would be a good idea. “Ok,” I said, “I’ll get my keys.” I get the door moved, the drywall hung, and now the spackling can start. “Hey, I thought I had drywall mud here” was my next statement. I didn’t, but, the home improvement store does. Guess where I went? After the drywall is spackled and smooth, it’s the evening before I leave for my trip. This is when Paula reminds me how nice it would be if she had water in the kitchen before I left—oh yeah, I know what that means. It means that simply putting a bucket of water in the middle of the kitchen would be a bad move. So I proceeded to temporarily install a couple cabinets so I could install the sink. Crap, the water shut-off valves need to be replaced—where’d I put my truck keys? When I get home and fix the shut offs, I feel it’s time to install the new countertop. Well guess what, the color doesn’t look right—back to the store we go! I got the water turned on at o-dark-thirty the night before I had to leave, but I made it. When I return from my trip, I remove the temporarily installed cabinets and sink and get ready to paint the walls—here’s an experience I won’t soon forget. FIRE TECH: THAT HEMI

Since the 440 D.U.I. will not fit a Wedge engine with Indy heads, we felt that maybe the Hemi D.U.I. would be tall enough to fit one. Good friend Vic Palombo graciously lent us his ’66 Charger with an Indy-headed RB, and our buddies at SLP welcomed the Charger for a flogging on their chassis dyno. This time the Hemi D.U.I. would be up against the MSD Pro Billet distributor with a more street-like MSD 6AL ignition box and MSD Blaster coil. For our baseline pull, the rwhp was 457 at 6,200 rpm, and the air/ fuel (A/F) mixture ratio was a good-looking 12.8 at WOT (wide open throttle). Timing was at 39 degrees total—right where this Indy-headed Wedge makes its most power. We made three more pulls to confirm there was consistent power production. At Vic’s home garage, all the MSD ignition components and wiring were removed. This really cleaned up the engine Baseline testing with the MSD ignition showed the Hemi was increasing power output on compartment (see pics). We used the each pull. We installed the taller and wider D.U.I. distributor with only the 16-volt dyno stock 12-volt wire that originally juiced the wire to run the Hemi D.U.I. The stand-alone D.U.I backed up the MSD’s numbers and power positive side of the coil to power the D.U.I. still increased on each pull as the Hemi continued breaking-in. The D.U.I. did well against distributor. The original ballast resistor was a team of racing ignition components. bypassed. With the Hemi D.U.I. dropped in place, the stroked Wedge fired right up. We immediately noticed that it was running smoother and with better throttle response. Now back at SLP, we made certain the timing was set at the same 39 degrees. With the Charger securely strapped down, the moment of truth came when SLP’s Hank Denieki (Chief Engineer) punched the pedal down. We were very pleased to learn we picked up 5 rwhp. With the A/F at the same 12.8 we didn’t need to reach into our boxes of Holley tuning supplies. Again, we made three more pulls to check consistency. As an added bonus to our testing of the Hemi D.U.I., we wanted to see if Performance Distributors’ Mini VIP (18-volt step-up regulator) would step up the power. The Mini VIP was plugged into the D.U.I. and another spin of the roller showed us 5 more horsepower to the wheels. That’s enough of a power increase to be worth a tenth at the track. The additional spark output changed the combustion burn to a lean and mean 13.0 A/F. This was on an exceptionally warm Here Dave Barton sets the D.U.I’s timing at the same 30-degrees for a fair comparison. and humid December day (72 degrees, 77 When you consider the mild build-nature of the Crate Hemi (.540-inch lift cam, 10.5:1 percent humidity). Hood clearance for the Hemi D.U.I. was checked using our ’67 Coronet, equipped with an RB Wedge. The hood closed, but as you can see, the pink play-dough shows how the top edge of the coil cover was up against the hood. On our ’67, the hood bracing didn’t come close to the distributor. We tried the Hemi DUI using a friend’s 440-powered ’64 Fury, and we couldn’t close the hood. The hood bracing was in the way.

