Cont. from p1 A promising third in last November=s GII Remsen S. at Aqueduct, Wicked Strong failed to move forward in his first two sophomore starts at Gulfstream, but put it all together with a rallying daylight victory in the GI TwinSpires.com Wood Memorial S. Apr. 5. He settled for fourth in both the GI Kentucky Derby and Belmont, but returned to winning ways while adding blinkers and front wraps in the Jim Dandy for red-hot conditioner Jimmy Jerkens. AIt was a combination of blinkers and [rider] Wicked Strong Rajiv [Maragh] NYRA/Coglianese sending him from there because he wanted to get a nice spot going into the turn that made him close to the pace,@ Jerkens said of Wicked Strong=s increased early interest in the Jim Dandy. AI don't think it's going to make him rank by any means. I can't deny that he does seem to run straighter and truer with them on, no question." Jerkens, who took the 2010 Travers with Afleet Express (Afleet Alex), will also saddle Magalen Bryant=s V. E. Day (English Channel) as that runner seeks his fourth-straight victory. Winless in two tries on the turf to start his career, the chestnut graduated from off the pace in a sloppy rained-off affair at Belmont in May before annexing a grassy allowance July 2. His connections opted to take a shot back on the dirt in this venue=s July 25 Curlin S., and were rewarded when he flew home to out-head Charge Now (Tiznow). AV. E. Showdown at the Spa cont.

GI Travers S. - #6 Tonalist (3-1) Part of me wants to go with a bigger price like Mr Speaker or Viva Majorca, but I just can’t abandon Tonalist. He’s the true 10-furlong horse in this race, and I still don’t think he’s gotten the credit he deserves for his Belmont win. He only won by a head and the time wasn’t exceptionally fast, but according to Trakus he covered 67 ft. (almost eight lengths) more than runner-up Commissioner. He likely wasn’t fully cranked last time for the Jim Dandy when Wicked Strong beat him pretty easily, but I think that dynamics had more to do with that than anything. While Wicked Strong was right up on the slow pace, Tonalist was wrangled back and kept well out in the clear early. It was a ride you might see on an odds-on horse who couldn’t really lose-- Tonalist was less than even-money, but he wasn’t that kind of sure thing by any means. Tonalist took a big run at Wicked Strong at the head of the lane, but he had already expended more energy than his rival at that point, so it’s no big surprise that he got turned back, especially if he wasn’t 100%. The big question here is pace. Bayern is fast enough to get as clear as he wants to, but 1 1/4 miles figures to be a tall task for him, and if somebody’s going to keep him honest it’s probably going to be the newly blinkered Wicked Strong. I see Tonalist tracking those two in third, and ultimately prevailing in the final furlong. Wager: $100 Win on #6 Tonalist.

GI Ballerina S. - #5 Willet (6-1) A 6-year-old still on the improve? That's my take on the lightly raced Willet after a pair of big efforts versus NY-breds this season. She gave the loose-on-the-lead La Verdad a good run for her money while coming from behind in a four-horse field in the Dancin Renee S. downstate July 3, then beat up on allowance company over this course July 30. Willet clearly loves this track--two wins and three seconds in five attempts--and she should get a dream set-up in a race that figures to fall apart late. She’s had mixed results in three prior tries in graded company, but may just be a different animal now. Fellow Empire-bred Hot Stones also interests me at a price. Wager: $50 Win on #5 Willet.
