Junior Druids Triumph

Druids Heath Golf Club hold a weekly grassroots introduction, improvement and coaching session led by resident PGA professional Glen Williams. It is well attended by enthusiastic young golfers aged from 5 years old upwards looking to both enjoy and improve their games. This has led to an increase in the number of junior members, who take part in club competitions and represent the club in league matches against other local junior club teams. During May, the juniors played their first match at home against Whittington Heath, despite giving away several inches in stature they triumphed winning 1 ½ to ½, a win that the juniors, the pro and the volunteers who look after the juniors were ecstatic about.

Druids Heath’s junior section has already produced one current Euro Pro Tour player, James Adams, and our current reigning club champion George Clarke. The 18-year-old has a +2.3 handicap, and has spent the last two years on a golf scholarship in the USA. He is currently ranked No 4 in USA college golf, attaining his All-American NJCAA first team status before moving onto the Texas state university to continue his studies.

Druids Heath’s Scratch team have benefitted from George returning home for the summer, and have secured wins in their first two games of the season, defeating Oxley Park and Bloxwich 7 -1 and 5-3 respectively. However, whilst George was achieving a 7th place finish in the Welsh youths open at the Glamorganshire the team went down at an away fixture against .

The League team continued the seasons fixtures with a 2-2 draw away at Moor Hall, a first defeat 4-0 at a very close game against Sutton Coldfield but bouncing back with two wins 3-1 at home to and an excellent away 3-1 victory and Beau Desert. With four matches to play the forthcoming home fixtures against Bloxwich and Sutton Coldfield will play a huge part in determining the final league positions.

Two Major club competitions were played in May, resulting in Anthony Edwards winning the Stan Cresswell Trophy with a nett 69 and Nigel Gleadall taking the Over 50’s cup with the same score. Outside the majors, Jack Smith was the stand out golfer winning two of competitions in the month, seeing his handicap suitably reduced.

The Ancient Druids have continued their friendly interclub matches and remain undefeated. They secured a 3-3 away draw at Wood and defeated Drayton Park 3 ½ to 2 ½. Ian Moore the Ancients Captain is bursting with pride at the performances so far.
