GAME RECAP – C OF I 68, CONCORDIA 50: Nicole Gall led four College of Idaho players in double figures with 12 points, as the Lady Yotes opened up CCC Tournament play with a 68-50 quarterfinal victory over Concordia University last Tuesday night. The Cavaliers kept the game close for the first ten minutes, pulling within 21-20 on a Sarah Eischen jumper. However, the Lady Yotes would hold CU to just two field goals the rest of the period – forcing ten of the Cavs 29 turnovers during an 18-4 run, as Gall hit a trey at the final horn to send C of I to the locker room with a 39-24 lead. The Coyotes would see the margin cut to 50-40 on a Megan Padilla lay-up with 12:14 remaining, but a Katelin Shannon trey started a 8-0 C of I run that put the game out of reach. Gall added seven assists, six rebounds, and six steals in the victory for the Lady Yotes, who improve to 10-1 all-time at home during the postseason. Katie Strunk had ten points and nine rebounds, Nicole Bruce had ten points, seven rebounds, and four blocks, and Brette Rubie scored ten in the win. Danielle Clauson led CU with 16 points, with Eischen adding ten off the bench.

GAME RECAP – C OF I 75, SOUTHERN OREGON 57: A 31-4 run spanning both halves proved to be the difference for The C of I, as the Lady Yotes advanced to their third-straight CCC Tournament championship game, defeating Southern Oregon, 75-57, on Friday night. Clinging to a 26-25 lead, the Coyotes got a three-point play from Katie Strunk, a Whitney Owen free throw, and a pair of freebies from Nicole Gall, to push the lead to seven at the break. The hosts would force eight turnovers in the first eight minutes of the second half, holding the Raiders to 1-of-12 shooting during the stretch. Gall would score 16 points during the run, including a trio of triples, as the Yotes led 57-29 with 11:44 remaining. SOU would go on a foul spree the final five minutes, trying to get back in the game – getting within 15 on a Carly Wood three in the final two minutes, but could not get closer. Gall led The C of I with 23 points, including 4-of-6 shooting from outside the arc, with Brette Rubie adding ten points and eight boards. Twin sisters Katee Brewer and Kayla Isham had big nights for the Coyotes, with Brewer scoring ten points and four steals, with Isham adding seven points and three rebounds. GAME RECAP - C OF I 70, EASTERN OREGON 67: Whitney Owen scored a game-high 21 points, going 6-of-6 from the foul line in the final two minutes, helping The C of I to their first-ever CCC Tournament championship, defeating Eastern Oregon, 70-67, Monday night. After the Mountaineers used a 7-0 run, capped by an Alyssa Garro trey, to take a 44-43 lead early in the second half, The C of I used a 12-2 run of their own to take their biggest lead of the night at 55-46 with eight minutes left. EOU would not quit, scoring the next ten points, with a Garro triple giving the Mounties their final lead at 56-55 with 5:28 remaining. Meghan Hughes would give the Yotes the lead for good with a driving lay-up, with a pair of Owen freebies pushing the margin to 65-58. EOU would close within three on a Kelsea Hurliman trey inside the final 30-seconds, but get no closer. Owen was 6-for-9 from the field and hit all nine free throws in the win, with Hughes coming off the bench to score 11. Nicole Bruce added ten points and six rebounds, with Nicole Gall scoring nine points, with five assists and four steals. Eastern hit 15-of-18 free throws, but were plagued by 26 turnovers.

ABOUT THE COACH: Reagan Rossi is in her ninth season as head coach of the Lady Yotes. During her career at The C of I, the native of Mukwonago, Wis., has compiled a 166-108 overall record, with nine consecutive appearances in the CCC Tournament, and back-to-back CCC championships. Last season, she led the Coyotes to a school record 29-5 season, winning their first CCC title since 2001 - earning a berth to the NAIA Division II National Tournament. The team set a new school record with 21 consecutive wins, highest scoring average, and defeated Weber State for their first-ever NCAA Division I victory. In her first season with the Lady Yotes, Rossi took a team that had one returning starter and only four players with extensive collegiate experience, and brought the Lady Yotes to within one game of the NAIA national tournament. In 2004-05, she led a team which had just two players with considerable experience with the Coyotes, won 20 games, and dropped the CCC Tournament title game to Western Baptist, 60-57. In 2007-08,, she led the team to a third-place finish in the CCC, advancing to the CCC title game, losing in overtime at Southern Oregon. Rossi was no stranger to The C of I, as she was a member of Todd Corman's inaugural coaching staff for two seasons, and was on the bench when the Lady Yotes took to the floor for the first time on Nov. 4, 1995 against Carroll College, ending an 18-year hiatus of women's basketball at the school. Rossi has an extensive background in coaching - having been an assistant coach at Georgetown (Ky.), a fellow NAIA institution, along with Morehead State (Ky.), an NCAA Division I program. Before coming to The C of I in 1995, Rossi was an assistant coach with the Skagway High School boys' varsity team in Skagway, Alaska. A 1994 graduate of Saint Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, Rossi played four years of basketball for the Queen Bees. Two of her teams qualified for the NAIA National Tournament, including the 1993-94 squad which advanced into the "Sweet Sixteen." She was the starting point-guard for two seasons, averaging ten points and six assists per game during her senior season. In 2006, she was inducted into the Mukwonago High School Hall of Fame. She and husband Rudy live in Caldwell - and have five-year-old twin daughters, Maggie and Darby.

