Missouri University of Science and Technology became a member of the Great Lakes Valley Con- ference beginning in the 2005-06 academic year as one of three institutions joining the confer- ence in its expansion.

The Great Lakes Valley Conference made its name throughout the last 25 years as a power in NCAA Division II . In the last few years, however, the GLVC has seen success in many sports, and now the league can claim itself as one of the nation's top in all Division II athletics.

The addition of Southern Illinois Edwardsville, Quincy, Wisconsin-Parkside and Missouri-St. Louis in the mid-1990s allowed the GLVC to become an immediate national power in several sports such as men's and women's soccer, women's softball and .

At the start of the 2005-06 season, Missouri S&T, Drury University and Rockhurst University – all of whom have had a good deal of success at the regional and national levels in various sports – have enhanced the league’s reputation at the NCAA Division II level.

Along with its expansion came the hiring of the league's first full-time commissioner in 1996. In 2001, an associate commissioner was also added to the full-time conference staff and the GLVC’s first full-time sports information director was added in the summer of 2006.

The formation of the GLVC can be traced as far back as 1972 when the athletic directors of three member schools - Kentucky Wesleyan, Bel- larmine and Indiana State University at Evansville (now the University of Southern Indiana) - began preliminary discussions about forming a basketball conference. Four years later, the University of Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's College expressed interest. On July 7, 1978, those schools - along with Ashland University - united to become the GLVC.

Since formulation of the conference, seven schools have joined the league: Lewis University (1980), Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne (1984), Northern Kentucky University (1985), Kentucky State University (1989), Quincy University (1994), Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (1994), University of Wisconsin-Parkside (1994) and UM-St. Louis (1995). Ashland and Kentucky State left the conference after the 1994 sea- son. IPFW left the GLVC following the 2000-01 academic year and SIU Edwardsville will leave the conference after the 2007-08 season.

The conference expanded to include women's basketball in 1983-84 and immediately established a women's-men's doubleheader format in league play to ensure maximum exposure for both squads. The GLVC plays its games on Thursday and Saturday nights in November, Decem- ber, January and February.

The GLVC can claim schools in all of the Midwest major media markets, with schools in Milwaukee/Northern Illinois (UW-Parkside), Chicago (Lewis), Indianapolis (Indianapolis), Cincinnati (Northern Kentucky), Louisville (Bellarmine), Evansville (Southern Indiana), Owensboro (Kentucky Wesleyan), and St. Louis (SIU Edwardsville/UM-St. Louis).

The conference sponsors 17 championships in , basketball, cross country, , soccer, indoor and outdoor track and field, and tennis for men and basketball, cross country, softball, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, golf, and for women.

In 2001, the league announced the creation of the GLVC Hall of Fame, with the first class being inducted in 2002.

About Missouri S&T 4

Missouri University of Science and Technology is now in its 137th year as one of the nation’s premier universities for science and technology. But while the university’s reputation has been for the quality of its engineering program, it is quickly becoming a well-rounded institution that now offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in 35 fields.

Missouri S&T is located in a picturesque area of Missouri in the wooded hills of south central Missouri near the Ozarks. The 284-acre campus is located nearly halfway between St. Louis and Springfield, Mo., but within a reasonable drive of a number of state parks, lakes and several of Missouri’s well-known vineyards, not to mention being a short walk away from the downtown area of a town ranked as one of the best 100 small towns in the United States in Norm Crampton’s The 100 Best Small Towns in America.

The campus itself has an enrollment of over 5,500 students, with a student- faculty ratio of 14 to 1. Missouri S&T is one of four campuses that comprise the University of Missouri system. The university, founded as the Missouri School of Mines in 1870 as the first engineering school west of the , has written the book on education in science and engineering and is broadening its scope in the 21st century.

While the university began as a mining school, the university has also prepared its students for leadership roles in engineering, science and liberal arts. Missouri S&T can boast of over 1,000 entrepreneurs among its graduates and hundreds of others in corporate leadership positions.

In addition, the university has broadened its academic scope beyond engineering as it now has programs for its students in business, education (pre-elementary and secondary), English, history and various other pre-professional fields such as pre-law, pre-medicine and pre-nursing as well as speech and media studies. But as far as the engineering fields go, Missouri S&T offers a wide range of options for students to go into. The university offers more than a dozen different engineering programs for its students to study.

