World War II began in Europe on September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland. However, the United States did not officially enter the war until the Japanese launched a surprise attack on its fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. President Franklin D. Roosevelt appeared before Congress and made a speech on December 8, 1941, which began this way:

“Mr. Vice President, Mr. Speaker, members of the Senate and the House of Representatives: Yesterday, December 7th, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.”

The attack on Pearl Harbor damaged or destroyed many of the ships that the United States had there, along with taking many, many lives. Here is a list of just some of the ships that were damaged or destroyed. Find the names of the ships in the word search below.

From 1942 to 1945 wherever the Marines conducted an assault in the Pacific, the Navajo Code Talkers were there with them. They transmitted and received messages by phone and radio with a code that the Japanese, who were expert code breakers, were never able to break. Our code is much easier than theirs, but let’s try decoding names of places in the Pacific Theater where battles took place during World War II.

We are going to write the names of these battles by finding each letter in a graph and then writing the letter on the line. Follow the directions under the line for finding each letter. For example, if the directions say Across 4, Down 3, (A4-D3) you would follow the Down row 3 over to Across column 4 and find the letter e. In the instructions, we will use A for Across and D for Down.

©2015 Bonnie Rose Hudson WriteBonnieRose.com 19 Across All Fronts

This game will help you learn about the major fronts of World War II and what was happening from December 1941 through May 1943.

Preparation: Print the cards on the following five pages. If you wish, you can laminate the pages to keep them from tearing as easily. Cut apart the cards.

The Object of the Game: The object of the game is to form sets of cards using the cards that have a month and year shown in red. (There are six cards with blue dates on them that will be explained later.) Each month and year set includes one card from the Pacific Theater of the war, one card from the North African Theater of the war, and one card from the European theater of the war. You need a set of three to get points. When you get a set of three cards, you lay the set down in front of you. The set of three cards is worth a total of three points.

There are six special cards that have dates written in blue. These cards are not part of any set. When you get a card with a blue date, you can put it down in front of you immediately. Cards with blue dates are worth five points each.

To Play: Shuffle the cards. Give each player four cards. Place the remaining cards in a stack between the players, where all players can reach it. Decide who will be first. The first player either draws a card from the remaining stack or draws a card from the hand of the player on his or her left. If the player can make a set of cards, he or she puts them down. If not, their turn is over and it is the next player’s turn. Play continues in this way until all of the cards in the stack are used. When there are no more cards in the stack, each player has to draw a card from another player. At this point, the player can draw from any other player, not just the one to his or her left. Each player continues to try to make sets until all of the sets have been formed. When the cards have all been played, the points are counted.

Winning the Game: The player who has the most points wins the game. Count three points for each set you have been able to play and five points for each card with a blue date that you have played. The player with the most points wins.

However, they did make a great contribution in the armed forces during the war. Some women served as nurses in the Army Nurse corps. This included working in hospitals that were close to the war front, such as field hospitals, hospital trains and hospital ships, and even helping on transport planes and in evacuation hospitals.

There was a branch of the armed forces that was started in 1942 called the Women’s Army Corps or WAC. Women helped in this branch of the service by serving as mechanics, working in army post offices, and working with communications. More than 150,000 women served in the WAC. A few weeks after D-Day, they even landed in Normandy.

Another area that women served in was the Women’s Air Force Service Pilots or WASPs. These women had pilot’s licenses before the war and flew military planes and cargo planes but did not serve in combat. This did allow more men to be free to fly combat missions.

President Roosevelt to Congress, December 11, 1941

To the Congress:

On the morning of December eleventh, the Government of Germany, pursuing its course of world conquest, declared war against the United States.

The long known and the long expected has thus taken place. The forces endeavoring to enslave the entire world now are moving toward this hemisphere.

Never before has there been a greater challenge to life, liberty, and civilization.

Delay invites greater danger. Rapid and united effort by all of the peoples of the world who are determined to remain free will insure a world victory of the forces of justice and of righteousness over the forces of savagery and of barbarism.

Italy also has declared war against the United States.

I therefore request the Congress to recognize a state of war between the United States and Germany, and between the United States and Italy. ©2015 Bonnie Rose Hudson WriteBonnieRose.com 30 European Theater Timeline
