Program planning underway at Dartmouth North! Message from the CEO and Board Chair
It’s our privilege to submit this report on behalf of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Halifax. Preparing this report was a great reminder to us that the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact only represented two weeks of our fiscal year 2019-20. From April 1, 2019, until March 13, 2020, our Club families and kids experienced and participated in a tremendous amount and diversity of fun and engaging programs. Our Annual Report for the following year will no doubt concentrate on how the pandemic shaped our organization’s operations, and on our response and program adaptation. However, prior to the pandemic, we enjoyed many program successes and highlights.
Across all of our programs at all of our program sites, we served more than 4,100 children and youth. We added a new program site, an after school program at Admiral Westphal Elementary School, to broaden our support of families in the East Dartmouth community. Our food security and nutrition programs - our Breakfast Program, Project Backpack, and Kid Food Nation – served several hundred children. Our free youth drop-in and education programs hosted nearly 200 youth at our Club sites in Dartmouth, Spryfield, and Sackville.
Several African Nova Scotian youth in our Dartmouth programs shared their voices in a video documentary production called “The Value Project” (to be released later this year). Many other youth were able to attend former American President Barack Obama’s speech in Halifax.
Our after school program kids in Cole Harbour and Dartmouth participated in our Dunk for Diabetes basketball skills and nutrition program. We were thrilled to open a new basketball court at our Spryfield location, a much needed facelift, so our Club and community kids could have a safe outdoor space to play. With the support of our nutrition partner PC Children’s Charity, we were able to serve healthier snacks to children in our summer and after school programs. With the help of our presenting sponsor Scotiabank, we raised more than $30,000 at our Breakfast with Boys and Girls Clubs fundraising event, the most we’ve ever raised.
The Boys and Girls Club acknowledges and thanks the Nova Scotia Department of Community Services for its partnership. In 2019-20, the DCS increased its funding for our programs by $150,000. We also acknowledge and thank our local Members of Parliament and Halifax City Councillors for being a formidable opponent in our Unplug to Connect street hockey challenge!
The end of March was difficult for us, as the pandemic forced us to close our Club doors and lay off the majority of our wonderful and dedicated employees. We would like to thank our Club staff and our Club kids for their resilience and patience as our charity navigated the impact of the pandemic. We are determined to continue to serve our community’s children and adjust our programs to meet their needs.
