FBS Draft Conference Program Note: Zoom links to sessions will be provided to registered guests closer to the conference THURSDAY 30th September 4 – 5.30pm Welcome and opening Keynote Address “Fifty Years with Paul: Some Questions Resolved, Some Yet to be Answered” Address Brendan Byrne SJ Chair: Dorothy Lee Brendan Byrne, SJ, FAHA, after doctoral studies in Oxford (DPhil, 1977) in the area of Pauline theology, taught New Testament for over three decades at United Faculty of Theology, Parkville. A former member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission (Rome: 1990-96), he has published a major commentary on the Letter to the Romans (Sacra Pagina 6; Collegeville: 1996) and more popular works on Paul and all four Gospels. He edited the theological journal Pacifica from 2000-2011. His latest title, Paul and the Economy of Salvation: Reading from the Perspective of the Last Judgment will be released by Baker Academic (US) in mid-August 2021. He is currently preparing A Vocabulary of Paul for Paulist Press. (Cost $59 for 3 courses, not inc. drinks) 3 SATURDAY 2nd October at Pilgrim Theological College, 29 College Crescent, Parkville 9.30am “Reading Intersectionally: Framing the Widow in Genesis 38” Keynote Address: Monica Melanchthon Chair: Rachelle Gilmour Monica was ordained by the Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church, India, in 2009. A graduate of the United Theological College, Bangalore, and the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, she has been teaching Hebrew Bible studies at the Pilgrim Theological College, University of Divinity, since June 2012 after having served on the faculty of the Gurukul Lutheran Theological College, Chennai, for 17 years. Monica positions herself as a feminist advocate and a liberation theologian, committed to producing reflections and texts that resist and counter cultures and languages of dominance that exclude the voices of the oppressed. Her publications focus primarily on interpretations of OT texts from the perspective of the Indian context and the marginalized. Her approach to the Biblical text is critical, contextual, interdisciplinary and liberative. She draws on insights derived from the lived experiences and social biographies of the marginalized, particularly women and dalits to interpret the biblical text. She is an active member of the Society of Biblical Literature and sits on its Council.
