Opinion and Please read this... By Geof Skinner Commentary Health department promotes awareness about lead poisoning Lead poisoning is too much lead in the body. Southern Seven Health Department notes that of the 1 million chil- dren ages 6 years and younger in Illinois, approximately 100,000 have blood levels that are too high. Even the smallest amount of lead can harm a child’s brain, kidneys, and stomach, as well as slow development and cause learning and behavior problems. Oct. 20-26 is National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week. In an effort to protect children against lead poison- ing, Southern Seven Health Department is encouraging parents and caregivers to take all necessary precautions to prevent lead poisoning, and to share the message with other families during October. The health department advises that all children 6 months to 6 years should be assessed for their risk of lead poison- ing, especially if they live in or regularly visit a home built before 1978 with peeling or chipping paint. Local Southern Seven Health Department offices can do this simple blood test. If too much lead is found in the blood, the child may need treatment. The health department says that women who are plan- ning to have a baby should also be tested for lead. The upcoming forums will allow community members to attend presentations with local and nationally recog- nized experts from various fields of conservation. The first session is set for 6 p.m. on Oct. 22 on Shawnee Community College’s main campus near Ullin. The program is titled “An Overview Of Deer Disease and How To Report Them.” The program is scheduled to be presented by Southern Illinois district wildlife biologist Adam Phillips. The speaker plans to discuss chronic wasting disease and epizootic hemorrhagic disease, the symptoms and epidemiology of both diseases, how to report sick or dying deer and steps which can be taken to help biologists gain more local information about the diseases.
