. Be brave. Why you should bother: It’s not a fad that’s going to fade away soon; it’s here to stay. So if you intend to marry your girl someday, know that you’ll be dealing with this the rest of your married lives. Degree of difficulty: Difficult, especially if you hate subtitles.

FRIENDS AND OTHER FRIENDS-LIKE SHOWS What these are: Friends (obviously), How I Met Your Mother, Happy Endings, etc. How to fake-like it: Friends and other similar shows like it are essentially romantic comedies that last way, way, way longer than movies. We suggest just telling your girl that it’s really something you can’t get into. But if you want to fake-like ten seasons of watching David Schwimmer making out with Jennifer Aniston, go ahead and sit through it. Why you should bother: Because Friends is actually helping you out. It’s telling your girl that she should look beyond a person’s looks B O y BANDS/SOLO MALE and to love them for their personality. You don’t have to be a Brad Pitt to get MUSIC ACTS a Jennifer Aniston, you can just be a David Schwimmer and do fine. How to fake-like it: Prepare your ear-holes. Listen to some of the songs (at least the If you’re the Brad Pitt-type, this first album or the greatest hits compilation). You look great, how are you doing? I’m great, thanks for asking! Currently, I live in Auckland, New Zealand with my son, Xander, my husband, and my husband’s colleague. I’m busy being a homemaker, cleaning the house, helping my son with his homework, helping him develop the love for reading, math and science. Aside from that, I hit the gym four to six times a week doing Crossfit and a few other things to keep me limber. My goal is to lift heavier weights and also be stretchable enough that the circus would recruit me! Definitely send us a video of your debut circus performance please! I always post on my Facebook and Instagram so watch for it, ha ha! Have you actually been sneaking visits here behind our backs all this time? HERNANDEZ Philippines, LIFE ON THE UPSWING [email protected] his plans hit a snag. W“I thought I’d build myself a camper that I could drive around,” he says. “But that didn’t make sense because we’re an island nation. The camper would have limited routes. So I thought, ‘Why not a boat?’ But a power boat costs more than a car.” A sailboat would have cost a bit It’s a win-win: you save less, except that he didn’t know how to sail. Espiritu's perfectly simple money and learn a badass solution? “I built a boat so I could craft at the same time learn to sail on it.” McGyver-ing the heck out of sailing effectively trumps the myth that owning a boat and sailing it is a Words CECILE JUSI-BALTASAR | Photography PAUL MONDOK rich man’s hobby. If done right, the boat you build will cost about as much as a high-end smart phone. How? Two words: The Internet. Espiritu found his kindred spirits in an online chat room (this was around 2005, after all) whose members were sailing and boating enthusiasts in the Philippines like himself. Members of the group— officially called the Philippine Home Boatbuilders Yacht Club (PHBYC)— pointed Espiritu to boat designs available online that he could use. “It’s easier now [to learn how to make things from the Internet] because of YouTube,” says Espiritu. “But back then, I had to rely on plans [that just had] a list of materials needed, and the procedure; some would have pictures of the steps.” The first plan he bought for $47 was for an 11-foot nesting dinghy called a Spindrift. Materials cost P25,000—less than the price of a smart phone back then. (factoring in inflation, the boat’s cost today would still be comparable to that of a high- end smart phone.) “The design was for a boat that cut in half; the front part fit the back part. The whole thing could fit into the cab of an L300,” says Espiritu. His finished boat weighed 150 pounds; one person could carry half the boat. “And then I taught myself to sail,” Espiritu says. Since then, he’s built two more boats for himself and for about 50 more clients.

The Oz Goose—designed by an Australian now based in Batangas—is one of the most stable boats there are. Its usual size is 12 feet, and can fit two adults and three kids; a perfect family boat. Espiritu has built one for himself. “It actually doesn’t look like a boat at all because it’s flat on all sides,” says Espiritu. “The Oz Goose changes the concept of what a boat should look like.” Boats are usually V-shaped underneath; the Oz Goose is flat. Boats usually have a pointy nose; the Oz Goose’s bow is flat and doesn’t touch the water. Because of its unusual shape, though, the Oz Goose is very stable. “It’s a box that sails really well,” says Espiritu. “The Oz Goose is an ideal learning platform for beginners.”

76 FHM MAY 2017 facebook.com/FHM.ph • twitter.com/fhmphil • fhmphilofficial www.fhm.com.ph Espiritu spent three months in his garage to finish his first boat, the Ceol Beag (pronounced “kyol bek”) which means “light music” in Scottish Gaelic. Later that year, Espiritu and Ceol Beag would win first place in their first boat race: the Round DIY-Ing It Taal Volcano Regatta 2006. These steps have been simplified for this feature; if you want a complete procedure, introduce yourself to the PHBYC on Facebook. 1 Gather your materials. “The easiest way to build your own boat is to use wood that is easy to shape, structurally strong, and naturally buoyant. For this one, Espiritu turned to the wife of one of the forum’s club members for help. She had a sewing machine. “Think of the sail as a wing,” says Espiritu. “It’s not flat; the wing shape creates the lift that enables [the boat] to go upwind.” His sail was made of polytarp, or more commonly known as trapal. “Hindi talaga nalulusutan ng hangin yun,” Espiritu says. “Pero hindi rin tumatagal sa init ng araw.”
