Lazarus was dead for four days already. The Jewish Scripture Reflections for the people believed the soul remained for three days. If Fifth Sunday of Lent someone was dead for four days, they were irretrievably dead. Martha and Mary respond to Jesus’ arrival with annoyance and hope that he could still help. Jesus responds that “he is the resurrection and the life.” When LLIVINGIVING one comes to know Jesus, one is already in some way risen. One’s life is so full and profound that even if one were to die, one would continue to live in him. We do not thethe have to wait until the end of time for our eternal reward, it has already begun here. Jesus is perturbed, deeply troubled and cries at the death of Lazarus. Christian hope WORDWORD at the death of a beloved does not mean that we have to WORD deny our emotions. It means that we express them, but

we also try to maintain hope. Lazarus is not actually

Reflecting On Lent By opening the tomb of Lazarus, Jesus definitively signs his own death sentence: "From that day on they took counsel how to put him to death." (Jn 11:53) The opening of a tomb does indeed signify the proclamation of the end of a life: in this case, that of Jesus; in the previous one, that of the world! But Jesus is not afraid: he is courageous., He provokes a beautiful profession of faith and hope in eternal life from those present. Thus Martha cries out: "Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, he who is coming into the world." (Jn 11:27) This Lent, reflect and give praise to God on the ways that He has lifted you out of past and present hassles, hurts, and heartaches.
