MARCH 2018 Please Forward All Contributions, Correspondence Etc
MARCH 2018 Please forward all contributions, correspondence etc. to the editor at [email protected] IMPORTANT LETTER TO MEMBERS Members are aware of the drought condition and the effect it has had on the Bowling greens. Whilst every effort has been made to keep the greens open, it has become apparent that continued use is having an effect on them. The Committee has decide on the following playing restrictions. The greens will remain closed on Monday’s and Tuesdays. No play is allowed on the A Green, other than individual practice on Fridays/Saturday morn- ing. No team practice. We may in the future have to curtail more playing time. Ken Morton PAGE 2 GLEN COUNTRY CLUB Now that we are experiencing the effects of the worst drought in Cape Town’s history, what are we going to do about it? We are already buying water to keep our greens growing but the results at this stage are terrible. Are synthetic bowling greens the answer to our problems? There are a great more ques- tions than answers regarding the above quandary. Firstly, if we do invest in one or more synthetic bowling greens, where do we put it/them? Replace the “B” green at Glen Clifton and/or the “B” green at Glen Sea Point? The merits of going synthetic in Glen Sea Point may have advantages in that there are less strong winds than in Clifton. In about 5 years (my thumb suck) the Glen Clifton will be demolished and we will have to move to Glen Sea Point anyway, until the club is rebuilt. -

The Domina General Quickly Caught Hold and Engulfed the Building
FIRE!! This article appears with the kind permission of the Katoomba RSL Club For any business owner or manager, a fire is probably your worst nightmare and for the staff and patrons of Katoomba RSL Club that nightmare came true on the 24th of February. After a member noticed smoke and raised the alarm, the club was quickly evacuated during a busy lunch period with patrons leaving meals on the tables. Assembled outside, they could only watch on in despair as the fire The Domina General quickly caught hold and engulfed the building. NEWSLETTER • APRIL 2017 Despite over nine fire brigades attending, the club could not be saved from a total loss. The club manager rang our office while watching the fire take hold to seek assurance, and guidance during this time. Within a couple of hours the loss adjustor for the insurer had made contact and a professional claims preparer was engaged to act for the club. On the Monday following the fire and after access to the site was permitted, our Claims Manager Alison Hopper and National Account Manager Jenny Gaul inspected the site and were quite overwhelmed by the extent of the damage. The sight of uneaten food sitting on plates in the dining room was a stark reminder of the urgency with which the club was evacuated and how quickly the fire took hold. Lest We Forget “They will not grow old, as we that are left grow old” How will you spend your Anzac Day? Will it be remembering or honouring our servicemen and women at the dawn service, playing two-up with a few beers, watching the footy, Whilst the cause of the fire is not yet known, this is of little consequence to a community left without a popular working or simply having the day off? Whatever you do, as the Last Post and the Reveille social venue and a Sub-Branch having to make alternative sound on Anzac morning, please take the time to remember them. -

Mob: +64 22 697 3560 Email: [email protected] Wales meets Australia to decide the women’s triples championship this morning, while the Aussies face up to NZ’s rampant men’s fours side in the afternoon blockbuster. Ian Watson Bec Van Asch, Natasha Scott and Carla Krizanic already covet gold Ph: +64 21 666 196 from these championships, the women’s fours last Saturday. Email: [email protected] But they will have to earn every shot they score against the experienced Welsh trio of Anwen Butten, Kathy Pearce and Emma Woodcock, who have been headliners on the UK scene for longer than they wish to be reminded. The Welsh trio has made narrow escapes an art form this week, as evidenced against England and then Malaysia yesterday. However, the free-spirited Aussies haven’t had it all their own way either, and were relieved when Elma Davis’ attempted drive on the last end of yesterday’s match against South Africa narrowly missed its target. This will be one almighty struggle - Please enjoy!
