Star's Advice to Montclair State Grads May 24, 2013 Star’s advice to Montclair State grads: Live with grace, and with feeling S. Epatha Merkerson, a star of the hit television crime show Law & Order, told Montclair State University graduates Friday that she hoped they would embrace life with the joy, grit and curiosity of her mother, who went skydiving last year at the age of 85. The award-winning actress, known for her 16-year role as Lt. Anita Van Buren, said that she watched from the ground last June as her mother jumped from a plane and came spiraling down to earth beneath a parachute. “As she descended,” Merkerson recalled, “the look on her face was pure grace.” Not to be outdone, the 60-year-old actress figured she had better try skydiving, too. When she was falling through the air, she kept telling herself to “Keep your eyes open, don’t miss a thing.” That was her message to the Class of 2013: “Start paying attention and jump out of that plane … That’s what I wish for you, that you end up walking through this life smelling the smells, looking at other cultures, talking to people next to you, making yourself available, listening when someone is offering, and taking it all in with what I saw in my mother’s face. I wish you a life filled with grace.” Merkerson said she was speaking extemporaneously from the heart because she left her speech in her suitcase by mistake, but added “If I get teary, it’s because I’m deep in menopause.” At one point Merkerson, who was granted an honorary doctor of letters degree, asked her mother to stand up in the audience. The crowd roared for this tidy, smiling woman in an elegant silvery- teal suit and high heels. “Here is a woman,” Merkerson said, “who raised five children alone, all college graduates, at a time when people said it was impossible.” The university’s commencement ceremony at the Izod Center in East Rutherford granted degrees to 4,320 graduates, the largest class since the first group of 45 to finish in 1910. Two student speakers carried on this theme of determined black women transcending hurdles. Mame Kani Diop talked of coming to America from a patriarchal home in Senegal, where she was scorned for hoping to get an education. Critics told her that as a mother, her only role was home cooking and caring for her children, and nobody would understand her English anyway. At times she doubted herself, but forged ahead and earned a master’s degree in family and child studies. She also helped provide support for survivors of torture, worked as a counselor in Jersey City and wrote a book called ”Eye on Africa” to dispel misconceptions about its cultures. She plans to pursue a PhD at Montclair State in family studies. The school “taught me I don’t have to wait for my children to fulfill my dreams, because I could achieve them myself,” she said. Racquel E. Foster of Springfield spoke on behalf of undergraduates. A Jamaican immigrant, she quit a full-time job at 41 to finish her bachelor’s degree. She just accepted a job as a news assistant with the Fox 5 broadcasting network in New York. “I’m proof that no matter how long it may take, or what obstacles you may face, you can accomplish any dreams you set for yourself,” she said. May 25, 2013 Montclair State University Graduates, 2013 is Largest Class Ever Montclair State University held its 2013 Commencement exercises at the Izod Center at New Jersey’s Meadowlands Sports Complex on Friday, May 24. In a ceremony presided over by Montclair State President Susan A. Cole, the University conferred 4,320 degrees in science and mathematics, humanities and social sciences, business, the arts and education to baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral degree candidates. The class of 2013, the largest in University history, includes 3,273 undergraduates and 1,047 graduate students. Award-winning actress S. Epatha Merkerson delivered the Commencement address and received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree. Merkerson has received three NAACP Image Awards for her 16-year role as Lieutenant Anita Van Buren on the hit television series Law & Order. She won both Emmy and Golden Globe awards for her work in the 2005 HBO film Lackawanna Blues. After receiving an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University, Merkerson urged the members of the Class of 2013 to “keep your eyes open–don’t miss a thing. You are at a moment of endless possibilities in your life.” In her remarks, Cole said, “the story of today’s Commencement is the realization of the extraordinary growth of Montclair State University over recent years. Today’s 4,320 baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral degree recipients represent a 100 percent increase over the 15 years of my presidency. In and of itself, the size and consistency of this increase is a remarkable achievement for the University and for its superb faculty, but its real importance is in the graduates themselves, well-prepared to exercise leadership, creativity and innovation in the sciences, health professions, business, government, public service, the arts and education.

Mueller* ABSTRACT Plea bargaining is the dominant means of disposing of criminal charges in the United States, in both state and federal courts. This administrative mechanism has become a system that is grossly abusive of individual rights, leading to many well-known maladies of the criminal justice system, which include overcharging, overincarceration, convictions on charges that would likely fail at trial, and even conviction of “factually innocent” persons.

  • Law and Order and the American Criminal Justice System
Law and Order and the American Criminal Justice System By David L. Sutton, Melissa Britts, Margaret Landman Fall 2000 Issue of KINEMA TELEVISION PROGRAMMES AS LEGAL TEXTS: WHAT LAW AND ORDER TELLS US ABOUT THE AMERICAN CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM In this work, we take the perspective that although a television program is produced for the brief amusement of a mass audience, it can be viewed as having a part in the scholarly investigation of law and justice in our society. The central question we are focussing on is: What does Law & Order programme tell its audience about the American criminal justice system? According to one of the program’s official web sites, Law & Order is a ”realistic” television series that examines ”law and order from a dual perspective.” For roughly the first half-hour, the program focuses on two New York Police Department (NYPD) detectives as they ”investigate crimes and apprehend law-breakers.” Then the scene switches to the criminal courts, where two assistant district attorneys ”work within a complicated justice system to prosecute the criminals.”(1) We take the position that a television program can be examined as a legal text. John Denvir posits that films can be studied as legal texts because they share a common feature with the ”normal legaltrilogyof constitutions, codes, and cases.” Like this group of texts, films are also ”cultural artifacts open to warring interpretations both on the descriptive and normative level.”(2) We posit that one can easily make the same point about television programs, another prevalent cultural artifact of our current times.

Lynn Goldsmith, Corbis Media Where Have You Gone, Roseanne Barr? The media rarely portray women as they really are, as everyday breadwinners and caregivers By Susan J. Douglas t’s October 2009, and after a hard day at work—or no day of work since you’ve been laid off—and maybe tending to children or aging parents as well, you click Ion the remote. On any given evening, in fictional television, you will see female police chiefs, surgeons, detectives, district attorneys, partners in law firms and, on “24,” a female president of the United States. Reality TV offers up the privileged “real” housewives of New York, Atlanta, and New Jersey, all of whom devote their time to shopping or taking their daughters to acting coaches. Earlier in the evening, the nightly news programs, and the cable channels as well, feature this odd mix: highly paid and typically very attractive women as reporters (and on CBS, even as the anchor) and, yet, minimal coverage of women and the issues affecting them. Many of us, especially those who grew up with “Leave It to Beaver” and “Father Knows Best,” are delighted to see “The Closer” (Kyra Sedgwick) as an accom- plished boss and crime solver, Dr. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) as the take-no-pris- oners surgeon on “Grey’s Anatomy,” and Shirley Schmidt (Candice Bergen) as a no-nonsense senior partner on reruns of “Boston Legal.” Finally, women at or near the top, holding jobs previously reserved for men, and doing so successfully! But wait. What’s wrong with these fantasy portraits of power? And what are the consequences of