GAME RECAP – C OF I 11, WHITWORTH 2, C OF I 3, WHITWORTH 2: The C of I swept the first two games of a three-game series with Whitworth on Saturday, winning 11-2 and 3-2 at Wolfe Field. In the opener, Ben Rosen tossed six innings of two-hit ball and the Yotes took advantage of five errors by the Pirates to earn the victory. A first inning error by the Bucs prolonged the frame, with Izaac Garsez (Caldwell, Idaho / Caldwell HS) roping a two-run single and Jye Lanphere (Spokane, Wash. / Wenatchee Valley CC) adding an RBI knock to make it 3-0. A Whitworth error in the fourth allowed another run to score, with Lanphere blowing the game open with a three-run homer in the fifth to make it 7-0. Jesse Dodd (Eagle, Idaho / Loyola Marymount U.) capped the scoring for the Yotes with a bases-clearing triple in the sixth. The Pirates averted the shutout in the seventh, as Marlowe Peter ripped a two-run double. Lanphere and Dan Harrington (Boise, Idaho / Treasure Valley CC) each had three hits for the Coyotes, while J.R. Jarrell had two hits for the Bucs. Game 2 was a pitchers' duel throughout - as the Pirates got to C of I starter Jacob Coats (Twin Falls, Idaho / Twin Falls HS) in the third on a Landon Scott RBI single. The Yotes would come right back, and Brett Dvorak (Lake Stevens, Wash. / Bellevue CC) scored on a Brett Ward (Nampa, Idaho / Nampa HS) fielders' choice to tie the score, but the Bucs threw out the go-ahead run at home plate after a Lanphere single. An inning later, John Rausch reached on a two-out walk, stole second, and scored on a Nathan Johnson single, making it 2-1. It would stay that way to the seventh, when Rosen led off the inning with an infield single. Garsez, the pinch runner, moved to third on a pinch hit single from Jordan Lanman (La Grande, Ore. / La Grande HS). After Lanman stole second, Ray Santiago (Ventura, Calif. / Oxnard CC) lifted a sacrifice fly to right, tying the game, with Lanman taking third. Jared Arehart followed with a walk-off single through the left side, giving the Yotes the sweep. Levi Mitchum (Yakima, Wash. / Yakima Valley CC), making his Yotes debut, pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the win, while Coats went six innings of four-hit ball, working around two walks and four hit batters, in a no decision. Liam O'Brien kept the Coyotes off-balance, allowing just five hits through six innings, striking out five, before the tumultuous seventh.

GAME RECAP – C OF I 11, WHITWORTH 5: Jared Arehart went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, helping The C of I run their win streak to nine with a 11-5 victory over Whitworth, Sunday at Wolfe Field. The C of I started quickly, as RBI ground outs by Diego Robles and Jarel Lewis in the opening frame made it 2-0. After the Pirates cut the lead in half in the third on a Coyote throwing error, the Coyotes would take advantage of a throwing error on an Arehart bunt single to plate two. Trailing 6-1, Whitworth made it interesting, getting a two-run Dan Belet double and a Greg Hata sacrifice fly in the sixth to cut the margin to 6-4, then put runners at second and third with no outs in the eighth. However, Coyote reliever Jesse Vermillion (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallivue HS) struck out three batters to get out of the jam unscathed. The Yotes would put it away in the bottom of the frame, scoring five runs – taking advantage of an error and a dropped third strike. Chad Yeggy (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) notched his second win of the year, going six innings of five-hit ball. Lewis and Robles each added two RBI in the win. Belet and Kyle Krustangel each had two hits for the Bucs.

