April 25, 2011 Issue 240 Breakin’ Detroit Down If you had to pick the major market U.S. city least likely to have a Country station ranked No. 1, Detroit might be it. With its significant (25%) ethnic population, a rough-and-tumble image and challenging economic times, the metro would seem more attuned to News/Talk, escaping to Tim Roberts Oldies or to the city’s beloved sports franchises. Nonetheless, for two consecutive months now, the market’s top-rated station has been CBS Radio’s WYCD. After sitting A Race Car Named Inspire: Mike Curb celebrates his 500th alone at No. 1 in February, ‘YCD now shares the top spot NASCAR start at Friday’s Bully Hill Vinyards 200 at the Nashville with News/Talk sister WWJ. The just-released March PPM Superspeedway (4/22). Curb’s No. 13 Safe Auto/Curb Records punctuated Country’s Motor City mojo, with ‘YCD’s 5.7 (6+) Chevrolet Team ran in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and its fourth straight cume increase, which in March topped event as industry friends and race fans watched. Pictured (l-r) are 900,000. Making ‘YCD’s accomplishment more impressive CA’s Brad Helton, Dr. Jon Roebuck, CA’s Lon Helton, Curb’s Adrian is that since the advent of PPM on a national level, it’s been Michaels, driver Johnny Sauter, Mike Curb, Rodney Atkins and uncommon for Country stations to reach No. 1 and difficult for Sirius XM’s John Marks those that do to sustain the position for more than one month.
