SENATOR JOHN KELLY

Senator John Kelly was born and brought up in Rath, Ballintubber and has lived and worked in Ballaghaderreen for over 24 years. He attended Scoil Bride's National School Ballintubber and CBS Roscommon.

John is the son of Mary and of the late Kevin Kelly. He is married to Brid, who teaches in the Community School in Castlerea, and they have three children, Amy, Darragh and Ronan.

Having worked as the Community Welfare Officer in the Ballaghaderreen and Castlerea area for 24 years, John is deeply rooted in the local community and is acutely aware of the needs of local families.

As a longstanding community activist, John contested the 2007 general election, and topped the poll in the 2009 local elections. John was elected to Seanad Eireann in 2011 where he has campaigned on services for rural Ireland.

John has always been actively involved in fundraising for local and national organisations and has personally raised over €70,000 for the Irish Wheelchair Association.

An avid Roscommon GAA supporter, John has played both football and hurling for Oran GAA. He has also played soccer with Ballintubber and is a strong supporter of local sporting clubs across Roscommon.