GAME RECAP – LEWIS -CLARK STATE 16, C OF I 8: The C of I hit three home runs in the first three innings, but could not hold leads of 5-1 and 6-5, as Lewis-Clark State rallied for ten runs in the final two frames to stop the Yotes, 16-8, Monday at Harris Field. Diego Robles got the Yotes on the board in the opening inning, belting a three-run homer, while Izaac Garsez added a solo shot an inning later, to make it 4-0. After L-C got an unearned run in the bottom of the frame, Robles added his second homer of the game, to make it 5-1 in the third. However, the Warriors would get two in the third and fourth innings to tie the score. In the fifth, Kyle Douglas (Post Falls, Idaho / Lewis-Clark State) gave The C of I the lead back, roping an RBI triple with two outs, but a Brian Gaylord solo homer in the sixth inning tied the score at 6-6. L-C would bust the game open in the seventh, as a Josh Ashenbrenner RBI double made it 7-6, with a Gaylord three-run homer pushing the lead to 11-6. Brian Burke added a three-run homer of his own in the eighth, helping L-C make it 16-6, before the Yotes tacked on two runs in the ninth to cap the scoring. Robles went 3-for-5 with five RBI, with Ray Santiago and Garsez each recording two hits. Bobby Wassmann (Puyallup, Wash. / Pierce CC) allowed just three earned runs through six innings, but was saddled with the loss. Gaylord went 3-for-3 with six RBI and Burke 2-for-5 with five RBI in the win for L-C.

GAME RECAP – LEWIS-CLARK STATE 7, C OF I 6: Leading 6-2 with six outs to go, The C of I bullpen served up four walks, a hit-by-pitch, and an error in the late innings, helping No. 7 Lewis-Clark State rally for a 7-6 victory Tuesday at Harris Field. Brian Burke started a four-run eighth inning rally by the Warriors with a solo homer off reliever Levi Mitchum, who had retired five of the six men he had faced to that point. Brian Gaylord would double and Jake Eccles would walk to chase Mitchum. Kawika Emsley-Pai would great Izaac Garsez with a single to load the bases. An error would make it 6-4, with a bases-loaded walk and hit-by-pitch tying the score. In the ninth, Gaylord doubled into right center, Eccles would single, and Emsley-Pai walked to load the bases with no outs. Ben Rodwell (Nampa, Idaho / Skyview HS) came in from the pen, but could not find the strike zone, as Gino Cassini walked on four pitches to end the game. Ray Santiago got the Coyotes on the board in the first with a two-out RBI single, but L-C got solo homers from Travis Georgius and Todd Muecklisch in the third to take a 2-1 lead. The Yotes would respond in the fourth, as a Tyler Andazola two-run single gave the C of I the lead, adding a run on one of four Warrior errors. The Yotes would push the lead to 6-2 in the seventh, thanks to a pair of L-C errors. Jarel Lewis went 4-for-5 for the Coyotes, with Santiago, Kyle Douglas, and Brett Ward each recording two hits. Mitch Dame was solid in his two innings of middle relief, retiring six of the seven men he faced, while starter Brett Dvorak allowed just three hits in three innings of work.

GAME RECAP – IDAHO STATE 10, C OF I 1, IDAHO STATE 11, C OF I 3: Brittany Olsin went 5-for-7 with six RBI, helping Idaho State to a doubleheader sweep at The C of I, winning 10-1 and 11-3, Sunday at Symms Field. The NCAA Division I Bengals used a pair of big first innings to jump to early leads, as ISU ended a four game losing streak. In Game 1, ISU took full advantage of a two-out error by the Coyotes in the opening frame, as Jessica Baca roped a two-run homer – then added a third run on a second C of I error to grab the 3-0 lead. They would add a Megan Miller two-run single in the second, with Olsin doubling in a run in the third to make it 6-0 – as the Bengals cruised to the win. The late game saw the Bengals get a two-run singles from Erin Olander and Courtney Darby in the first to grab a 4 -0 lead, but the Lady Yotes responded, as Jody Zillner (Emmett, Idaho / College of Southern Idaho) clubbed a long solo homer in the bottom of the frame. Olsin pushed the lead to 7-1 with a two-run double in the third, then smashed a three-run homer in the fifth to make it 10-2. The C of I averted a mercy-rule shortened game, as Hannah Johnson hit a lead-off homer in the fifth. Kandis Clesson picked up the win in both games for ISU, striking out 11 batters in nine combined innings of work. Desirae Hoffman, Taylor Marchione, Miller, and Baca all had three hits in the sweep for the Bengals. Kalie Kurdy (Boise, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) had three hits and Johnson added two hits in Game 2 for the Lady Yotes, while four different players notched singles in the opener for The C of I.

NEXT YEAR: The Yotes will definitely have a new look next season, as just two starters – Steve Peres (Palos Verdes, Calif. / El Camino CC) and Matt Ballenger, and just one other contributor – freshman Miguel Rodriguez (Wilder, Idaho / Wilder HS).