A number of Missouri S&T graduates have gone on to have great success. Included among the alumni are Mervin Kelly (1914), whose work on amplifying tubes led to improved long-distance communication; George Mueller (1936), who is credited with being the driving force behind the first lunar landing in 1969; Ted Weise (1967), who formerly served as the president of FedEx; and Gary Forsee (1972), the current president of the University of Missouri system and former chief executive officer of Sprint. In addition, three Missouri S&T graduates have been part of NASA’s space shuttle program: Tom Akers (1973), who was part of the space shuttle team that retrieved a satellite in space in 1992 and is now a member of the faculty at Missouri S&T ; Janet Kavandi (1982) and Sandra Hall Magnus (1986). Mark Mullin As director of athletics, Mullin has overseen a program that won four championships while it was affiliated with the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and had numerous student-athletes win academic honors on both the conference and national levels. In Director of Athletics the past year alone, Missouri S&T had 208 student-athletes post a grade point average of at least 3.0 and 17 of them had grade point averages of 4.0. Two members of the university’s athletics program were recipients the of Ken B. Jones Awards, which was given to the top student-athlete in the MIAA. Since January 2000, Missouri S&T has had 24 Academic All- America selections, which is the fifth-highest total of any school in NCAA Division II. On the field, Missouri S&T had 19 student-athletes earn All-America honors and a total of 38 earn all-conference laurels last year in the Miners’ second season as a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. During the 2006-07 school year, Missouri S&T had teams qualify for the GLVC’s post-season tournaments in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and softball, while the men’s track and field team finished second at both the outdoor conference meets. Missouri S&T’s swimming team posted a fourth place — its 11th finish among the top 10 in the last 12 seasons at the NCAA Division II Championships — while the men’s track team had a 12th place finish at the indoor nationals and the softball team made its first appearance in school history at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional during the 2006-07 season. Under Mullin’s direction, Missouri S&T has hosted the NCAA South Central men's regional basketball tournament and MIAA men's basketball finals in 1996 and the 1999 MIAA cross country championships. He was also involved in the process that allowed the university to move its conference affiliation to the Great Lakes Valley Conference beginning in the fall of 2005. In March, Missouri S&T will serve as the host institution for the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships to be held in Columbia, Mo. Mullin had served in the coaching position for 12 years in addition to his duties as athletics director; he held the dual roles for his final six years as swimming coach. As a coach, the Miners posted a 96-27 dual meet record and won seven regional championships. His final team finished third at the 1998 NCAA Division II Championships, the highest finish ever for a Missouri S&T athletic team at an NCAA championship event. That finish followed an eighth-place performance at the 1997 national meet. Mullin was the chairman of the NCAA Division II men's and women's swimming and diving committee in the 2001-02 season and is again chairing that committee, while having served terms on the men's basketball and football regional advisory committee for the region. He completed a two-year term as the president of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association after spending the two prior years as the conference's vice president prior to UMR’s switch to the GLVC.

Don Kennedy returns for his second season as the head coach of the Lady Miner softball program after guiding Missouri S&T to its Don Kennedy first-ever appearance at the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2007. Head Coach

A strong finish to the season -- with wins in 13 of its last 19 regular season games -- that resulted in third place finishes in both the conference standings and Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, helped land S&T into the Great Lakes Regional in Romeoville, Ill. The Lady Miners then proceeded to win their first game in the tournament over host Lewis University before dropping the next two, the latter being a 13-inning loss to eventual regional runner-up Grand Valley State.

Missouri S&T finished the 2007 season with a record of 29-18, which included marks of 13-9 in GLVC play and a 5-2 mark against nationally ranked team. The Lady Miners swept Lewis when the Flyers were ranked seventh nationally and later split a twinbill over a Southern Illinois Edwardsville team that went on to win the NCAA Division II title. Missouri S&T handed the Cougars their final loss of the season with an 8-0 victory on April 22.

The successful season also helped S&T land its first All-America performers in school history, as second baseman Kandi Wieberg made the Daktronics team as a first-team selection and the NFCA's squad on the second team and outfielder Ashley Winter was named to the NFCA third team. Wieberg was also named as the GLVC's "Player of the Year" and "Student-Athlete of the Year" for the 2007 season and was one of three all-region performers along with Winter and outfielder Emily Tucker.

Kennedy came to Missouri S&T after spending 11 seasons assisting the successful softball team at the University of Central Missouri. A 1993 graduate of UCM with a bachelor's degree in physical education, Kennedy joined the Central staff as a volunteer assistant with the women's basketball program, then started working with the softball team in the 1995 season. He did the bulk of his work with the catchers and outfielders.

