LAKE MONITORING LAKE MONITORING The large number of small and generally shallow lakes and wetlands in Northland are a precious resource to our region. Many of these are small dune lakes near the coast of which Lake Taharoa north of Dargaville is one of the largest with a few larger volcanic lakes inland such as Omapere and Owhareiti. These lakes and wetlands provide important habitat for a range of plant and animal species, many of which are regionally or nationally significant. Many of these lakes are also valuable for recreational users, cultural reasons, as water supplies and for their own natural beauty. Performance targets ••• Operate a region-wide water quality network for the measurement, recording and reporting of lake quality trends ••• Water quality, weed and algae monitoring of Lake Omapere and associated community liaison and advice, including the ongoing development and co- ordination of a lake catchment management plan Outcomes for 2005-2006 ••• A Lake Water Quality Monitoring Network for Northland has been developed and water quality monitoring on the 31 lakes in the network started in 2005 -2006 (refer to page 2). The 2005 – 2006 results showed that of the 31 lakes sampled 71% of them are in a eutrophic state or worse, meaning they have high nutrient and algae levels and poor water clarity. ••• Ongoing monitoring of water quality, algae, fish and plants in Lake Omapere has been carried out as part of the Lake Omapere Restoration and Management Project (refer to page 10). Natural Areas of Aupouri Ecological District
5. Summary and conclusions The Protected Natural Areas network in the Aupouri Ecological District is summarised in Table 1. Including the area of the three harbours, approximately 26.5% of the natural areas of the Aupouri Ecological District are formally protected, which is equivalent to about 9% of the total area of the Ecological District. Excluding the three harbours, approximately 48% of the natural areas of the Aupouri Ecological District are formally protected, which is equivalent to about 10.7% of the total area of the Ecological District. Protected areas are made up primarily of Te Paki Dunes, Te Arai dunelands, East Beach, Kaimaumau, Lake Ohia, and Tokerau Beach. A list of ecological units recorded in the Aupouri Ecological District and their current protection status is set out in Table 2 (page 300), and a summary of the site evaluations is given in Table 3 (page 328). Appendix 1A – SCHEDULE OF OUTSTANDING NATURAL FEATURES APPENDIX 1A: SCHEDULE OF OUTSTANDING NATURAL FEATURES (Reference: Part 3 District Wide Provisions, Section 12.1 Landscapes and Natural Features and Resource Maps) The Council is required under the Act to protect outstanding natural features and landscapes from inappropriate subdivision, use and development. There are a wide variety of human activities that may threaten the natural character, or continued existence, of important natural features within the District. In order to retain the scientific, educational and amenity values of sites of outstanding natural and geological significance, the Council has identified such sites in this Schedule and on the Resource Maps. The major source of information has been the “Inventory (and maps) of Important Geological Sites and Landforms in the Northland Region”, Geological Society of New Zealand unpublished report 95/2, edited by J Kenny and B Hayward (1995). This Inventory lists the best examples of the wide diversity of physical features and processes that together characterise New Zealand’s long and complex geological history, the formation of its landforms and evolution of its unique biota. It was compiled using the combined knowledge and advice of a large sector of the geological, geomorphological, speleological and soil science community of New Zealand. The Schedule below gives each site’s name, a brief description, the site’s significance and rating, a grid reference and map number. The rating signifies the site’s importance and vulnerability. Sites are listed in the Schedule under three levels (A-C) of significance: A International Site of international scientific importance B National Site of national scientific, educational or aesthetic importance C Regional Site of regional scientific, educational or aesthetic importance.