Further competition for the Hemi D.U.I. would be your typical street type ignition. Vic Palumbo’s ’66 Charger features a Indy-headed 493-inch Wedge, and the ignition is an MSD Pro Billet distributor and a 6AL box and Blaster coil, with 8.5mm Super Conductor plug wires. We baseline tested the MSD ignition on SLP’s SuperFlow SF840 chassis dyno.

The coil cover on the left will become standard issue for the Hemi D.U.I. to aid in needed hood clearance. The cover on the right is featured on all the other D.U.I. distributors. The new cover will add nearly an inch of needed hood clearance for the tall distributor.

The fender well area gained a cleaner appearance without the MSD We checked hood clearance with the stock-type H.E.I. coil/cap cover ignition box, coil, and wiring. The DUI distributor made its presence and gained the needed clearance (see the pink play dough). The Hemi known—it’s big, tall and intimidating. We set the timing at the D.U.I. may have fit under the hood of our 67 R/T, but don’t expect it to same 39-degrees total, and the Wedge idled noticeably smoother fit under any Shaker, Air Grabber, or Ramcharger equipped hoods. and the throttle response felt better. Ditto for our road test.

The MP finned aluminum valve cover sits roughly a ½-inch higher on the raised port Indy head. In this situation the Hemi D.U.I. clears the MP valve cover by an 1/8-inch. Note: the 440 D.U.I. will not fit a RB engine with Indy heads. This was why we trial fitted the Hemi D.U.I. on this Indy headed RB motor.

On this ’66 Charger we can see the Hemi DUI sticking through the hole of the Hemi in the fiberglass AAR hood. The ’66-’67 Charger and Coronet use the same hood. In our case, it fit under the hood of our Coronet but not the Charger. Remember, the Hemi DUI will only fit under a limited number of Mopar hoods.

34 moparmusclemagazine.com performance for the new Hemi, the HO and the Stage II, but we decided their HO system would best suit the needs of our daily driver. The HO system offers intercooled performance, and utilizes ProCharger’s P-1SC-1 supercharger to make six pounds of boost for an approximate 100 rear-wheel horsepower gain. Other nice features of the HO kit are the simplicity of a shared serpentine belt drive, and the fact that other than swapping the injectors, no fuel system modifications are necessary. Once installed, the supercharger and related bracket and components look as if they could have been installed at the factory, and even the stock engine cover is retained though slightly modified. When the kit arrived at our shop, we unpacked it and found everything to be nicely protected in the shipping containers. We ran the baseline dyno test on our Challenger (which is modified with a Magnaflow cat-aft exhaust system and K & N cold air kit) the day before we planned to install the kit, making 309 horsepower and 333 lb/ft of torque at the rear wheels. Once Jeff Lacina and Shannon O’Connor from ProCharger arrived, we unpacked the parts and started the installation. Besides removing the car’s front fascia, which really isn’t that big a deal, the supercharger kit simply bolts on with basic hand tools. Since balancer/lower pulley on the new Hemi is only pressed into place on the crankshaft, with a bolt, but no keyway, ProCharger sends a pinning kit with the necessary drill bit, fixture, and pin to prevent the balancer from slipping on the crank. We found the kit to be well thought out and nicely engineered, and basically watched and took pictures as the ProCharger team had our system installed easily in about 8-10 man hours. Since we began the project in the afternoon, we had time to finish the installation the next morning, upload the new Diablosport tuning, then test drive and dyno the car in the afternoon. The ProCharger kit included everything we needed, and the car fired immediately after the work was complete, sounding crisp. Since our car is a daily driver, we chose the quiet gear drive option so that with the hood shut, there’s no indication of the power-adding air compressor hiding underneath. Taking the Challenger for a test drive, we immediately notice the improved throttle response and increased power, demonstrated by the ability to fry the tires at will with the traction control off. Otherwise, the Challenger was docile and drove just as it did before the installation, until the throttle is opened. Follow along as we show you how easy it is to install the ProCharger kit for impressive horsepower gains, then back up our gut-feeling of power with dragstrip and dyno testing. ◀ With the radiator 7drained and out of the way, there’s easy access to the crankshaft. the carburetor, or a “suck-through” system by which the Roots-stylet blower sucks air through top-mounted carbs. Either way, the carb or carbs need to be properly tuned for supercharging, with larger fuel metering jets and power enrichment systems. Additionally, the stock fuel system must be upgraded with a high-volume electric fuel pump at the very least to support the requirements of a supercharged engine. A good coil is also a must, and if boost is high, you may need to upgrade with aftermarket electronic ignition or even a magneto inn extreme cases. As with any installation that enhances engine performance, the rest of the car may need upgrades as well. Factory 9-inch drum brakes just don’t cut it with a powerful engine, and even a mildly supercharged 318 can destroy the 7¼-inch rear that came in you’re A-body. ▶Since the 2supercharger will pump more air through the engine, your fuel system needs to pump more fuel to ensure the proper air/fuel ratio. Older Mopars will need an upgraded fuel pump, like the Holley unit shown here. Modern cars may need a Flowcharger to boost fuel pump voltage.

