HEROES and HERO WORSHIP.—Carlyle
z 2 J51 ^ 3 05 i 1 m Copyright, 1899, by Henry Altemus. LECTURE I. THE HERO AS DIVINITY. ODIN. PAGANISM : SCAN^ DINAVIAN MYTHOLOGY. We have undertaken to discourse here for a little on Great Men, their manner of appearance in our world's business, how they have shaped themselves in the world's history, what ideas, men formed of them, what work they did ; —on Heroes, namely, and on their reception- and per- formance ; what I call Hero-worship and the Heroic in human affairs. Too evidently this is a large topic ; deserving quite other treatment than we can expect to give it at present. A large topic ; indeed, an illimitable one ; wide as Universal History itself. For, as I take it. Uni- versal History, the history of what man has- accomplished in this world, is at bottom the His- ! 6 Xecturcs on Ibcroes, tory of the Great Men who have worked here. They were the leaders of men, these great ones ; the modellers, patterns, and in a wide sense creators, of whatsoever the general mass of men contrived to do or to attain •, all things that we see standing accomplished in the world are properly the outer material result, the practical realization and embodiment, of Thoughts that dwelt in the Great Men sent into the world : the soul of the whole world's history, it may justly be considered, were the history of these. -
Carl Sandburg
The International Journal of Reminiscence and Life Review © 2016 The Author 2016, Volume 3, Issue 1, pp. 61-63 http://143.95.253.101/~radfordojs/index.php/IJRLR Shared Reminiscence Carl Sandburg David Cooley Hendersonville, North Carolina In 1945, Carl Sandburg and his wife, Lillian, moved to the Hendersonville area from a small farm on the shores of Lake Michigan. A lot of people in the area wondered why this famous man had chosen our little community as his new home. He had paid what was thought to be an astounding price of $45,000 for 248 acres of land that included a three-story main house, a barn complex and several outbuildings. Mr. Sandburg reportedly said he felt he'd bought an entire “village,” and Mrs. Sandburg, a breeder of champion milk goats told friends that they had bought “a million acres of sky.” The estate was once owned by C. G. Memminger, the first secretary of the Confederacy. I wonder if Mr. Sandburg, the greatest Lincoln authority knew this or, if he did, found it somewhat ironic. I collected his garbage I was required to read some of his writings in high school, but the first time I came face to face with Carl Sandburg was an early morning at his home in Flat Rock. I had, along with John Shepherd, an older friend, established the first rural garbage collection service in Hendersonville. I was a junior in high school. Sandburg was a customer. “Come on in,” he said, as I went to his kitchen door to pick up his garbage. -

The Formulaic Dynamics of Character Behavior in Lucan Howard Chen
Breakthrough and Concealment: The Formulaic Dynamics of Character Behavior in Lucan Howard Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Howard Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Breakthrough and Concealment: The Formulaic Dynamics of Character Behavior in Lucan Howard Chen This dissertation analyzes the three main protagonists of Lucan’s Bellum Civile through their attempts to utilize, resist, or match a pattern of action which I call the “formula.” Most evident in Caesar, the formula is a cycle of alternating states of energy that allows him to gain a decisive edge over his opponents by granting him the ability of perpetual regeneration. However, a similar dynamic is also found in rivers, which thus prove to be formidable adversaries of Caesar in their own right. Although neither Pompey nor Cato is able to draw on the Caesarian formula successfully, Lucan eventually associates them with the river-derived variant, thus granting them a measure of resistance (if only in the non-physical realm). By tracing the development of the formula throughout the epic, the dissertation provides a deeper understanding of the importance of natural forces in Lucan’s poem as well as the presence of an underlying drive that unites its fractured world. Walk Two Moons
WALK TWO MOONS SHARON CREECH WINNER OF THE NEWBERY MEDAL A Face at the Window Gramps says that I am a country girl at heart, and that is true. I have lived most of my thirteen years in Bybanks, Kentucky, which is not much more than a caboodle of houses roosting in a green spot alongside the Ohio River. Just over a year ago, my father plucked me up like a weed and took me and all our belongings (no, that is not true - he did not bring the chestnut tree or the willow or the maple or the hayloft or the swimming hole or any of those things which belong to me) and we drove three hundred miles straight north and stopped in front of a house in Euclid, Ohio. 'Where are the trees?' I said. 'This is where we're going to live?' 'No,' my father said. 'This is Margaret's house.' The front door of the house opened, and Margaret, the lady with the wild red hair, stood there. I looked up and down the street. The buildings were all jammed together like a row of birdhouses In front of each one was a tiny square of grass, and in front of that was a long, long cement sidewalk running alongside the cement road. 'Where's the barn?' I asked. 'Where's the river? Where's the swimming hole?' 'Oh, Sal,' my father said. 'Come along. There's Margaret.' He waved to the lady at the door. 'We have to go back.' I said 'I forgot something. -

I’m Shannon Yearwood, the Education Manager with the Child Nutrition Programs at the Connecticut State Department of Education. 0:17 Joining me today is who I like to refer to as “Team Awesome,” because you have probably the best state administrators that any State could ask for, and they are right here as a resource for you to tap into. You know these are very strange times and just because this is the end of the Table Talk for this school year does not mean we are going anywhere. So certainly keep reaching out to us with your questions. 0:40 Um you guys know who your contacts are out there, who's on our team, so thank you so much for joining us. 0:45 Uh keep in mind, these at this will act as an open office hours, so certainly ask us your questions, type those into the box. We might run out of time, we have a packed agenda today, um and so that will help us be able to follow up with you. Or potentially develop some more resources that we know that that's some information that is good for the entire state, so thank you again for joining us, um and keep in mind these are recorded. -

Treacherous 'Saracens' and Integrated Muslims
TREACHEROUS ‘SARACENS’ AND INTEGRATED MUSLIMS: THE ISLAMIC OUTLAW IN ROBIN HOOD’S BAND AND THE RE-IMAGINING OF ENGLISH IDENTITY, 1800 TO THE PRESENT 1 ERIC MARTONE Stony Brook University [email protected] 53 In a recent Associated Press article on the impending decay of Sherwood Forest, a director of the conservancy forestry commission remarked, “If you ask someone to think of something typically English or British, they think of the Sherwood Forest and Robin Hood… They are part of our national identity” (Schuman 2007: 1). As this quote suggests, Robin Hood has become an integral component of what it means to be English. Yet the solidification of Robin Hood as a national symbol only dates from the 19 th century. The Robin Hood legend is an evolving narrative. Each generation has been free to appropriate Robin Hood for its own purposes and to graft elements of its contemporary society onto Robin’s medieval world. In this process, modern society has re-imagined the past to suit various needs. One of the needs for which Robin Hood has been re-imagined during late modern history has been the refashioning of English identity. What it means to be English has not been static, but rather in a constant state of revision during the past two centuries. Therefore, Robin Hood has been adjusted accordingly. Fictional narratives erase the incongruities through which national identity was formed into a linear and seemingly inevitable progression, thereby fashioning modern national consciousness. As social scientist Etiénne Balibar argues, the “formation of the nation thus appears as the fulfillment of a ‘project’ stretching over centuries, in which there are different stages and moments of coming to self-awareness” (1991: 86). -
