PREFACE AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
This publication announces the availability of the International Demographic Data Directory (IDDD). The 1DDD is designed to expedite the retrieval of demographic and family planning statistics for use by administrators, planners, and researchers concerned with this vital field.
This booklet was prepared in the International Statistical Programs Center by Martha Barger under the general supervision of Samuel Baum, Assistant Chief For Demographic Research, and Carlingford Gray, Chief of the Data Systems Branch. The assistance of Leo Solomon, Ellen Jamison, and Rockwell Livingston at various stages during the preparation of this publication is gratefully acknowledged. The computer programming for the IDDD system was done by Mary Kay Friday and Phil Heinrich,. The Country Name List is adapted from the United Nations Country Code List. Editorial assistance was provided by Helen Bonkoski of the Publications Services Division.
The International Demographic..Data Directory was developed and is operated under a participating agency service agreement with the Office of Population, Bureau for Population and Humanitarian Assistance, Agency forInternational Development, Dr. R. T. Ravenholt, Director, and Carl Hemmer, Project Manager. International Demographic Data Directory
I. Introduction
The International Demographic Data Directory isa computerized bibliography of demographic and family planning data supplemented, where practicable, by the data themselves. Approximately 1,000 tables are currently referenced, and about 2,500more will be added annually.
The retrieval system associated with thisDirectory enables the user to obtain references rapidly, either throughdirect use of his own remote console, or through the submission ofrequests to the Bureau of the Census, International StatisticalPrograms Center.
II. Data and Source References
A. Scope of the Data
The system covers information for the world, major areas of the world, component regions, countries, major subdivisionsof countries such as states or provinces, the urban and rural partsof these areas and, where data are available, metropolitanareas, cities, towns, and villages. Primarily, emphasis has been placedon information relating to the countries of Africa, Asia, and LatinAmerica There are, however, two exceptions: data from the United Nations, whichcover all countries of the world, and data fromrecent census reports as they become available fromany country in tha world. See Appendix I for a list of major areas, regions, andcountries.
Subject coverage of the system includesinformation on such demographic data as population characteristics and vitalstatistics; also included are statistics on family planning program activities, healthprograms, education, and demographicrelated economiccharacteristics. A list of subjects is provided in Appendix II.
Information on two types of data is included: primary data and adjusted data. Primary data are acquired from suchsources as census reports, vital statistics publications; and UnitedNations documents. The adjusted data referenced in the systemare also from a variety of sources. A major source is the International StatisticalPrograms Center of the Bureau of the Census, which isengaged in evaluating and adjusting demographic data.Working papers and publications prepared in I.S.P. provide adjusted demographicdata as well as projections of populations.Other sources of adjusted data include
1 publications of the United Nations, articles from journals, and conferences reports on population and family planning.
B. Major Sources of Information
Selected sources are screened on a regular basis for specific data.
Census reports
Information on all characteristics of the population selected from both preliminary and final census reports are entered into the system. These tables vary from the most common subject of age and sex distributions to more specialized subjects such as economic status cross-classified by educational level. In addition, a limited number of tables on household subjects are included. Most frequently, these relate to number and size of households, usually distributed by type of household.
Sample Surveys
Sample surveys are often the only source for supplying data on population characteristics of a country when a census report is not available. The subject content of such surveys frequently includes familiar census-type information.Special sample surveys, however, also supply certain types of information which are not usually collected in a population census, such as vital events, movement of the population into and out of areas, number of married women with knowledge about contraceptives, number of women who practice birth control and the method they use.
Official statistical publications
Vital statistics are available in monthly, quarterly, and annual official publications of national governments. From these sources, references to current data on births, deaths, marriages, divorces, and migration are selected for inclusion in the system. Some official publications provide data on public health statis- tics which include, among other subjects, the number of hospital facilities, personnel, cases of abortions, rural health clinics, dispensaries, and deaths by cause.
United Nations
Every table contained in the Demographic Yearbooks is referenced in the IDDD. In addition, reference is made to unpublished
2 data contained on basic questionnaires collected bythe U.N. directly from national statistical offices. The subject content of the U.N. tables is broad. Included are all subjects normally covered in a comprehensive populationcensus as well as data on vital statistics. Some other U.N. publications screened and selectively referenced in the system include theMonthly Bulletin of Statistics, Working Papers ofthe Population Division, Population and Vital Statistics Report, and Compendiumof Social Statistics.