▶In carbureted 3applications, the carburetor must be properly tuned for the extra air being forced through it. Holley makes four-barrel carbs specifically for blow-through supercharging, or tuning your existing carburetor is another alternative.

odge Chargers are hot commodities on today’s marketplace. While the ’68-’70 versions are probably the most popular overall, the Drestyling of 1971 was more than just skin deep. Options, graphics, and various add-ons made many of them unique cars individually. Those days, the big-inch R/T and Super Bee models offered Hemi and Six Pack power to the masses. Though one was upscale and the other a basic street stripper, they seem to get all of the attention now. Lost in the shuffle is the fact that the 383, though down on compression in some forms by 1971, was a nice option in the standard B-Body. Without adding the R/T trim or the Super Bee attitude, a buyer could build a complete package around the base Charger by selecting the N code High Performance, four-barrel engine. Moreover, the ordered car could be further sweetened by adding options galore. While the car you see here is slightly modified with a few non-optional trim pieces, it truly is a one-of- one Mopar. When we saw it in a row of very nice third-gen Chargers, what made it interesting was that it was a car that many of us would probably enjoy without the price tag that more visible Charger packages seem to require these days. I was out enjoying an evening drive outside of Fresno, California, and my cousin in his car joined me. We happened to line up at a deserted intersection, and decided to let it rip. I pulled the shifter down to low gear to get ready. I pulled hard through first gear, and then the linkage bound on me and it wouldn’t let me shift. Before I could react, the tach was buried and the engine was popping. I couldn’t believe what happened. The engine seemed to idle rough as it settled down. The occasional high-dollar feature car shows readers what’s possible, and hopefully gives them ideas of things they can do to their own car. However, contrary to what you might think, most of the feature cars we use are found at car shows, and before we even mention shooting a car to an owner, we do our best to find out the “story” behind it. Finding a car to feature is easy; there are so many great looking cars. But finding one that has a history with the owner and a story about the build of the car is the hard part. We don’t like to feature “check built” cars that will end up as focal cars at the SEMA show and then Barrett Jackson—although we have been duped occasionally. Like you said, it is about the average Joe. Finally, the Fast Facts section of each feature is basically just an overview section for someone to get some quick information about the car; it’s not meant to replace the feature. I have a ’33 Dodge coupe with a 360 engine and an 833 with a Pistol Grip. I’ve been interested in replacing my 360 with a 340 Six Pack and was excited to see your “Six Pack Flashback” article in the August issue; however, while you gave part numbers for many of the Mopar crate engine pieces, you failed to give a part number for the complete assembly.