During his 11 years at Central, the Jennies posted a record of 369-208 (.640 winning percentage) and four regular season titles in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

Central also won the MIAA Tournament in 1995 and 1997 and went on to a second place finishes in the NCAA regional tournament in each of those years. It also finished second in two other MIAA Tournaments, including the 2004 event where it eliminated S&T in an 18-inning classic to reach the championship game.

Kennedy spent the 2001 season as the head coach at Hutchinson Community College before returning to UCM in 2002, where he assisted Rhesa Sumrell for her final five seasons as head coach before she retired following the 2006 season.

In addition to his coaching duties at Central, Kennedy was also in charge of the daily maintenance of the school's South Recreation complex where UCM's home field was located.

Kennedy, who has several years of experience as a player in men's fastpitch softball, also earned his master's degree at UCM in 1999.

Head Coach: Don Kennedy Assistant Coach: Chad Schatz 2008 Lady Miner Preview 11

Are the Lady Miners up for an encore performance...or better?

Ever since it suffered an extra inning loss to Grand Valley State at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, the Missouri S&T softball team has been itching to get back on the field to try and improve on one of the most productive seasons in the history of the program.

While the Lady Miners return the bulk of their team that finished 29-18 last season and third in the Great Lakes Valley Conference – both in the regular season and tournament – they will try to reach those lofty levels again while going up against perhaps the most challenging schedule a Lady Miner softball team has ever faced.

S&T will face No. 14 Alabama-Huntsville, No. 15 Valdosta State, No. 16 North Georgia and No. 23 Georgia College and State over the course of the opening weekend of the season. The Lady Miners will also play in pre-conference events at Arkansas-Monticello and Missouri Southern, as well as tackle a regional road trip in late March that will take it to Grand Valley State, Wayne State (Mich.) and Ashland.

Oh, and there’s also the GLVC schedule that includes dates with defending NCAA Divi- sion II national champion Southern Illinois Edwardsville and Lewis, a team S&T beat at the regional tournament a year ago. Senior second baseman Kandi Wieberg is coming off a season where she was named as the GLVC “Player But if there’s a Lady Miner team that seems suited to play a challenging slate, it could be of the Year” and a consensus All-America. this one that returns seven position players and its top two pitchers from last season.

Heading up the returning contingent is second baseman Kandi Wieberg, a consensus All-America selection and the GLVC’s “Player of the Year” in 2007. Wieberg is coming off a season where she hit .402 with a team-high 12 home runs and 39 runs batted in out of the leadoff spot in the lineup.

Wieberg, a three-year starter at second base, will have two other returning starters with her on the infield in third baseman Kelsey Musselman (.304, 11 home runs, 31 RBI) and shortstop Rachel Wilkinson (.296, four homers, 29 RBI). Musselman played shortstop last season and Wil- kinson first base, but Wilkinson is moving back to the spot where she played during her first two seasons at S&T.

Several players are competing for the starting role at first base, with the candidates including returners Becky Davis and Ashley Wallingford, as well as newcomers Kristen Drage, Becca Kueny, Kassi Deibert and Janelle Lewis.

The Lady Miners also have one hole to fill in the outfield with the loss of leading hitter Ashley Winter, which will result in returning all-region performer Emily Tucker moving to center this season. Tucker batted .370 a year ago and drove in 33 runs while spending most of the season in right field.

With Tucker in center, S&T figures to have plenty of competition for the other two outfield roles. Returning squadmembers Davis, Krista Porterfield, Allison Plummer and Melissa Ruth will be joined by freshman Katie Smith and Kueny in the quest to earn playing time.

Several of those players could also contend for the designated player spot in the lineup.

At catcher, the Lady Miners return starter Coley Naughton – who started 46 of the team’s 47 games behind the plate as a freshman – with Deibert figuring to see time behind the plate as well.

The Lady Miners went through the 2007 season with just a two-pitcher staff, but has depth at the position now with four players figuring to work from the circle. Jen O’Hara, who earned honorable mention All-GLVC honors last season, finished 19-11 with a 2.76 earned run average last season to head up the staff, while Wallingford won 10 games as a freshman which included a victory over the SIUE team that won the national title.

In addition, Drage, one of the most celebrated pitchers in the history of Kentucky high school softball, also figures to see plenty of time in the circle along with returner Kaye Wibbenmeyer, who missed all of last year while recovering from an injury.
