ARDEN ENTERPRISES FONTAINE IN FILLY FORM WORLD-WIDE TALENT TIE Nashville—A giant talent tie-up which will encompass all phases of the entertainment business including TV spectaculars throughout the world has been consummated in a deal between Don Arden Enterprises Ltd. of London, England, and Dub Albritten's, One Niters Inc., of Nashville, to be known as Anglo-American Artists. The fusion of the talent rosters by the two corporate groups was seen as a natural develop• ment widi the growing importance of English and continental artists in the United States and the equally growing importance of American artists abroad. Each firm, while keeping its separate corporate identity, will represent the other's talent in its own country and in those other areas of the world where it holds lucrative talent and booking contacts. Also in the plans are twelve TV spectaculars already committed to be produced in London, Madrid and Berlin for using American artists. First will be that of Brenda Lee and The Casuals in London in late September. Arden and AUbritten will make a concentrated further effort to promote American country artists in Europe. According to X. Cosse, One Niters Inc., general manager, is currently producing entertain• ment packages and this month will send 17 packages into waiting markets. Among these is the Jerry Lee Lewis show which goes to England and the continent; The Red Foley Show; Pete Fountain, The Smothers Brothrs, The Kingston Trio and various cocktail units for whom dates have already been set. Meanwhile, One Niters Inc. which moved into its expanded new office quarters only eight months ago is being forced to move again. The firm has taken over the entire penthouse of the ultra modern 1808 West End Building in Nashville with its panoramic view of Music City, and workmen and decorators are busy making it ready for occupancy by March 15. Discography of the Camay Label [1963] The Camay label was started by Don Ames and Hal Weiss in 1961. The label was based in New York City in the Brill Building at 1721 Broadway. Camay issued singles in 1961, 1962 and 1963 and seemed to disappear prior to 1964. In 1963, the label focused on issuing budget albums. I believe the entire LP output was issued that year, most if not all of the material was leased from other labels and not recorded directly by Camay. In spite of being a budget label, they did produce a few good albums. The first release was a compilation of country music that included two rare sides by Bill Haley. Perhaps the best album on the label was “12 Collectors Goodies” CA 3012, with great pictures of vintage sports cars on the cover. This record contains some of the finest doo-wop put to vinyl and some very rare songs, Lynn McCutcheon in his book “Collecting Doo-Wop Compilations” calls this one of the 25 best doo-wop compilations ever produced. “12 Million Record Sellers” CA 3010 is also an excellent compilation, although it contains more commonly available material. The first Camay label was red with black printing. “CAMAY” above the center hole. The second Camay label was silver with black printing. “camay” on a record overlapping a globe above the center hole. • Message from TLC President John Sloan (‘98) [email protected]
Message from TLC President John Sloan (‘98) [email protected] Lonely One of my favorite things to do as a kid was to get to go visit my uncle, Larry Don Gilbert. Uncle Larry lived in the east Texas town of Kilgore, Texas, which was about 18 miles from Henderson, where I grew up. He was around ten years my senior, and he was my idol. Looking back, I appreciate how incredibly tolerant he was to let a little kid like me hang out with him and his friends. Uncle Larry was everything a kid growing up in Texas in the 60s aspired to be: he was an incredible all-round athlete, he had pretty girlfriends and, with both parents working from can to can’t every day, he had an absurd amount of freedom. One of my favorite stories about Uncle Larry was when he and three of his buddies were joyriding in the family station wagon. It was a 1960 model red Ford. They were all twelve years old. Uncle Larry was driving, though obviously he did not have a driver’s license or have per- mission to take the car out. While tooling down one of the main streets in Kilgore, they met a police car traveling in the opposite direction. Instead of acting nonchalant and driving by, they all ducked down until they drove past. Luckily the police officer was not looking at the seemingly-unoccupied car driving by and they got away. While Uncle Larry and I never got into any serious trouble, I became much wiser to the ways of the world.

  • “It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels”-- Kitty Wells (1952)
“It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels”-- Kitty Wells (1952) Added to the National Registry: 2007 Essay by John Rumble (guest post)* Kitty Wells When Kitty Wells first recorded for Decca Records in 1952, she had toured for years with her husband, Johnnie (later Johnny) Wright, and his partner, Jack Anglin. But the mother of three was tired of the road, and earlier sessions for RCA had yielded no hits. This time, her main concern was the session fee she would earn. Wells had moved back to Nashville, her hometown, with Johnnie & Jack on the strength of that duo’s 1951 hit “Poison Love,” their entrée to the Grand Ole Opry cast. Now, with Johnnie’s prospects looking up, she pondered leaving full-time entertaining altogether. As it turned out, Wells’s “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels,” her first Decca release, quickly scaled “Billboard” magazine’s country charts. The hit made Wells a major star, and an Opry member in her own right. To be sure, country music had boasted successful female artists since the 1920s. The Carter Family’s Sara and Maybelle Carter, cowgirl singer Patsy Montana, and Opry comedienne Minnie Pearl had already won national fame. But Wells was the first to reach #1 in the decade after World War II, when country entered its takeoff phase. In these years, American women faced enormous pressures to leave their wartime jobs, renounce political concerns, and return to keeping house and raising children. Popular magazines, psychologists, and men (whose jobs women had filled) all told them so.
