March 2, 2013

Dear Students and Educators:

Welcome to the 45th annual High School Jazz Festival. Your participation makes this the largest festival of its kind in the country, with more than 3,000 students and over 200 ensembles from all over the country and beyond.

Tens of thousands of instrumentalists and vocalists have participat- ed for over four decades, enriching their musical experience and lives. Many of these students have gone on to illustrious careers in the world of music. On behalf of Berklee president Roger H. Brown and the faculty, staff, alumni, and students of the college, we thank you for participating and hope you enjoy this experience.

I hope that you take advantage of the opportunity to hear other student groups perform and attend the performances and informative clinics presented by our active faculty and special guest artists. Please accept this festival as Berklee’s gift to you—the student musicians and dedicated educators who help keep music education alive and thriving. Society benefits greatly from having such an active music community to enrich our cultural and daily experiences. Your strong and enduring commitment to school jazz programs continues to be a source of inspiration to us at Berklee. You are to be congratulated, and we thank you for the work you do.

Use the competition to draw out your best. Share and support the community by attending the performances of the other groups and cheering them on.

Lastly, we express our gratitude to the parents and music department boosters who have pitched in and helped in every imaginable way.

Have a great day of music and have fun.

Sincerely,

Lawrence E. Bethune Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students Festival Executive Director Berklee College of Music Festival Dedication to Phil Wilson Table of Contents

When Wilson formed the band in 1965, it began as one of many classroom ensembles at Berklee, giving students a chance to gain valuable ensemble experience both in arranging and performance. Comprised of students from all over the globe, the band earned a reputation as one of this country’s top college groups performing contemporary jazz, appearing on national television and with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 1985, as the number of international students grew (it is now over 30%), Wilson changed the name to represent all the colors of the rainbow. Prominent Berklee alumni who were members of the band include: ’85, Makoto Ozone ’83, ’66, ’83, ’73, Bill Pierce ’73, Abe Laboriel Jr. ’93 and Abe Laboriel Sr. ’72, Joe Cohn ’90, Richie Cole ’67, Hal Crook ’71, Christopher Hollyday ’96, Tiger Okoshi ’75, Art Barron ’78, ’89, Darren Barrett ’90, George Garzone ’72, Rob Mounsey ’75, Claudio Roditi ’70, and Manhattan Transfer arranger Dennis Wilson ’74.

“Teaching is also like watching your garden blossom. You can actually feel the growth and the realization. Recently, a trombone student in our lesson was having trouble moving around the trombone comfortably at a faster tempo. We were both playing together, and he stopped all of a sudden after playing something that was really magnificent. He looked at me and he said, ‘You know, I think we’ve just had a breakthrough.’ When that happens, it’s thrilling.”—Phil Wilson Festival Schedule of Events Festival Schedule of Events
