Marty Robbins. Opnieuw The Shirelles. 2:15 4 It's Love That Really Counts (Bacharach/David) Scepter SHIRELLES 16 It's Love That Really Counts, een B-kantje van The Shirelles op Scepter in 1962. In The Land Of Make Believe. This Empty Place was haar opvolger van Don't Make Me Over en net zo goed origineel. Tommy Hunt kreeg daar als eerste I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself. 2:49 9 I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself Scepter TOMMY HUNT I/23 2:59 10 Anyone Who Had A Heart (Bacharach/David) Scepter DIONNE WARWICK II/8 Scepterzwaaiers Tommy Hunt & Dionne Warwick, met twee Bacharach/David-nummers die we net zo goed van Dusty Springfield kennen of van Cilla Black: I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself en Anyone Who Had A Heart. Waar waren we gebleven? 2:24 15 My Little Red Book (Bacharach/David) UA MANFRED MANN L130b 5 My Little Red Book van Manfred Mann uit de soundtrack van sixties-film What's New Pussycat en achteraf zowaar een rock klassieker via versies van The Standells, The Seeds, Love, The Fuzztones, The Rumour, ja zelfs The White Stripes en Golden Earring. Stuff genoeg. 2:31 16 Too Late To Worry (Bacharach/David) Kapp BABS TINO L130b 2 Too Late To Worry van Babs Tino voor Kapp in 1962; werd Donne moi ma chance bij Richard Anthony in Frankrijk en Geef Mij Nog Eén Kans bij Marva in Vlaanderen. Eentje om het af te leren (om er dan volgende week opnieuw een heel uur tegenaan te gaan): The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, met een neuslengte origineel van The Fairmount Singers (en niet van Gene Pitney!) en zo eindigt deze eerste originHal David-aflevering... EINDAFK. 2:44 17 Man Who Shot Liberty Valence (Bacharach/David) Dot FAIRMOUNT SINGERS L88 19 18 Body And Soul (Green) CARROLL GIBBONS .

  • Scepter Records Discography
Scepter Records 1958-1961 The Scepter Records story does not really start with Tiara Records. Lew Conetta created Tiara several years before Scepter, and Tiara continued to release records after Scepter began. However, one person working for Tiara – and by all accounts a co-owner of the company – is the well-known instrument for bringing about the vision for Scepter Records. That was Florence Greenberg. By early 1958, Greenberg was 44 years old – she would turn 45 in September. Over the past two years, she had learned as much about music publishing and about the managing of a record company as she could. She had approached the revived Tiara with a song for which her son, Stan, had co-written the music. Murry Shaff recorded the song, and Tiara had released it – with little success. After that, she had set up her own publishing company, Scepter Music, in late 1957, to publish the Shirelles’ first song, “I Met Him on a Sunday.” Throughout 1958, Scepter Music continued to publish Shirelles’ songs (when they were on Decca) as well as songs that John Bowden wrote for the Vestelles (also on Decca), plus some songs for which Tiara released the records. In November 1958, Greenberg parted ways with Tiara Records for a new venture. As Lew Conetta had plans for Tiara, and since Greenberg had enough confidence in the Shirelles to put them out on her own after their contract with Decca expired, on December 1, 1958, Florence Greenberg and Terry Ryan announced the formation of Scepter Records. Ryan was an artists and repertoire person; he would occupy the role that Hy Grill had fulfilled at Tiara, helping to recruit new artists to the label.

  • The Rise of the “Girl Groups”
THE RISE OF THE “GIRL GROUPS” OVERVIEW ESSENTIAL QUESTION Were the Girl Groups of the early 1960s voices of female empowerment or reflections of traditional female roles? OVERVIEW Tucked between the popularity of the early Rock and Rollers and the mid-1960s British Invasion was the phenomenon known as the “Girl Groups.” With names like the Bobbettes, the Shangri-Las, the Ronettes and the Chantelles, they offered a style rich in vocal harmonies that was eagerly embraced by a wide audience. A number of Girl Group hit songs were co-written by female songwriters, including Carole King, Ellie Greenwich, Cynthia Weil, and Florence Greenberg (who also launched her own record label and whose life served as the basis for the 2011 Broadway musical Baby It’s You). If, up to that point, male voices and male songwriters dominated the popular music scene, things were changing. Rock and Roll had a new female sound that produced a string of hits. The Girl Groups rarely if ever performed material they had written themselves and rarely if ever played the instruments featured on their recordings, a job left to male studio musicians. Lyrically, most of their songs -- from the Dixie Cups’ “Chapel of Love” to the Angels’ “My Boyfriend’s Back” -- focused on the males in their lives and the promise of a satisfying relationship with that perfect guy. But there was nonetheless something new at work: a female voice was emerging despite it all. In this lesson, students will evaluate what the emergence of the Girl Groups says about the roles of girls and women in the early 1960s, as the nation sat on the threshold of a new Women’s Rights movement that would challenge traditional female roles.

1 PLAYLIST JAN. 22, 2017 The Beatles by the Fireside 9AM The Beatles - Mother Nature’s Son - The Beatles (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul Another Paul McCartney solo performance for the “White Album.” Paul remembers writing the song at his father’s home in Liverpool and that it was inspired by Nat “King” Cole’s recording of “Nature Boy.” After the other Beatles went home on the evening of August 9, 1968, Paul went through 25 live performances of the song, each featuring his vocal and his Martin D-28 acoustic guitar. Take 24 was deemed the best. Overdubbing 2 took place on August 20 with Paul playing drums and timpani, double-tracking his lead vocal at the end of the song, and adding a second acoustic guitar part. George Martin’s brass arrangement was also added to the mix. The Beatles - Yes It Is - Single (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocals: John, Paul and George Recorded over five hours on February 16, 1965, the rhythm track of “Yes It Is” was completed in 14 takes. John, Paul and George then spent three hours recording the vocals live, the best version being laid on top of Take 14 as an overdub. Starting in 1965 this was the new way they would record. Previously, every edit piece or overdub would have been numbered. Now they just recorded until they got it right and placed that on top of a numbered take, the ”best” rhythm track. Written primarily by John Lennon. John: “That's me trying a rewrite of ‘This Boy,’ but it didn't work.” “Yes It Is” is notable for its lush harmonies and George Harrison’s 12-string Rickenbacker played through a foot-controlled volume pedal, what is now known as a “wah-wah pedal.” The B-side of the “Ticket To Ride” single, issued April 9, 1965 in the UK and April 19, 1965 in the U.S.
