The Single Species Action Plan for the Conservation of the Madagascar Pond Heron Ardeola idae was initiated jointly by CMS and AEWA in 2007 upon a recommendation of the 14 th Meeting of the CMS Scientific Council. 2. The plan covers the entire range of this intra-African migrant. The drafting of the Plan was commissioned to the BirdLife International Africa Partnership Secretariat with financial support provided by the Ministry of Environment of Italy and was compiled by a team under the management of Paul Kariuki Ndang’ang’a. Earlier drafts of the Plan have been consulted extensively with experts and governmental officials at the Range States. 3. The Plan has already been adopted by the 4 th Meeting of the Parties to AEWA (Antananarivo, Madagascar, 15-19 September 2008). Action requested: The Scientific Council is requested to: a. review and endorse the Plan; and b. transmit the Plan to the Conference of the Parties for adoption. For reasons of economy, documents are printed in a limited number, and will not be distributed at the meeting. Delegates are kindly requested to bring their copy to the meeting and not to request additional copies. We discovered our flight to Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Airlines was delayed due to the late arrival of the incoming aircraft but finally we were airborne on the overnight flight. Day 2 Sunday 22nd September Addis Ababa to Antananarivo As we began our descent, it was clear we’d have a very tight transfer to make our onward flight connection, as would most of the other passengers on the flight. Ethiopian Airlines rose to the challenge however, and when we landed directed us to a fleet of buses, each duly depositing passengers at the right aircraft, without even going into the terminal. Once on board we met Luis, the last member of our group who had flown from Zurch, and were swiftly on our way. We arrived on time at Antananarivo Airport, where immigration formalities were slightly better organised than on previous visits. -

MADAGASCAR: The Wonders of the “8th Continent” A Tropical Birding Custom Trip October 20—November 6, 2016 Guide: Ken Behrens All photos taken during this trip by Ken Behrens Annotated bird list by Jerry Connolly TOUR SUMMARY Madagascar has long been a core destination for Tropical Birding, and with the opening of a satellite office in the country several years ago, we further solidified our expertise in the “Eighth Continent.” This custom trip followed an itinerary similar to that of our main set-departure tour. Although this trip had a definite bird bias, it was really a general natural history tour. We took our time in observing and photographing whatever we could find, from lemurs to chameleons to bizarre invertebrates. Madagascar is rich in wonderful birds, and we enjoyed these to the fullest. But its mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and insects are just as wondrous and accessible, and a trip that ignored them would be sorely missing out. We also took time to enjoy the cultural riches of Madagascar, the small villages full of smiling children, the zebu carts which seem straight out of the Middle Ages, and the ingeniously engineered rice paddies. If you want to come to Madagascar and see it all… come with Tropical Birding! Madagascar is well known to pose some logistical challenges, especially in the form of the national airline Air Madagascar, but we enjoyed perfectly smooth sailing on this tour. We stayed in the most comfortable hotels available at each stop on the itinerary, including some that have just recently opened, and savored some remarkably good food, which many people rank as the best Madagascar Custom Tour October 20-November 6, 2016 they have ever had on any birding tour. -

Madagascar Highlights II 17th October to 31st October 2021 (15 days) Scaly Ground Roller by Jonathan Rossouw Madagascar is often referred to as the ‘Eighth Continent’ and its exceptional fauna and flora have evolved over millions of years of isolation. This legendary uniqueness is nowhere better reflected than in its birds, and the island hosts no less than five endemic families (the ground rollers, cuckoo roller, mesites, Malagasy warblers and vangas)! 1.A. Detailed description of the research area and research plan Context of the proposal Biological invasions (bioinvasions) are defined as the successful establishment and spread of species outside their native range. They act as a major driver of global changes in species distribution. Diverse organisms and ecosystems may be involved, and although not all invasions have a negative impact, the ecological consequences often include the loss of native biological diversity and changes in community structure and ecosystem activity. There may also be additional negative effects on agriculture, forests, fisheries, and human health. National governments, intergovernmental structures like the European Commission and international organizations such as EPPO, CABI and IUCN have therefore mobilized to (i) introduce international laws on invasive species, (ii) organize international networks of scientists and stakeholders to study bioinvasions, and (iii) formalize the cooperation between national environmental or agricultural protection agencies (e.g. the French Agence Nationale de Sécurité Sanitaire, ANSES). Several billion euros are spent annually to address the problems caused by bioinvasions and the scientific community has focused on predicting and controlling future invasions by understanding how they occur. A peer-reviewed journal entitled "Biological Invasions” has been published since 1999. Ecologists have long drawn attention to the negative ecological effects of invasive species, whereas the evolutionary aspects of bioinvasions have received comparatively little attention. This reflects the fact that: i) invasive populations were thought to experience significant bottlenecks during their introduction to new environments and thus possess a limited potential to evolve; and ii) evolution was considered too slow to play a significant role given the relatively short timescale of the invasion process. -

An 11 hrs flight took us to Antananarivo, where we landed just before Participants midnight. Once through after visa and passport control we met Zina at the airport. We stayed at IC Tomas Carlberg (Tour leader), Jonas Nordin, Hotel and fell asleep at 01:30. Sweden; Rolf Nordin, Sweden; Olof Persson, Sweden; Jesper Hornskov, Denmark; Eric November 2nd Schaumburg, Denmark; Hans Harrestrup Andersen, Woke up at 6, met the Danes (JH, ES, HW, and Denmark; Hans Wulffsberg, Denmark; Ian Fryer, UK HHA), and had breakfast. RANDRIAMAHAZO1,2 AND AKIRA MORI1* Department of Zoology, Graduate School of Science, Kyoto University, Sakyo, Kyoto 606- 8502, JAPAN 2 Present address: WCS Madagascar , BP 8500, Antananarivo 101, MADAGASCAR Abstract: Thermal characteristics of an Iguanian lizard, Oplurus cuvieri cuvieri, were examined in a tropical dry forest of northwestern Madagascar. This lizard is an arboreal, strictly diurnal sit-and-wait predator feeding mostly on insects. A field study was conducted from mid-September 1997 to mid- January 1998 and from late-September to mid-November 1998. Ambient air temperature significantly affected body temperature, but sex, snout-vent length, month, perching height, and posture of perching lizards did not show significant effects on body temperature. Effects of time and interaction between ambient temperature and time were significant in the first half of 1997 (dry season) and 1998, but not in the latter half of 1997. Overall body temperature was significantly correlated with ambient temperature, and slopes between them did not significantly deviate from one. However, slopes varied with time of day, and significant correlation between ambient and body temper- atures diminished in the midday period. Body temperature was significantly higher than corresponding ambient temperature. In the rainy season, when ambient temperature decreases, the lizards seemed to regulate its body temper- ature to some extent by selecting hotter microhabitat (the ground). INTRODUCTION In the mid-18th century, French scientific writers published extensive natural history encyclo- paedias of world fauna based for the first time on actual specimens and travel literature instead of being largely or partly informed by myth and legend (Newton & Gadow 1896, Farber 1982).
