This study used back-calculated curve numbers (CNs) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to develop NDVI-based CNs (CNNDV) using four small northeastern Kansas grassland watersheds with average areas of 1 km2 and twelve years (2001–2012) of daily precipitation and runoff data. Analysis indicated that the CNNDVI model improved runoff predictions compared to the SCS-CN method. The CNNDVI also showed greater variability in CNs, especially during growing season, thereby increasing the model’s ability to estimate relatively accurate runoff from rainfall events since most rainfall occurs during the growing season. The CNNDVI model was applied to small, disturbed grassland watersheds to assess the model’s ability to detect land cover change impact for military maneuver damage and large, diverse land use/cover watersheds to assess the impact of scaling up the model. CNNDVI application was assessed using a paired watershed study at Fort Riley, Kansas. Paired watersheds were identified through k-means and hierarchical-agglomerative clustering techniques. At the large watershed scale, Daymet precipitation was used to estimate runoff, which was compared to direct runoff extracted from stream flow at gauging points for Chapman (grassland dominated) and Upper Delaware (agriculture dominated) watersheds. In large, diverse watersheds, CNNDVI performed better in moderate and overall flow years. Overall, CNNDVI more accurately simulated runoff compared to SCS-CN results: The calibrated model increased by 0.91 for every unit increase in observed flow (r = 0.83), while standard CN-based flow increased by 0.506 for every unit increase in observed flow (r = 0.404). Therefore, CNNDVI could help identify land use/cover changes and disturbances and spatiotemporal changes in runoff at various scales. CNNDVI could also be used to accurately estimate runoff from precipitation events in order to instigate more timely land management decisions. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations.     Introduction Mircea Pitici In the fourth annual volume of The Best Writing on Mathematics series, we present once again a collection of recent articles on various aspects re- lated to mathematics. With few exceptions, these pieces were published in 2012. The relevant literature I surveyed to compile the selection is vast and spread over many publishing venues; strict limitation to the time frame offered by the calendar is not only unrealistic but also undesirable. I thought up this series for the first time about nine years ago. Quite by chance, in a fancy, and convinced that such a series existed, I asked in a bookstore for the latest volume of The Best Writing on Mathematics. To my puzzlement, I learned that the book I wanted did not exist—and the remote idea that I might do it one day was born timidly in my mind, only to be overwhelmed, over the ensuing few years, by unusual ad- versity, hardship, and misadventures. But when the right opportunity appeared, I was prepared for it; the result is in your hands. Mathematicians are mavericks—inventors and explorers of sorts; they create new things and discover novel ways of looking at old things; they believe things hard to believe, and question what seems to be obvi- ous. Mathematicians also disrupt patterns of entrenched thinking; their work concerns vast streams of physical and mental phenomena from which they pick the proportions that make up a customized blend of ab- stractions, glued by tight reasoning and augmented with clues glanced from the natural universe. This amalgam differs from one mathemati- cian to another; it is “purer” or “less pure,” depending on how little or how much “application” it contains; it is also changeable, flexible, and adaptable, reflecting (or reacting to) the social intercourse of ideas that influences each of us.

Approach Previous approaches for Detailed Watershed Plan (DWP) SCS curve number generation are the “Calumet-Sag Watershed SCS Curve Number Generation” technical memorandum a authored by CH2M Hill (dated August 14, 2007 and herein referred to as the “CH2M Hill Memo”) and “Comments on CH2MHill Curve Numbers” b email authored by CTE (dated September 14, 2007 and herein referred to as the “CTE email”). HDR will incorporate these approaches, with the following changes or refinements: o The use of an additional Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) soil survey for the City of Chicago; o Analysis of the affects of minor soil types; o Review and revisions of land use information; o Use of existing remote sensing datasets to estimate impervious areas; o GIS dataset preparation. 2. NRCS Soil Survey The CH2M Hill Memo noted that NRCS soils datasets covered portions of the watersheds but did not include the City of Chicago. In place of this, the CH2M Hill Memo recommended assuming a uniform hydrologic soil group (HSG) of “C”, representing moderately high runoff potential soils. The NRCS provides two types of soil datasets for the area. One type is the Soil Survey Geographic, or SSURGO, dataset c. The SSURGO dataset is available for select areas and is a detailed soil survey. The City of Chicago is not included in the SSURGO dataset, although portions of the North Branch upper basin are included.
