A Scottish Celebration of the Solstice

december 8–10 & 15–17, 2017 oakland scottish rite center david parr, artistic director Director’s Note: Scottish Revels

Restaurant Provençal Why aren’t there any Scottish Christmas carols? Well, there is one. Talladh Chriosda, a hauntingly beautiful “Christ child” lullaby said to date back to the 1400’s. It was traditionally performed at Christmas midnight mass on the Isles of Uist in the Outer Hebrides. But on mainland Scotland, the holiday was not observed in song or any other form for over 400 years. An authentic taste of France The reason was a 1640 act of the Scottish parliament that confirmed the prohibition of Breakfast • Lunch • Dinner “Yule vacation and all observation thereof in time coming”. In the wake of the Protestant Reformation, any observance of the traditional Christmas holiday — including carol- ing — was deemed an affront to the new orthodoxy and outlawed. This continued until 1958. Which isn’t to say that Scots didn’t celebrate the season. The Yuletide, or turning of the year, was too large an event to go unobserved, and so Hogmanay, the welcoming of the return of the light in the new year, became the focus of Scottish seasonal celebration. Events such as first-footing — the passage of a handsome stranger into the house — and the aromatic burning of the Hogmanay skin marked the crossing into the coming days. Award-winning garden, open seasonally Of course, feasting and the consumption of copious amounts of Scotch whiskey, steak pie and shortbread were a part of it, and the lusty singing of Auld Lang Syne marked the striking of the midnight hour. These traditions have continued, even after the recognition of Christmas was legalized in 1958. Old observances have a deeply rooted power, and the kindling of the Yule log and even the celebration of the Haggis point to the depth of tradition and the bonding to generations that have preceded us. You’ll see many of these rituals in this year’s Scottish Celebration of the Solstice. The Scottish dances you are about to see are taken instead from the classic heyday of country dancing, from the early 18th to mid 19th centuries. Highland The Program dance of that time was closely related to the country style; consisting of energetic steps, but not yet the formal virtuoso Highland Fling. The charm and verve of act one these early dances, though, come through just as clearly as in the modern forms. It is easy to see why Scottish dance captured the enthusiasm of Victorian Britain. I want to thank Sheena MacQueen for her suggestions of beautiful historical dances and good tunes. Once I had selected dances, the Scottish-Country-Dancing Dictionary site was my primary source for written instructions. Today, Scottish Country Dancing is a popular and very enjoyable activity done throughout the Bay Area. The community extends a warm welcome to individuals 1. The Highland emigrants to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia in the years 1784–1820 retained this older, closer-to-the-floor tap- dance style. These dances often have diagonal pairs changing places, and partners swinging instead of setting to each other. The song itself was sung by members of a drinking club, Crochallan Fencibles, of which Burns was a member. The title may refer to William Dunbar, the club president, or William Smellie, who printed the first Edinburgh edition of Burns’ poems.

11. Good Night and Joy be with You All Attributed to Robert Burns, this song has evolved into The Parting Glass, the popular Scots-Irish air sung at the end of celebratory festivities. Burns himself decreed that the title of this piece would one day serve as his final farewell “to the whole of the human race”. The tune appears in Playford’s Original Scottish Tunes of 1700, but it was known at least as early as 1605, when a portion of the first stanza was written in a farewell letter, as a poem now known as Armstrong’s Good Night & Joy.
