Over the chick-rearing period, Macaroni Penguins Eudyptes chrysolophus foraged to the north-east of Heard Island within an approximate 300-km radius, feeding mainly on euphausiids and fish. As the season progressed, the amount of euphausiids in the diet declined by 93% with the diet becoming almost totally composed of the myctophid fish Krefftichthys anderssoni. Penguins foraged mainly on the Heard Island shelf area (seas shallower than 1000 m). Penguin dive profiles were complex, unlike the simple ‘V’ shaped dives recorded elsewhere. Diving was mainly between dawn and dusk to depths of 10–60 m, and the deepest dives were undertaken during daylight hours. The connection between the observed diving patterns and the diet was difficult to elucidate because K. anderssoni only migrates vertically into surface waters at night and is believed to be out of the penguins’ diving range during the day. Aspects of the breeding biology of the Gentoo Penguin Pygoscelis papua were studied at Cierva Point, Antarctic Peninsula (64°09'S, 60°57'W). From a breeding population of 1044 pairs (85% with two eggs), 83% raised at least one chick to fledging. Survival in different subcolonies was neither correlated with perimeter-area ratio nor with distance to the sea. Chick mortality at the end of January 1993 was 23.9%, whereas for the 1991/92 breeding season it was 14.0%; for 1993/94, 23.9%; for 1994/95, 33.0% and for 1995/96 24.3%. By 17 February 1993, chick mortality was 32.3%. Chick survival was regressed against time for nine selected subcolonies, showing a high correlation between them. Covariance analysis among the regression line slopes showed a non-significant result (F = 0.42, P > 0.05). No significant differences were also observed when Tuckey’s multiple contrasts test was performed on the proportions of surviving chicks in-between weeks (P > 0.05), showing a gradual mortality of chicks from egg-laying to créching. -

Williams* Abstract Based on dietary and other biological information collected over several years at Bird Island, South Georgia and at the South Shetland Islands (both within Integrated Study Regions (ISRS) of the CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Program), we suggest (and provide a full bibliography of supporting literature) that the gentoo penguin meets the specified criteria qualifying species for inclusion in the CEMP. The extensive dependence of this species in these ISRs on Euphausia superba, (including in winter), its residence in the ISRs in winter and its early attainment of sexual maturity are all features of special relevance to the CEMP. We examined the degree of sexual size dimorphism of adult birds across the species’ breeding range in the Atlantic Ocean and developed discriminant functions (DF) to predict individuals’ sex using morphometric measurements. We found significant site-specific differences in both bill length and bill depth, with males being the larger sex on each island. Across all islands, bill length contri - buted 78% to dissimilarity between sexes. Penguins on Gough Island had significantly longer bills, whilst those from Tristan da Cunha had the deepest. Island-specific DFs correctly classified 82−94% of individuals, and all functions performed significantly better than chance. -
Conserving Gentoo Penguins Fact Sheet
A fact sheet from Oct 2014 Gentoos construct their nests with small pebbles1 and often will steal them from neighboring nests.2 Conserving Gentoo Penguins Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) can be found swimming, breeding, and foraging in the waters off the Antarctic Peninsula, which juts northward toward South America, and around several sub-Antarctic islands. Although their numbers are stable, human activity could have a major impact on their population health. About gentoo penguins About 387,000 breeding pairs of gentoo penguins inhabit the Antarctic Peninsula, the Falkland/Malvinas Islands, and South Georgia Island.3 They can be as tall as 76 centimeters (about 2.5 feet) and weigh 4.5 to 8.5 kilograms (about 10 to 18 pounds). They are recognizable by their red-orange bills and their feet, which range in color from pink to orange to red. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists gentoo penguins as Near Threatened with extinction. Although some colonies appear to be growing, others are declining quickly, and the impact of human activity may be to blame.4 Did You Know? • Gentoo penguins are mostly monogamous during their breeding season.5 • The gentoo diet includes a mix of crustaceans and fish. Nature-based tourism: experiences at the Volunteer Point penguin colony in the Falkland Islands. Marine Ornithology 33: 181–187. A study was conducted of nature-based tourism, including visitor numbers and use of six visitor attractions, at Volunteer Point, the site of the largest King Penguin Aptenodytes patagonicus colony in the Falkland Islands, from November 2001 to March 2002. Of the 1070 visitors to Volunteer Point, 57% were overseas tourists, 24% were local residents of the islands and 19% were from the British military base, suggesting that Volunteer Point is one of the key land-based sites in the archipelago. Overseas tourists generally stayed for more than three hours at Volunteer Point; island residents and military personnel remained for less than two hours. All visitors spent time at the King Penguin colony, with a mean visit duration of 63 minutes, as compared to the Gentoo Penguin Pygoscelis papua colony, with 50% of visitors and a mean duration of only 19 minutes. The penguin colonies at Volunteer Point received less visitor exposure in terms of visitor person–hours than did a penguin colony on the Antarctic Peninsula. Volunteer Beach was the second most popular attraction at Volunteer Point. The popularity of non-wildlife attractions highlights the need for visitor management to incorporate the entire site and not just wildlife colonies. -
Avian Predation at Penguin Colonies on King George Island, Antarctica

EMSLIE, ’ NINA KARNOVSKY,~ AND WAYNE TRIVELPIECE* ABSTRACT.-Predation at seven colonies that varied in size from 10 to hundreds of breed- ing pairs of Adelie (Pygoscelis adeliae) and Gentoo (P. papua) penguins was observed from a blind at King George Island, Antarctic Peninsula, from 21 Dec. 1993 to 3 Feb. 1994. We observed the colonies for 96 h to record foraging by Brown Skuas (Catharacta lonnbergi), Kelp Gulls (Larus dominicanus), and Giant Petrels (Macronectes giganteus) during the early chick through creche phase of the penguin breeding cycle. Activity rates by predators varied little with time of day or time of season for skuas and petrels. Kelp Gulls, however, showed significant variation in rates with time of season. Total activity and search rates were sig- nificantly higher for each predator species at larger versus smaller colonies. In addition, attempted predation and predation by skuas on penguin chicks were significantly higher, and from 4.1-7.9~ more frequent, at colony edges rather than the center. Larger colonies probably receive greater attention by predators because of the larger number of prey, and by their greater circumference and edge area. Low breeding success by penguins in small colonies appeared to be partially attributed to predation losses, although predation rates were low. Penguin reproductive success may be significantly influenced by colony size and by the number and kinds of predators attending them. Received 8 Sept. 1994, accepted 15 Nov. 1994. Predation at breeding colonies has received a great deal of attention by ornithologists interested in the evolution and adaptive significance of co- loniality (e.g., Wittenberger and Hunt 1985, Kharitonov and Siegel-Cau- sey 1988).
