INTERPOLATED AMEN'S IN THE CANON OF THE MASS ÖERALD ELLARD, S.J., PH.D. St. Mary^s College FJEW things are so venerable, few so carefully guarded, as the canon *• of the Roman Mass. It is indicative of how highly it was regarded from the very earliest period that the oldest Latin Mass-books of Spain, Gaul, and Ireland, different as they are in so many respects, all spontaneously adopted that Roman canon, which Pope Vigilius had described in 538, shortly before Gregory the Great was born, as of apostolic antiquity: "textum . .quern Deo propitio ex apostolica tradi- tione suscepimus."1 True, the canon, as we use it now, is called Gregorian in perpetuation of the memory of the revision, slight and insignificant, that Gregory gave it around 595. For all that, the canon in our Mass-book contains four interpolated amen's—at the conclusion of the prayers Communicantes, Rane igitur, Supplices, and Memento etiam—and narrowly missed permanently acquiring a fifth one, at the end of the Nobis quoque peccatoribus. This article centers attention on those adventitious amen's and seeks to unravel their story somewhat more accurately than I have seen it set out elsewhere. There is need of greater precision in the matter. Thus, Dom Bernard Botte, in his definitive Le canon de la Messe, edition critique, in the excellent apparatus criticus setting out the variant readings of the oldest texts, hinted that these four amen's came in with the edition of the canon printed at Rome in 1474.2 He adduced that particular edition of the Roman Mass-book because it then issued in print for the first time and has been reprinted nowadays for our con sultation. -

It is our intention that religious programs will promote positive values and moral practices to foster healthy relationships, especially within the families of those under our jurisdiction and within the communities to which they are returning. As a Department, we commit to providing religious as well as cultural opportunities for offenders within available resources, while maintaining facility security, safety, health and orderly operations. The Department will not endorse any religious faith or cultural group, but we will ensure that religious programming is consistent with the provisions of federal and state statutes, and will work hard with the Religious, Cultural and Faith Communities to ensure that the needs of the incarcerated community are fairly met. This desk manual has been prepared for use by chaplains, administrators and other staff of the Washington State Department of Corrections. It is not meant to be an exhaustive study of all religions. It does provide a brief background of most religions having participants housed in Washington prisons. This manual is intended to provide general guidelines, and define practice and procedure for Washington State Department of Corrections institutions. It is intended to be used in conjunction with Department policy. While it does not confer theological expertise, it will, provide correctional workers with the information necessary to respond too many of the religious concerns commonly encountered. -

Introduction to the 2018 Convocation for Restoration and Renewal of the Undivided Church: Through a renewed Catholicity – Dublin, Ireland – March 2018 The Polish National Catholic Church and the Declaration and Union of Scranton by the Very Rev. Robert M. Nemkovich Jr. The Polish National Catholic Church promulgated the Declaration of Scranton in 2008 to preserve true and genuine Old Catholicism and allow for a Union of Churches that would be a beacon for and home to people of all nations who aspire to union with the pristine faith of the undivided Church. The Declaration of Scranton “is modeled heavily on the 1889 Declaration of Utrecht of the Old Catholic Churches. This is true not only in its content, but also in the reason for its coming to fruition.”1 The Polish National Catholic Church to this day holds the Declaration of Utrecht as a normative document of faith. To understand the origins of the Declaration of Utrecht we must look back not only to the origin of the Old Catholic Movement as a response to the First Vatican Council but to the very see of Utrecht itself. “The bishopric of Utrecht, which until the sixteenth century had been the only bishopric in what is now Dutch territory, was founded by St. Willibrord, an English missionary bishop from Yorkshire.”2 Willibrord was consecrated in Rome by Pope Sergius I in 696, given the pallium of an archbishop and given the see of Utrecht by Pepin, the Mayor of the Palace of the Merovingian dynasty. Utrecht became under Willibrord the ecclesiastical capital of the Northern Netherlands. -

Mozarabic chant Mozarabic chant (also known as Hispanic chant, itself until after 1014, at the request of the Holy Roman Old Hispanic chant, Old Spanish chant, or Visig- Emperor Henry II.) othic chant) is the liturgical plainchant repertory of the Visigothic/Mozarabic rite of the Roman Catholic Church, related to the Gregorian chant. It is primarily associated with Hispania under Visigothic rule (mainly in what was to become modern Spain) and with the Catholic Visigoths/Mozarabs living under Muslim rule, and was soon replaced by the chant of the Roman rite following the Christian Reconquest. Although its original medieval form is largely lost, a few chants have survived with read- able musical notation, and the chanted rite was later re- vived in altered form and continues to be used in a few isolated locations in Spain, primarily in Toledo.
