Quaytman Chapter 29 ,חקק Location: 36 Orchard Street, New York, NY 10002 Dates: October 7 – November 15, 2015 Reception: Wednesday, October 7, 6 – 8PM ,Chapter 29 ,חקק Miguel Abreu Gallery is pleased to announce the opening, on Wednesday, October 7th, of R. H. Quaytman’s second solo exhibition at the gallery. The show will be on view at our 36 Orchard Street location. Chapter 29,1 originally presented this past spring ,חקק This exhibition comprises a small selection of works from at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. In addition, a group of paintings will be shown that are based on a discovery R. H. Quaytman made a few weeks following the Tel Aviv opening. This discovery concerns Paul Klee’s Angelus Novus (1920), which the artist had the rare opportunity to view in person two years ago in the offices of the Israel Museum, Jerusalem. Quaytman saw something that previously had gone unnoticed—that Klee had purposefully glued the Angelus Novus monoprint directly onto an old engraving. The engraving, clearly visible around all four sides, hinted at a portrait of a single figure in a black robe made by someone with the initials LC in the 1520’s. This struck Quaytman as highly relevant, not only to what Klee intended with this gesture of defacement, but also to Walter Benjamin’s well known essay, “On the Concept of History,” which situates the temporal past in front, not behind, the Angel. In cooperation with the paper conservation department at the Israel Museum, Quaytman embarked on a two year pursuit to uncover the identity of this occluded subject.

Photo Shiraz Grinbaum. Ilit Azoulay is best known for panoramic photomontages such as The Keys (2010) and Room #8 (2011), which depict arrangements of materials she has collected from demolished buildings around south Tel Aviv. These buildings were constructed as housing for immigrants who flooded the area in the 1940s and '50s. Azoulay first visited the buildings before demolition, exploring their rooms and examining their walls; after demolition, she returned, searching through the remains and gathering bits and pieces of them. In her studio, she carefully sorted and catalogued her findings. She then photographed the various items separately, under uniform lighting conditions and from the same head-on vantage point, using a digital camera with a macro lens (designed for close-ups). To create each photomontage, Azoulay carried out a long, labor-intensive process of digital assembly. She first patched together numerous photographs of wall textures to create an expansive wall image that would serve as a background—and, in a sense, a tabula rasa—for her photographed objects. She then arranged her image—objects against this fabricated wall in playful compositions inspired by museum and archival displays. These panoramic tableaux present objects without hierarchy and offer a new world that is as realistic as it is abstract. The objects, which suggest historical relics, do not appear in realistic scale to one another, and clear links between them seem always to elude us; they exist in a kind of poetic syntax.
