2019 ANNUAL REPORT ART TRANSFORMS ART TRANSFORMS

THIS IS AN INTERVENTION. A MESSAGE FROM THAT SPACE IN THE MARGIN THAT IS A SITE OF CREATIVITY AND POWER, THAT INCLUSIVE SPACE WHERE WE RECOVER OURSELVES, WHERE WE MOVE IN SOLIDARITY… A SITE OF RESISTANCE… SPACE OF OPENNESS… OF RADICAL POSSIBILITY…OFFERING PERSPECTIVES FROM WHICH TO SEE AND CREATE, TO IMAGINE ALTERNATIVE, NEW WORLDS… ENTER THAT SPACE. LET US MEET THERE. WE GREET YOU.

These are words from bell hooks written in a 1989 article in Framework: The Journal of Cinema and Media, Vol 36, called “Choosing the Margin as a Space of Radical Openness”, published by Wayne State University Press.

53 SKETCH WORKING ARTS SKETCH WORKING ARTS 54 ART TRANSFORMS CHAIR’S ART TRANSFORMS RE-SKETCHING A SUSTAINABLE MESSAGEFUTURE FOR SKETCH 2019 was a remarkable year for SKETCH with many firsts! We expanded and diversified our board, including electing our first female Chairperson and Vice Chair! We spent our board retreat gaining valuable skills in how we can truly become a fundraising board and furthered our work on developing our Equity Strategy while continuing to engage with SKETCH youth via a new Youth Consulting Team.

One major achievement however and one that we are still very hard at work at, is re-SKETCHing a sustainable future for SKETCH. This includes re- evaluating our sources of funding revenue and taking a proactive approach to securing future funding; enhancing our board fundraising capabilities; and launching a first of its kind in Canada Charitable Bond offering that allows SKETCH to become the owner and steward of our studio and admin hubs in Artscape at 180 Shaw St. in Toronto. That's 9000 square feet of creative space for young art makers with lived experience of homelessness and marginalization!

This city, province and country needs this kind of accessible and innovative space to respond to ever-growing of youth living with homelessness and poverty who are navigating barriers to realizing their creative potential. We truly believe that to secure SKETCH's future we need to provide the SKETCH community of makers with a forever-home where deep roots can be planted and nourished for many years to come. This is especially important as an organization existing in one of the most expensive cities in the world where space is becoming unaffordable and the risk of being displaced is ever-imminent.

With that said we can't wait to share further success with you and we thank all of you for taking this journey with us. I would like to thank our wonderful staff at SKETCH and the generous funders and donors that continue to support SKETCH. And lastly but most importantly, deep gratitude to the young people that walk through our doors every day, who take risks to create and express stories and ideas through multiple art forms, who demonstrate unique capacities, visions and leadership to make change for us all.
