Liberty Slovenia SARAJEVO, ONE OF MUST-SEE PLACES IN 2014

Balkan has been relatively unknown for many travelers before 20 years, but these days it is very popular. One day everybody is writing about Montenegro, the other day everybody recommends Croatia, then again Slovenia, Serbia,... But for National Geographic one of must see places in 2014 is Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Often called the “European Jerusalem,” Sarajevo sits at a historic crossroads between East and West, where four major religions – Islam, Judaism, and both Latin and Eastern Rite Catholicism – all meet. All four have stamped their visual legacy on the city. Despite being so multicultural, Sarajevo is one of Europe’s safest capitals.

Though Sarajevo has survived three devastating wars, people are still extremely kind and the city retains its intoxicating charisma. The bazaar smells of the coffee cooked in copper pots (for Sarajevans, drinking coffee is a ritual for relaxing, not quickening the pulse), silversmiths and rug merchants offer their products in the tidy workshops, chic women click- clack down cobbled streets, street food shops sell ubiquitous pitas (stuffed, coiled phyllo dough pies) and cevapcici (beef sausages)... Cafes, restaurants, boutiques and theaters have sprouted among buildings in myriad styles, including Ottoman, Secessionist, Communist and modern. And tourists and locals alike are rediscovering the surrounding mountains of Dinaric Alps.

2014 is the 100th anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Gavrilo Princip, the spark from Sarajevo that lit the fuse of World War One, and it will also be 30 years since the 1984 Winter Olympics, the high point in the city's modern history.

It is truly worth to visit Sarajevo. Do not miss it.
