In particular, we would like to thank Shina DuVall, Archaeologist in the Alaska State Historic Preservation Office, for her guidance and feedback; Doug Tosa, GIS Analyst with the Alaska Center for the Environment, for his mapping and technical assistance; and NARF staff Shay Elbaum and Jill Rush, for their editorial contributions. 1 Executive Summary The intent of this document is to explain why the Ch’u’itnu (Chuitt River) drainage1 of Cook Inlet, Alaska constitutes a Traditional Cultural Landscape (TCL) associated with the indigenous Tyonek Dena’ina, or Tubughna,2 people. The Ch’u’itnu TCL as described in this paper should be recognized as eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP or “National Register”), for purposes of assessing and resolving adverse effects on it under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and its implementing regulations in 36 C.F.R. Part 800. The Tubughna people have used and occupied the Ch’u’itnu drainage as an essential part of their traditional territory since time immemorial. The landscape along the river, including the river mouth, has been and continues to be a place where the Tubughna carry out subsistence resource harvests, settlement, celebrations of life, and travel to accomplish these purposes. -

The Spirit and the Gifts: Dako, Benjamin Morrell and Cargo in the Vitiaz Trading area, New Guinea Jennifer Blythe McMaster University James Fairhead, University of Sussex ABSTRACT In 1830 an American trader, Benjamin Morrell, abducted Dako, the son of a prominent leader from Uneapa Island in the Bismarck Sea, took him to New York and, four years later, returned him to Uneapa. Dako‘s encounter with America and his return provides insight into the region half a century before colonization, and in particular into local mytho-practical knowledge at that time. This enables us to discern subsequent transformations. Myths concerning an origin spirit and guardian of the dead, Pango, which then dominated Uneapa cosmology have since ‗disappeared‘. This, we argue, is not because Pango has been superseded or suppressed, but because the parallel ‗white‘ world over which the mytho- practical Pango presided has become ever more manifest as Uneapa has been drawn into a colonial, post-colonial and globalised world. Today, Pango refers predominantly to white people. Islander‘s experience of American ‗Pango‘ was a shocking event at the time, but we show how trading with Pango established transformatory possibilities for reciprocal trading relations with the dead which remain the concern of today‘s Cult movement on the island. CIRI shareholder Clara Amidon (Yup’ik and Unangan) never dreamed she’d be teaching virtually during a pandemic. In fact, growing up in Alaska’s Bristol Bay region in the 1960s and early ‘70s, her family didn’t even own a television. “We moved to Anchorage when I was 13, after my father passed away,” Clara recalls. “The city was a culture shock, and it took me a long while to get my footing. There were roads, homes, color TV… And not just one store—there were many! “How to fit in, how to adapt—it’s a learning process, and I remember it well,” Clara continued. “And then that survival mechanism kicks in. You figure things out quickly as a young person, especially as a young Native person, because Our People are taught to observe.” Those early memories helped prepare Clara for a career in teaching, first in Anchorage School District (ASD) public schools and then, for the last 13 years, at the Alaska Native Cultural Charter School (ANCCS). A K-8 school, the mission of the ANCCS is to build student excellence through traditional cultural learning. -

Transmotion Vol 1, No 2 (2015) “Carried in the Arms of Standing Waves:” The Transmotional Aesthetics of Nora Marks Dauenhauer1 BILLY J. STRATTON In October 2012 Nora Marks Dauenhauer was selected for a two-year term as Alaska State Writer Laureate in recognition of her tireless efforts in preserving Tlingit language and culture, as well as her creative contributions to the state’s literary heritage. A widely anthologized author of stories, plays and poetry, Dauenhauer has published two books, The Droning Shaman (1988) and Life Woven With Song (2000). Despite these contributions to the ever-growing body of native American literary discourse her work has been overlooked by scholars of indigenous/native literature.2 The purpose of the present study is to bring attention to Dauenhauer’s significant efforts in promoting Tlingit peoplehood and cultural survivance through her writing, which also offers a unique example of transpacific discourse through its emphasis on sites of dynamic symmetry between Tlingit and Japanese Zen aesthetics. While Dauenhauer’s poesis is firmly grounded in Tlingit knowledge and experience, her creative work is also notable for the way it negotiates Tlingit cultural adaptation in response to colonial oppression and societal disruption through the inclusion of references to modern practices and technologies framed within an adaptive socio-historical context. Through literary interventions on topics such as land loss, environmental issues, and the social and political status of Tlingit people within the dominant Euro-American culture, as well as poems about specific family members, Dauenhauer merges the individual and the communal to highlight what the White Earth Nation of Anishinaabeg novelist, poet and philosopher, Gerald Vizenor, conceives as native cultural survivance.3 She demonstrates her commitment to “documenting Tlingit language and oral tradition” in her role as co-editor, along with her husband, Richard, of the acclaimed series: Classics of Tlingit Oral Literature (47). -

OF AMERICA Nativity Encyclical 2014 Beloved children in the Lord, Christ is Born! Glorify Him! On this year’s feast of our Lord’s Nativity in the Flesh, I think it is appropriate for us to reflect upon the blessings God has granted us during the past year; and moreover, why He has granted such blessings. The Lord’s Nativity brings us new life; it renews Christ’s grace within us. In the exaposteilarion of the feast, we chant “the Lord hath visited His people from on High.” This year, we are able to perceive the Lord’s visitation very clearly in light of the blessed union of True Orthodox Christians which we all have so earnestly desired. We are now witnesses of the great mystery of unity. “Behold what is so joyous as for brethren to dwell together in unity!” After decades of separation, the Church has victoriously triumphed! I believe that this miracle has taken place primarily through the intercessions of the saints of modern times. Here in America, three groups that were separated in the past - the GOC, the majority of HOCNA, and the Synod in Resistance - are now united under the protection of our Mother Church of Greece. Yet though we belong to the Greek Church, one of the things which makes our local church of America unique is the fact that all of us have roots in the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad. -

Anderson, Chair Virginia L. Butler Douglas C. Wilson Portland State University 2018 Abstract Activities and production among ethnographic Arctic peoples were primarily divided by gender. This gendered division of labor also extended to a spatial segregated pattern of the household in some Arctic cultures. Other cultures had a more gender-integrated spatial pattern of the household. There have been very few archaeological studies of gender in the Arctic, and even fewer studies of gendered use of space. In this thesis, I evaluated the existence of this gendered use of space in pre-contact Northwest Alaska. -

LOCAL NO. 7 Accession No. 3927-001 GUIDE HISTORY The Cannery Workers' and Farm Laborers' Union was organized June 19, 1933 in Seattle to represent the primarily Filipino-American laborers who worked in the Alaska salmon canneries. Filipino Alaskeros first appeared in the canneries around 1911. In the 1920s as exclusionary immigration laws went into effect, they replaced the Japanese, who had replaced the Chinese in the canneries. Workers were recruited through labor contractors who were paid to provide a work crew for the summer canning season. The contractor paid workers wages and other expenses. This system led to many abuses and harsh working conditions from which grew the movement toward unionization. The CWFLU, under the leadership of its first President, Virgil Duyungan, was chartered as Local 19257 by the American Federation of Labor in 1933. On December 1, 1936 an agent of a labor contractor murdered Duyungan and Secretary Aurelio Simon.
