POLO Golf Met PGA Head Pro Championship Presented by Club Car at Willow Ridge Country Club The 2017 POLO Golf Met PGA Head Pro Championship presented by Club Car was another outstanding event. James Ondo of Apawamis caught Fresh Meadow’s Matt Dobyns to capture his first major section title. The senior division needed extra holes to determine a champion as Glen Head’s Scott Hawkins charged back with a final round 68 to tie Craig Thomas of Metropolis. Thomas’ 6- foot birdie putt on the first hole of sudden death dropped, giving him his second consecutive win on the section’s senior circuit.

The 18-hole Life Member Championship was taken Charlie Bolling with one under par 70. Polo’s involvement as title sponsor not only bolsters the prize purse, but also continues a longstanding relationship between the Met PGA head professionals and the Polo Ralph Lauren brand.

MasterCard Match Play Championships end with a Repeat and Threepeat The last players standing at the MasterCard Long Island and Westchester PGA Championships have won 5 of the last 6 combined iterations of the respective events, totaling 30 consecutive matches! GlenArbor director of golf Rob Labritz won his third straight Westchester PGA in a back and forth match with Quaker Ridge head professional Brian Gaffney. Anthony Aruta of North Shore took advantage of a slow start by Tam O’Shanter head pro Mark Brown to build a lead in the final match of his title defense. The MasterCard Senior Match play at Engineers was another case of the usual suspects with the four semifinalists owning a combined six titles and innumerable semifinal appearances. Craig Thomas of Metropolis emerged after beating Sleepy Hollow’s David Young, defending champion, in the semis. Thomas faced Deepdale’s Darrell Kestner in the final match after Darrell topped Bill Van Orman of Meadow Brook in the other semifinal.

Met PGA Travel Pro Am Returns to Pinehurst on Oct. 29th - Nov. 1st We are excited to return to Pinehurst Resort for our annual Met PGA Travel Pro-Am. Pinehurst has been home away from home for the Met PGA, and we look forward to checking out a number of improvements since our last visit. For starters, we will be some of the first guests to have access to the newly built short course. Pinehurst has also taken advantage of the formerly unused patio space adjacent to the 18th green on Course #2 with a new pub called The Deuce. The event includes one practice round and three tournament rounds on Pinehurst #6, #8 and #2 (two rounds). Please check with Dan Kiley if you have questions or for a link to share with your amateurs to submit payment. At minimum, a $1000 deposit per amateur is required to reserve your spot. We are excited that National Car Rental will also be our sponsor again this year, allowing us to include rental cars as part of the package.

PGA Senior Championship Everyone in the Met area watched closely as Tam O’Shanter head professional Mark Brown and Craig Thomas of Metropolis CC teed it up in the Senior PGA Championship at Trump National GC – Washington DC. Both players played well, but Thomas’ putter wasn’t working quite as well as it was earlier in the month. Brown made the cut and narrowly missed earning low club professional honors. After rounds of 74-71-73-73, Brown was T-53 and said “It was tons of fun. Playing with some of these guys that I grew up idolizing and then to play with some of them was kind of cool.” “Then, to make the cut was really kind of cool. To try and go for the Low Club Professional was really nice, too, but my putter just let me down all week.” Brown saw his chances to catch Estes end when he bogeyed No. 16, and had to struggle for a closing par. “I couldn't make anything. I couldn't read the greens right,” said Brown, who will attempt to qualify for the U.S. Senior Open next week. “My speed was pretty good, just didn't make anything all week.”

Met PGA Foundation Fundraisers Getting Started Once again in 2017 we are asking our assistant professionals as well as all of our PGA Members to assist with the important task of raising dollars to support the efforts of our Foundation. With over 110 junior tour events, our commitment to The First Tee, the Met PGA HOPE program, and other player development initiatives, it is easy to understand why your help and support are so necessary.

Over the years, many assistants have also mentioned that selling raffle tickets and running a fund-raiser is tough for them to do. That is why we instituted several years ago our policy that any assistant who raises over $1,000 will get entry into the Assistants Championship top tier automatically and they can give raffle tickets to their fund-raiser supporters. If you would like some help with an event for your club, contact our office or any of the Assistants Board.

Drive, Chip, and Putt The Metropolitan Section will be hosting and administering six local qualifiers, the sub-regional qualifier, and the regional final qualifier in 2017. The PGA of America has created a Drive, Chip and Putt Instruction Playbook to help PGA Professionals leverage the successful Drive, Chip and Putt Championship to develop and retain new youth golfers at their facility and leverage the popularity of the event to drive new revenue to the facility and its professionals.

With the increase in exposure and marketing of the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship, especially the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals which are annually televised by Golf Channel the Sunday before the , PGA Professionals have the ability to capitalize on the Drive, Chip and Putt brand. Specifically, PGA Professionals can be uniquely positioned as coaches to the thousands of youth golfers participating in local qualifiers across all 41 PGA Sections and 50 states. This Playbook will aid you in the creation and implementation of youth clinics with a Drive, Chip and Putt twist. The following ideas and concepts can be modified to fit your golf facility with the ultimate goals of increasing youth activity at your facility, creating revenue for your instruction business and driving awareness of the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship. More Information.
