The Eagles won the Ice Breaker Tournament, the Great Lakes Invitational and the Beanpot, and have now added the RECENT RESULTS regular season trophy to the mantle. Not to be outdone, UNH responded with a 3-2 win at home Saturday to break the Eagles’ 13- Friday, February 27 game undefeated streak. It was the ‘Cats eighth straight win vs. BC at the Whittemore Center. Steve Saviano had two goals and one assist to carry the ‘Cats to victory. UNH remains in a battle at Boston College 4, New Hampshire 2* with idle UMass for the No. 3 seed in the Hockey East tournament. at Northeastern 2, Boston University 2 * Maine locked up the No. 2 seed with a 4-0 whitewash at UMass Lowell on Saturday, the Black at UMass Lowell 3, Maine 2 * Bears’ record ninth shutout of the season. Sophomore goaltender Jim Howard made 20 saves at Providence 5, Merrimack 1 * for Maine and remains the No. 1 goaltender in Hockey East and in the nation with a 1.27 GAA and a .949 save percentage. The victory represented a split for Maine at Lowell as the River Saturday, February 28 Hawks posted their first home win vs. Maine since January of 1990 with Friday’s 3-2 triumph. Goaltender John Yaros stopped 37 of 39 Black Bear shots in the game. at New Hampshire 3, Boston College 2 * Providence will come in at No. 5 (and travel to either UMass or UNH) thanks to a convincing Northeastern 6, at Boston University 3 * 5-1 win at home vs. Merrimack on Friday. The Warriors fought back for a 2-2 tie in Andover on Saturday and at Merrimack 2, Providence 2 (OT)* are still gunning for the No. 6 seed. A victory in their regular season finale at Lowell on Thursday would wrap that up. It was the first-ever win for UMass at BU’s home rink following 18 consecutive losses there. Kelly ECHL Commissioner Emeritus 2008 Inductee ECHL Hall of Fame Patrick J. Kelly was named Commissioner Emeritus of the ECHL in 1996 after serving as Commissioner for the first eight seasons of the ECHL. He was inducted into the inaugural class of the ECHL Hall of Fame in 2008. Kelly celebrated his 59th season in hockey in 2011-12, having begun his career with the St. Catherine Teepees of the Ontario Junior Hockey League in 1952. He played professionally for the Springfield Indians of the American Hockey League, the Trois Riveres Lions in the Quebec League, Troy Bruins of the International Hockey League and the Greensboro Generals of the Eastern Hockey League. He helped Crowland capture the 1948-49 Bantam B Championship of Ontario, beating Peterborough in the finals. He began his coaching career in the Eastern Hockey League, beginning with the Jersey Devils and later with the Clinton (New York) Comets from 1965-73. Clinton was 151-39- 28 and won three straight regular season and postseason titles from 1967-70. In 1967-68, the Comets finished with a 57-5-10 record, making them the only professional team in history to lose only five games or less in a season, and in 1969-70, Kelly was named Minor League Coach of the Year by The Hockey News. Kelly served as head coach and general manager for Charlotte in the Southern Hockey League from 1973-76 guiding the Checkers to a 136-68-12 record, two regular season titles and two postseason titles while earning Coach of the Year honors in the SHL twice.
