Furthermore, the research questions in this topic have started to change because also the fields of religiosity are changing, becoming more diverse and pluralistic. To address the new topics in health research, one may rely on standardized questionnaires. Several of these new questions cannot be easily answered with the instruments designed for previous questions and thus, new instruments need to be constantly developed. There is a growing number of instruments intended to measure specific aspects of spirituality and they are difficult to value particularly the new ones. This special issue intends to focus on some of the already established instruments (and to update the knowledge or adaptation to different languages and cultures) and describe the features and intentions of newly developed instruments, which may be potentially used in larger studies to obtain knowledge that is relevant to spiritual care and practice. Some of these are rather ‘inclusive’ (also embracing secular concepts of spirituality and may thus be less specific) and others are rather ‘exclusive’ (or specific for circumscribed religious groups and thus, not suited for varying denominations or non-religious persons). This issue should become a resource of relevant instruments in the wide range of organized religiosity, the individual experience of the divine and the open approach in the search for meaning and purpose in life. In this review, we aim to identify and evaluate measures assessing factors relating to spirituality and religiosity in clinical settings. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE and PsycINFO databases with search terms relating to spirituality, religiosity that also included well-being, needs, distress and beliefs used in self-reporting and clinician-administered measures. Only articles relating to the validation and subsequent administration of measures used in clinical settings were eligible for review. Results: Of 75 measures selected for initial screening, 25 had been validated and used in clinical settings and were reviewed for this study. Most measures were validated in oncological and palliative care settings where the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy Spiritual Well-being (FACIT-Sp12) and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Spiritual, Religious and Personal Beliefs (WHOQOL-SRPB) were most validated and frequently used. To explore this question, I study the relationship between income and happiness and I analyze the effect religiosity has on this relationship. I propose that income will have a bigger impact on the happiness of those who are non- or less religious compared to those who are very religious. The very religious believe that tough times are tests and they believe that God will, in due season, bless them too. This helps them stay happy and hopeful, even if they are not living in the best conditions. I use the General Social Survey, face-to-face interviews with adults (18 years and older) living in U.S.

    Ethics, Gesture and the Western

    PERFORMANCE PHILOSOPHY ETHICS, GESTURE AND THE WESTERN MICHAEL MINDEN JESUS COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE Hollywood Western films constitute one of the truly unmistakeable genres in the era of cinema. This reality of genre, and the expectations and effects that it enables in real people, demand to be taken seriously when one thinks about how cultures of performance and fiction relate to the challenge to think creatively about ethics. However, the commercial and formulaic nature of the products of Hollywood seem to represent a kind of medial discourse quite antithetical to serious ethical reflection. Giorgio Agamben is in my view exemplary in the creativity of his thinking about ethics. As part of this engagement he is deeply interested in what he calls the ethics of gesture in performance and film. I would like, in what follows, to think about the Western, despite its origins in the sphere of commodities, within an Agambenian framework. At the same time my intention is to exploit the genre’s accessibility with a view to probing and clarifying Agamben’s sometimes tangled elucubrations. Drawing on David Foster Wallace’s reflections on genre structures in his novel Infinite Jest, my conclusion will be that alongside an ethics of gesture, we should also be thinking about an ethics of genre when we reflect upon a possible ethical life today. The Hollywood Western: An Unlikely Place for an Ethics of Gesture? Agamben takes the position that western society of the twentieth century ‘lost its gestures’ in the sense that pathological forms of the loss of bodily control, ‘ataxia, tics, and dystonia’, became the norm, and thus invisible and forgotten (2000, 51).

Received: 11 May 2020; Accepted: 27 July 2020; Published: 8 August 2020 Abstract: Although the positive relationship between religion and happiness has aroused heated debate, empirical studies on this are limited in the Chinese cultural context. Furthermore, there is a lack of heterogeneity analysis concerning this influence. This paper aims to address this gap in the existing literature. Using the Chinese General Social Survey data from 2015 for empirical analysis, the results show that people with religious beliefs have an increased probability of feeling very happy. This positive association does not exist in urban and eastern groups, but it still holds up in other remaining sub-samples (i.e., rural group). This study further finds that the effect of religiosity on happiness varies by different religious identification. Muslims are more likely to feel very happy compared with non-Muslims, but people of the Christian faith do not rate themselves higher on the happiness scale than non-Christians. Moreover, the results also reveal that religious involvement is significantly and positively related to happiness. Specifically, vulnerable groups are more likely to perceive themselves to be happier from continuous religious participation, whereas advantaged groups do not.

Isolation is something of the past. A growing number of communities are linked to a widening network and exposed to influences far outside their traditional range. Homogeneous communities are becoming the exception and plural communities the rule. Our world is changing into one huge plural society. This plurality applies to all levels of existence, such as religious affiliation, race and culture, social and economic status and even world view. Plurality also implies connectedness.
