CIRCLE PIT!” MISS MAY I recently announced details about their new album entitled At Heart, now being released with Rise Records on its new release date of June 12th, 2012. At Heart was produced by famed record producer Machine (Lamb of God, Every Time I Die, Suicide Silence) this past winter at Machine Shop in Belleville, New Jersey. The newly released album artwork was created by graphic artist Zac Schwiet. MISS MAY I is currently on tour with Whitechapel, After The Bruial, The Plot In You, and Structures. The tour will travel through the United States until March 30th, taking a month long break while MISS MAY I heads to Europe to tour with Parkway Drive, The Ghost Inside, and Confession, and kicks back up again on May 3rd in Louisville, KY. The tour closes with two east coast shows, including the 2012 Bamboozle Festival in Asbury Park, NJ. The band’s first album, Apologies Are for the Weak, reached #29 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Their 2010 sophomore release, Monument, charted on the Billboard Top 200 and hit #10 on the U.S. Hard Rock chart. Churning out over 450 performances since 2009, the band is regarded as one of the hardest working young bands in the metal genre. The day before we released Vice Grip we started seeing announcements online about how the single was coming out tomorrow. And we called around to figure out what happened and it was a data intercept in Europe. There was someone waiting on the sidelines for information to come through, and when it did they snagged it. We were like ‘who the fuck is even doing that?’ “We also had someone with a fake email address pretending to be Jia writing to our manager saying, ‘Hey, the .wav files aren’t working on my iPod. Can you send me through the mp3s for the album?’ And this guy only fucked up in using the wrong nickname in the email address, which tipped off our manager.” These kind of things are now a reality in the world of Parkway Drive. It’s not like our personable and charismatic front man is complaining though. “I’d rather people be excited about what we’re doing than not giving a fuck full stop … Oh shit, did I just give you a massive blueprint on how to hack us?” the singer laughs.

A corpus study shows that a particular riff-based version of compound AABA, with a specific style of buildup intro (Aas 2015) and other characteristic features, is normative in mainstream styles of the metal genre. Within this norm, individual artists have their own strategies (Meyer 1989) for manifesting compound AABA form. These strategies afford stylistic distinctions between bands, so that differences in form can be said to signify aesthetic posing or social positioning—a different kind of signification than the programmatic or semantic communication that has been the focus of most existing music theory research in areas like topic theory or musical semiotics. This article concludes with an exploration of how these different formal strategies embody different qualities of physical movement or feelings of motion, arguing that in making stylistic distinctions and identifying with a particular subgenre or style, we imagine that these distinct ways of moving correlate with (sub)genre rhetoric and the physical stances of imagined communities of fans (Anderson 1983, Hill 2016).     Jude the Obscure Official Biography Jude the Obscure, circa 2003 Jude the Obscure had a very comfortable place in the Ontario math-core/noisecore scene throughout its existence. I believe they were the first to be called “chaoticore”. Prior to the forming of this band, Grant Freifeld (“Fuzz” on bass), Jason Rice (“Jaundice” on drums) and Chuck Leach (“the Bank”/”Bankenstein” on guitar) played together in a slew of Grimsby, Ontario high school bands, often changing name every few months. When in 1998 they decided to go “heavier”, they asked a guy in their high school who was wearing a Snapcase shirt if he wanted to to be their signer; that was James Long (“Jimbo”). With Jimbo in, Jude the Obscure was born. The final addition was one of Jason’s coworker, Jordan Passfield who was brought in as an experimental guitar player. “A New Life of Painful Sin” demo, 1999 “A New Life of Painful Sin” demo, 1999 Their first show was a house show with Rise Over Run. In 1999 they recorded 3 songs at Scott Bialik’s small basement studio, soundDOME Studio, in Hamilton, live right off the floor. Jude self-released it as their first demo “A New Life of Painful Sin”. Everyone who ever talks about this demo doesn’t speak of it nicely. Nevertheless it is a good representation of what early 2000 metalcore was like. This year sees the introduction of a new drainage system which totals over 3,000 metres and quadruples the amount in previous years. An additional 1,115 metres of new ditches have also been added to take water away from site.
