10 GREAT DAYS, 10 GREAT WINES, 10 GREAT STORIES.

The Calgary Stampede is an extraordinary story - an event that has come to represent a defining part of this great city and its people. At its heart it pays homage to the pioneer days that Calgary was founded upon - the Wild West, frontier lands, stories of hard work, unyielding perseverance, entrepreneurial spirit and western hospitality. Paying tribute to this rich and proud history, while ensuring we embrace this heritage as we write the next chapters of our story, is what we celebrate during these ten incredible days.

To embrace this spirit we have hand-selected ten amazing wines, each with its own story that celebrates similar values held dear to the Calgary Stampede. These wines and winemakers share a deep love for agriculture and farming along with our values of western heritage, uncompromised quality, and environmentally and socially responsible practices. Far better than us telling their stories however, we are honoured to celebrate our 2014 Winemaker Series and the following incredible people who will join us to share the story of their wine with you…

La Crema Chardonnay, Russian River Valley, California 85

The 2011 Russian River Valley chardonnay offers aromas of Bosc pear and ripe nectarine, with subtle hints of nutmeg and tropical floral. On the palate rich impressions of short bread and crème brulee balance zesty notes of Meyer lemon and juicy apple,

Silver Oak , Alexander Valley, California 190

Sustainability is not an ethos recently adopted; its been thier way of life for 40 years. Thier livelihood and the livelihood of future generations depend on the ecological viability of thier land. These earth-friendly practices lead not only to healthier vineyards, but to higher quality grapes and wine. It has a dark, ruby color and a vibrant nose of black cherry, wisteria and sweet baking spices. On the palate, the wine is elegant and expressive and echoes the berry, floral and spice notes from the nose.

Belle Glos Las Arturas, Santa Lucia Highlands, California 115

The Spanish term “Las Alturas” means “the heights”, which is a fitting name for this vineyard because it’s located on one of the highest grape-growing benches within the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. The palate is supple and layered with exotic spices, a rich meatiness, ripe plum, currant and black cherry flavors. The ripe tannins are nicely balanced with acidity, and the finish is long and fulfilling.

Serendipity Syrah, Serendipity Winery, Naramata, British Columbia 125

The Stampede is a time to celebrate great Canadians. Judy Kingston, a winemaker from Okanagan Valley, is one of those worthy of celebrating. Her extraordinary story of overcoming adversity, boldly embracing the entrepreneurial spirit and tirelessly toiling the land has led to this exceptional award winning wine. A well-integrated wine with a long finish. Smokey notes. It goes on to deliver blackberry and darker fruits and finishes with flavours of spicy mochachino.

1885 Shiraz, Peter Lehman, Barossa Valley, Australia 115

The table is a hub for family and friends; business associates and strangers. It is a “situation room”; a forum for discussing music, literature, agriculture, education, tourism, business, anything and everything. The colour is deep, vibrant red leading to a complex bouquet showing dark cherry notes and hints of cracked black pepper. This is a stylish, fruit driven dry red derived from an ancient vineyard planted in 1885.

Cade Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, Cade Estate Winery, Napa Valley, California 232

The first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certified estate winery in Napa Valley. Howell Mountain is known for growing great cabernet. These are wines that are dense, rich and age-worthy but not rustic or tannic. This wine has aromas of red cherries, strawberry, brambles and rose petals. The wine is full bodied with solid structure and tannin and finishes with flavors of cranberry, strawberry jam, allspice, vanilla, clove, coco powder, toasted almonds and chocolate wafers.

Tolaini Valdisanti, Tolaini, Tuscany, Italy 85

Pier Luigi Tolaini's energy and passion for excellence saw him build a transportation and logistics company that ranks among North America's best. But it was to be almost half a century before he returned to his roots to make great wine. The story of Luigi inventing the “Rossetto” - a specially designed tractor used by vineyard laborers to more comfortably harvest grapes is indeed a special one. Valdisanti is a full bodied blend of cabernet sauvignon, sangiovese and cabernet franc with spicy complexity imparted by its time in French oak.

Tate Cabernet Sauvignon, Joan Ellen, St Helena, Napa Valley, California 142

David Tate, a native of British Columbia, is the proprietor and winemaker of TATE. For nearly 20 years, he has worked all over the world in many different facets of premium wine production. As well as hand-crafting TATE wines, David is the winemaker and manager for one of the most renowned boutique wineries in the Napa Valley, Barnett Vineyards, where he has produced multiple vintages of critically acclaimed wines.

Waterstone Reserve, Napa Valley, California 160

Brent Shortridge has extensive hands-on experience in virtually every aspect of the wine industry, from the cellar to the boardroom. With a biochemistry background, Shortridge immersed himself in the wine country community. With its bordeaux-like presence, this wine is deep, rich and lingering. Firm, integrated tannins frame the concentrated, dark fruit of currant, black cherry, wild berry and plum. Toasty oak and an earthy edge add to the wine’s great complexity.

Ravenswood Zinfandel, Lodi, California 75

Dubbed the Godfather of Zinfandel, Joel Peterson is the stylistic trendsetter who has made zinfandel the phenomenon that it is today. This robust and spicy red features aromas of black cherry, raspberry, blueberry, cocoa and a splinter of oak. It has fruit flavours of ripe raspberry, cherry and boysenberry leading to soft tannins and a mouthwatering finish.

THE DUKE’S LIST

Aficionados of the classic western movie know that “The Duke” refers to the one and only John Wayne - considered by many as the icon who defined the on-screen cowboy. That trademark swagger, that grit, that charm, that character voice and grizzled face - he has come to define an entire genre of movies. As we celebrate the story of real life cowboy’s at the Calgary Stampede it seemed only fitting to name our list of most rare and prized wines in his honour.

(…what you might not know however is how John Wayne got his nickname - something he owes to his childhood dog in fact. It was indeed his huge Airedale Terrier that was called Duke, and when a neighbour nicknamed Wayne “Little Duke” in playful reference to his size compared to his big dog, the nickname stuck (well, he did manage to drop the “Little” part later on). And so this list also pays honour to all the big dogs out there that have the good fortune of enjoying one of these extraordinary wines.)
