Abstract Competition for Soft Power in Nineteenth ABSTRACT COMPETITION FOR SOFT POWER IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY ANGLO-AMERICAN RELATIONS AS EXEMPLIFIED BY MID-VICTORIAN BRITISH NOVELS Melina R. Probst, Ph.D. Department of English Northern Illinois University, 2015 Dr. Brian May, Director The representation of America in Victorian fiction follows a trajectory of increasing favorability after the War of 1812 and before the Civil War, when America, still an interested subject across the Atlantic, became more uncouth and unjust by the British standard; however, the reasons for this trajectory are not as simple as pointing to a damaged economy and disfigured political image brought about by the Civil War. Favorable depictions of America depended on its power and the strength of competitive countries; in other words, as long as America remained powerful and attractive, thereby possessing more than just brute military strength, Great Britain respected and at times deferred to America. I use Joseph S. Nye’s international relations theory of soft power to explain British representations of America and, at times, Canada as functions of a state’s need to adapt to international shifts in values and interests; in other words, America’s popularity and upward immigration trend each decade before the Civil War forced other powerful Western states to acknowledge its status as a competitor. The most favorable fictional representations of America coincide with its soft-power apex, the high point in the kind of attractiveness derived from culture, values, and economic opportunity. A noticeably substantial change in the nineteenth century occurred at the time in the early 1840s when Charles Dickens and Frederick Marryat travelled to North America and then narrated and fictionalized their experiences; at this time, America’s relatively newfound strength challenged preconceived British notions of the former colony, thereby resulting in ambivalent attitudes towards it. Additionally, the importance of soft power is evident in the late 1840s when many European states were facing tumultuous revolutions, the United States was prospering by its westward expansion, and Charlotte Brontë and Elizabeth Gaskell were writing novels preferring the North American frontier to the settled British landscape. But by the 1860s, when America’s internal fighting and weak economy during the Civil War damaged its reputation, British authors, such as Mary Elizabeth Braddon and Charlotte Yonge, used that opportunity to aggrandize Great Britain. While many European states were zealously participating in an arms race, wielding their hard power, which can be described as aggressive military or economic strength, mid-Victorian British novelists understood the potency of soft power in negotiating international relations and capitalizing on the weaknesses and strengths of another state. The theoretical framework of this dissertation grew out of conversations not only with my director, who encouraged me to be innovative, but also a friend, Michael Tolhurst, who has a background in political science; through these conversations with him, I discovered that Joseph S. Nye, Jr.’s, international relations theory could explain trends in mid-Victorian literature. I am also indebted to committee member Dr. Jeffrey Einboden, who advised me early in my graduate career to realize the “constellation” of my work, to connect the shorter papers to find an underlying trend that would identify me as a scholar. From that prompting, I noticed I was usually drawn to transatlantic relations. Another committee member, Dr. Kathleen Renk, encouraged my classmates and me in our coursework to turn our attention to non-canonical authors, and such guidance prompted me to include works by authors relatively forgotten and underappreciated. All three committee members, especially my chair, provided invaluable feedback for chapter revisions. Additionally, the amazing kindness and assistance of individuals in the Department of English, from the staff, such as Jan Vander Meer, and professors, such as Dr. Mark Van Wienen iii and Dr. Thomas McCann, to fellow dissertators, such as Elyse Lamszus, made the writing, revising, and defending process simpler.     Ernest Hemingway Global American Modernist Lisa Tyler Sinclair Community College, USA Iconic American modernist Ernest Hemingway spent his entire adult life in an interna- tional (although primarily English-speaking) modernist milieu interested in breaking with the traditions of the past and creating new art forms. Throughout his lifetime he traveled extensively, especially in France, Spain, Italy, Cuba, and what was then British East Africa (now Kenya and Tanzania), and wrote about all of these places: “For we have been there in the books and out of the books – and where we go, if we are any good, there you can go as we have been” (Hemingway 1935, 109). At the time of his death, he was a global celebrity recognized around the world. His writings were widely translated during his lifetime and are still taught in secondary schools and universities all over the globe. Ernest Hemingway was born 21 July 1899, in Oak Park, Illinois, also the home of Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the most famous modernist architects in the world. Hemingway could look across the street from his childhood home and see one of Wright’s innovative designs (Hays 2014, 54). As he was growing up, Hemingway and his family often traveled to nearby Chicago to visit the Field Museum of Natural History and the Chicago Opera House. Because of the 1871 fire that destroyed structures over more than three square miles of the city, a substantial part of Chicago had become a clean slate on which late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century architects could design what a modern city should look like.

    The Summa Theologiae and the Reformed Traditions Christoph Schwöbel 1. Luther and Thomas Aquinas: A Conflict over Authority? On 10 December 1520 at the Elster Gate of Wittenberg, Martin Luther burned his copy of the papal bull Exsurge domine, issued by pope Leo X on 15 June of that year, demanding of Luther to retract 41 errors from his writings. The time for Luther to react obediently within 60 days had expired on that date. The book burning was a response to the burning of Luther’s works which his adversary Johannes Eck had staged in a number of cities. Johann Agricola, Luther’s student and president of the Paedagogium of the University, who had organized the event at the Elster Gate, also got hold of a copy of the books of canon law which was similarly committed to the flames. Following contemporary testimonies it is probable that Agricola had also tried to collect copies of works of scholastic theology for the burning, most notably the Summa Theologiae. However, the search proved unsuccessful and the Summa was not burned alongside the papal bull since the Wittenberg theologians – Martin Luther arguably among them – did not want to relinquish their copies.1 The event seems paradigmatic of the attitude of the early Protestant Reformers to the Summa and its author. In Luther’s writings we find relatively frequent references to Thomas Aquinas, although not exact quotations.2 With regard to the person of Thomas Luther could gleefully report on the girth of Thomas Aquinas, including the much-repeated story that he could eat a whole goose in one go and that a hole had to be cut into his table to allow him to sit at the table at all.3 At the same time Luther could also relate several times and in different contexts in his table talks how Thomas at the time of his death experienced such grave spiritual temptations that he could not hold out against the devil until he confounded him by embracing his Bible, saying: “I believe what is written in this book.”4 At least on some occasions Luther 1 Cf.

    “Stories of Things Remote: (Re)Placing the Self in 19th-century Adventure Fiction” Timothy Scott Hayes A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English and Comparative Literature Chapel Hill 2007 Approved by: Professor John McGowan Professor Laurie Langbauer Professor Timothy Marr Professor Jeanne Moskal Professor James Thompson ABSTRACT Timothy Scott Hayes: “Stories of Things Remote: (Re)Placing the Self in 19th-century Adventure Fiction” (Under the direction of John McGowan) In this dissertation, I argue that, rather than offering mere escapist distractions from their own troubled societies or simply reinforcing imperial ideologies, adventure novels by Melville, Stevenson, and Conrad directly explore the challenges of maintaining a stable self in the newly globalized spaces of the nineteenth century. Exploring the myriad possibilities of life in colonial spaces, these novels portray the struggles of European and American characters to adjust to the complex spaces of the colonial world. Departing from their relatively homogeneous societies in search of “adventure,” these characters must create new justifying narratives to explain their tenuous lives in the challenging environments that they encounter. Utilizing narrative theory as well as contemporary definitions of space, I analyze the harrowing realities that these novels often present about the costs of failed imperial ideologies and practices on individual selves. Embarking on their adventures with a strong belief in their own moral superiority, these novels‟ protagonists soon realize, often in shattering ways, that the new world they have entered openly resists the grand narratives they have come to believe.