Family planning programs
Some countries with organized national familyplanning programs publish monthly, quarterly, or annual reportson the progress of their programs. Included are data on acceptors according to the method of birth control used, facility andpersonnel data, number and location of clinics, number of midwives, family planning goals, and budget data.
Some unpublished data on family planningactivities are acquired from newsletters and airgrams sent by AIDMission officers or from reports sent by Census BAreauoverseas consultants. Population Council publications are anothersource of information; demographic data and family planning statisticsare selectively referenced from its Country Profiles series,Studies in Family Planning, published monthly, and the Reportson Population/Family Planning series.
The International Planned Parenthood Federation'spublication, Situation Report, provides population profiles andreports on the activities of IPPF affiliates and thefamily planning situation in IPPF-affiliated countries.
Population and family planning conferencepapers are frequently a source for references to special and detailed data.
Other sources
Professional journals are screened for data whichhave been adjusted according to sound methodologicalprocedures.
The International Statistical Programs Center'sinternal working papers and publications provide adjusteddemographic
3 data and projections of populations. These data relate to measures of fertility and mortality, and to projections of the population using different assumptions about future changes in fertility and mortality. One ongoing project called "Country Demographic Profiles" has its data stored on the computer independently from the IDDD, and is retrievable through the IDDD query or through Country Profile query. The subject content of the Profiles includes information on total population, age and sex distribution of the population, number of births, deaths, natural increase, annual growth rate, sex ratio at birth, married females, migration by age and sex, urban population, school enroll- ment, labor force participation, agricultural land density, as well as several fertility and mortality measures.
Another source for unpublished data tabulated by I.S.P. is the "Age-Parity Grid System". Based primarily on the Demographic Yearbook, tables in the Grid report births by age of mother and parity, median age, "excess" births by age group, and "excess" births by parity group. The Grid System includes all countries of the world for which age-specific data are available. A publication series of I.S.P. is "Demographic Reports for Foreign Countries": these reports are published irregularly. The main tables of data appearing in the series are projections of the population by sex and single years of age through age 29 and by five-year age groups thereafter. Coverage is from the year of the latest census to around the year 2000. Also presented are the number of births and deaths which underlie these projections.
C. Output from the Directory
Information contained in the IDDD is produced as a printout on remote computer terminals. The information on the printout is of two types: the actual data themselves and the reference to the availability of the data. About one-third of all entries provide data, while the remaining two-thirds are references to tables containing the desired information. For both types the printout provides:
(1) the title of the table of data as it appears in the source;
(2) a description of the data; this includes such notations as quality of the data and extent of coverage;
(3) a citation of the source and, in some cases, how to acquire the data. See Appendix III' for a sample printout from the IDDD.
if In addition to the printout, theuser may request that the data contained in the referenced table, whether storedin the computer or not, be recorded on punch cards in the format hespecifies. A fee will be charged to cover the costof the card punching.
III. Using the Directory
There are two ways to acquire informationfrom the system: (1) by independent access through the remote terminal, and (2) through the intermediary, the Bureau of the Census.
Independent access is possible tousers who have remote terminals and are COMNET Corporation customers. (Computer Network Corp. isa private, Washington, D.C. time-sharing corporation.) The confidential nature of some of the Bureau of the Census' dataproscribes direct outside access to its computer facilities.
Alternate access may be made by mailingrequests to:
International Demographic Data Directory International Statistical Programs Center Bureau of the Census Washington, D.C. 20233
- or by telephoning:
International Statistical Programs Center Marlow Heights, Maryland 301-763-2870
For mail and phone requests requiringa significant amount of effort, such service will be provided at cost. Users will be sent a cost estimate for approval prior to the processing of suchrequests.
A set of instructions anda Subject Code List are available upon request, and should be reviewed before finalinquiries are made.

Item 5:Make one subject statement to describe the variables which you want to be cross tabulated within a single table. Example:If you want to know the number of family planning acceptors according to birth control methods used for urban and rural areas, then this would constitute one subject statement and search for only tables with all of the named variables cross tabulated. However, if you want to know the number of family planning acceptors according to birth control methods used, and the number of family planning acceptors by urban and rural areas, then two statements are required and separate forms should be used for each.
If your request is limited to a single cell table, such as crude birth rates, or crude death rates, you may consult the list of Subject Names, Appendix II. and enter the subject names here.In this case, simply write in "crude birth rates" or "crude death rates."
Item 6: More than one country name may be listed if the same cross tabulation is desired for each country.
Item 7: You may be specific or broad. Example: 1950, 1960 and 1970, 1955 1965, "any years available", or "latest year available."
