Reeltime Music Project will run a Music Festival in the Newarthill area of North Lanarkshire. The festival will encompass a wide variety of music forms such as ceilidh, Irish, folk, pop, club, indie, rock, dance and children’s music. It will run for a week with concerts at nine venues, a mix of pubs and community venues. Professional acts will play alongside a range of local young bands and performers, giving a unique mix that will appeal to a very wide variety of people. On the Saturday there will be a “Kids’ Gala” (at Newarthill Club) and events at and the Scottish-Lithuanian Club will take place in the afternoons, thereby appealing to different age groups. There will also be two educational workshops sessions, one for children and the second for band members. The Festival will involve the local community by allowing young people to develop their skills, creativity and confidence through ‘appearing together with established groups. A video will also be made of the event. All the events will be free apart from the event, at Newarthill Club.

C:\TEMP\REELTIMECTTEE.DOC The Festival is intended in part to replace the defunct Newarthill Gala Day.

It is expected that around 60 young performers will take part and that attendance at events should reach over 1,000. In addition, 40 people will take part in workshops.

The Festival will be Publicised via advertising in the media, the distribution of a promotional pack, through the Community Education Section, direct mail and the internet.

7. COMMENTS

This is a new project from a young organisation which was formed as part of an initiative to develop a recording studio with rehearsal and educational space. The Community Education Section provides support in kind through staff advice and assistance, the provision of premises and sessional workers. Reeltime has been involved in the preparation of the Council’s Youth Strategy. The group have also run instrumental workshops and its two staff members are experienced in event organising and music technology.

It is hoped to make the Festival an annual event.
