Cyclone Amphan, the strongest storm ever recorded in the

Climate Change Volunteers role:

Government of managed to take 2.4 million people of coast in the shelter.

MJF project partners volunteers were also active and miking about the severity

of the strong cyclone and importance to go for near shelter. It was challenged to shift villagers to shelters.

Social distancing and health related

precautions could not be maintained in all cyclone centers due to limited number of cyclone center against the huge population. Government started

taking stock taking of damage of life and wealth of people in Amphan affected area.

Amphan hit on 20th May 2020

The center of this powerful cyclone

crossed Shatkhira coast by 9 pm with wind speed of 151 km/hour1. The impact of Amphan was higher at

Shatkhira to Potuakhali coast. In shatkhira, Patuakhali, Barguna, Bagerhat, Khulna and Bhola districts. It continues almost whole night.

Loss and damage

Embankment damaged in several points of shatkhira, Patuakhali, Barguna,

Bagerhat, Khulna and Bhola districts. A total of 23 points of embankment damaged due to cyclone and inundated a total of 50 villages in Shatkhira and 1 8 km. of embankment demolished in Patuakhali . Due to 1 Amphan 10 persons died in of Bangladesh . Electronic media reported that 16 died in different districts. Over 1.5 crore subscribers were left without electricity in a dozen districts1. The cyclone not only damaged in coastal areas,

it has also kept its footprint on upper part of Bangladesh. Due to damage of embankment hundreds of villages were inundated in above mentioned districts and tidal surges battered the char areas in Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Barishal and Laxmipur districts1.

Coordination with government and local disaster committee

All five district, upzilla and Union disaster committee were active and coordinated efforts with all stakeholders confirmed. Partners and community representative were also taking participation in all meetings called by local government.

Impact on project area:

MJF, partners and even government don’t have any concert impact information from those affected area of five districts. All are still struggling to reach all remotest place to collect information on affected area. Five partners are working on climate change impact and resilience in coastal belt.

Status of damage: A quick assessment by local volunteers

CDS WORKING AREA

• District: Bhola : Tozumuddin Unions: Chandpur, Shambhupurand Chanchra • 30-35 houses partially damaged. Standing crops aquaculture damaged. Two points of embankment repaired instantly by local people and volunteers of CDS as those became vulnerable. • 2 died outside our project upazila (1 in Cha fassion and 1 in Borhanuddin)

. HHs damaged in all union of project area. Burigoalini and Paddopukur affected most. Damaged embankment in both Burigoalini and Paddopukur unions. At burigoalini 200-250 HHs damaged, 70-80 crab hatcheries and 200-250 fish gher fully damaged. At Paddopukur 5 villages were inundated and damaged fish Gher. . Still no information from remote place

JJS working area District: Bagerhat Upazilla: Mongla Unions: Chila, Sundarban, Burirdangg, Chadpai, Mithakhali, Suniltola

The whole upazila damaged by cyclone. Embankment damaged in 2 points of working union and inundated unions namely chila (50 HHs) and chadpai (20 HHs). Besides this total aquaculture damaged in this 6 unions and crops are partially damaged. More than 400 and 1100 HHs were fully and partially damaged respectively in 6 union of working area.

VERC WORKING AREA

DISTRICT: PATUAKHALI UPAZILLA : RANGABALI UNIONS: CHAR MONTAZ, BORO BAISHDIA, CHOTO BAISHDIA, RANGABATI

• Inundated some areas of Char Montaz union. Some Boro damaged in Boro Baishdia union. Mug bean damaged in Ranglabali and Choto Baisdia union. Aquaculture outside embankment of these unions damaged totally.

NSS WORKING AREA District:Patuakhali Upazilla: Kolapara Unions: Baliatali, Lalua, Mithagong, Dalbugong, Champapur, Nilgong, Tiakhali, Latachapli • 7 villages of Lalua and some portion of Tiakhali union inundated totally during high tide. Damaged chilli in Dablugang and Latachapli union. Melon cultivation also damaged in LSatachapli union. Aquaculture of 7 villages of Lalua. Also damaged aquaculture outside embankment area in Nilganj, Mithakahli, Dabluganj and Champapur union District: Barguna Upazilla: Pathorghata Unions: Kalmegha, pathorghata sadar, Chaduani, kathaltoli • Three villages outside embankment of Sadar union inundated during high tide. Water already recedes but caused damage of HHs.

Partners and volunteers are communicating with community and local Union Parishads to collect information of cyclone Amphan impact on household, agriculture, aquaculture, infrastructure damage from working area. They are also assessing needs of vulnerable
