However, phylogenetic studies of island plants frequently illustrate a decoupling of molecular divergence and ecological/morphological diversity, resulting in phylogenies lacking the resolution required to interpret patterns of evolution in a phylogenetic context. The current study uses the primarily Macaronesian fl owering plant genus Tolpis to illustrate the utility of multiplexed shotgun genotyping (MSG) for resolving relationships at relatively deep (among archipelagos) and very shallow (within archipelagos) nodes in this small, yet diverse insular plant lineage that had not been resolved with other molecular markers. -

Leonardo Paz Deble A tribo Gnaphalieae é composta de 180-190 gêneros e cerca de 1.240 espécies, com distribuição quase cosmopolita, com maior diversidade na África do Sul, Ásia, Austrália e América do Sul (BAYER et al., 2007; DILLON; SAGASTEGUI, 1991; WARD et al., 2009). Para a América do Sul, Dillon e Sagastegui (1991) reconheceram 2 centros de diversidade: a Cordilheira dos Andes e o Sudeste do Brasil e regiões adjacentes. Tradicionalmente, Gnaphalieae foi subordinada à tribo Inuleae, sen- do reconhecida como um dos grupos de mais difícil identificação dentro da família, dadas a homogeneidade dos caracteres vegetativos e a escassa variação dos caracteres florais (CABRERA, 1961). Estudos recentes demons- traram que as Gnaphalieae encerram grupo monofilético posicionado na base da subfamília Asteroideae (ANDERBERG, 2009; ANDERBERG et al., 2005; FUNK et al., 2005). -

Here, we make available a dataset from phytosociological surveys carried out in the Itacolomi State Park, Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. All species in a total of 30 plots of 10 x 10 m from two study sites were sampled. Their cardinality, a combination of cover and abundance, was estimated. Altogether, we registered occurrences from 161 different taxa from 114 genera and 47 families. The families with the most species were Poaceae and Asteraceae, followed by Cyperaceae. Abiotic descriptions, including soil properties such as type, acidity, nutrient or aluminum availability, cation exchange capacity, and saturation of bases, as well as the percentage of rocky outcrops and the mean inclination for each plot, are given. This dataset provides unique insights into the campo rupestre vegetation, its specific environment and the distribution of its diversity. -

Accepted 11 May, 2012 Medicinal plants are considered to be the most hopeful way for cancer treatment. The Cichorium endivia, L. plant materials were collected from Tanuma, Saudi Arabia. Methanol extraction for the phenolic compounds was carried out and the HPLC analysis showed that, the extract containing four main compounds with different concentrations. The anticancer activity of the root extract was examined on breast cancer cell line MFC7 compared with the anticancer 5 FU (5-fluorouracil). Cytotoxicity of the root extract against the MFC7 line was 401ug/mL but it was 0.67 ug/mL with the 5 FU. The gene expression for the DNA cancer markers; P53, Bcl2, TNF and interleukin IL-4, IL-6 and IL-2 were examined using real time PCR. The expression of the P53 and TNF was high both in cells treated with FU and root extract. Expression of Bcl2 was high in the cell line treated with root extract compared with the FU, yet this expression still was low compared with the control ones. The expression level of IL-2, IL-4 decreased in the examined cell lines treated with both root extract and with 5FU as well. -

Pseudognaphalium Kirp. is one of the many segregated genera from Gnaphalium which have been proposed to obtain subgroups that are better defi ned and presumably monophyletic. Although most Mexican species of Gnaphalium s.l. have been transferred to Pseudognaphalium, the combinations so far proposed do not include a few Mexican taxa that truly belong in Pseudognaphalium. In this paper, the differences between Gnaphalium s.s. and Pseudognaphalium are briefl y addressed, and the transfer of two Mexican species and three varieties from Gnaphalium to Pseudognaphalium are presented. Pseudognaphalium Kirp. es uno de varios géneros segregados, a partir de Gnaphalium, que se han propuesto para obtener subgrupos mejor defi nidos y presumiblemente monofi léticos. La mayoría de las especies mexicanas de Gnaphalium s.l. han sido transferidas al género Pseudognaphalium; sin embargo, las combinaciones propuestas hasta el momento no cubren algunos taxones mexicanos que pertenecen a Pseudogna- phalium. En este trabajo se explican brevemente las diferencias entre Gnaphalium s.s. y Pseudognaphalium, y se presentan las transferencias de dos especies y tres variedades mexicanas de Gnaphalium a Pseudognaphalium. The New World is one of the centers of diversity of the tribe with 24 genera and over 100 species, most of which form a clade called the Luciliagroup with 21 genera. However, the generic classification of the Luciliagroup has been controversial with no agreement on delimitation or circumscription of genera. Especially controversial has been the taxonomic value of achenial trichomes and molecular studies have shown equivocal results so far. The major aims of this paper are to provide a nearly complete phylogeny of the Lucilia group at generic level and to discuss the evolutionary trends and taxonomic significance of achenial trichome morphology. -

Data on 1,477 Syrphid occurrences and floral associations from three years of pollinator collection (2017-2019) in the Southern Illinois region of Illinois, United States, are here compiled and analyzed. We collected 69 species in 36 genera off of the flowers of 157 plant species. While a richness of 69 species is greater than most other families of flower-visiting insects in our region, a species accumulation curve and regional species pool estimators suggest that at least 33 species are yet uncollected. -

Abstract:There is a great interest in the production of biologically active substances from plant origin in today's world. Since chicory roots serve as the major source of valuable secondary metabolites, the aim of this study was to develop an efficient protocol for the in vitro root culture of chicory. Medium supplemented with 0.5mg/l NAA and 1mg/l IBA was found to respond maximum with 91% (leaf), 76% (hypocotyl) and 94% (root) for root induction. The maximum biomass accumulation obtained from leaf, hypocotyl and root derived adventitious culture (4.098g, 3.163g and 4.500g respectively) was obtained on the medium contained 0.5mg/l NAA and 0.8mg/l IBA. While a significant increase in rooting response percentage was recorded for leaf (17%), hypocotyl (15%) and root (8%) cultured on half-strength MS medium compared to that cultured on full-strength MS medium, there was no significant differences recorded for the accumulation of root biomass. There was stimulatory effect of total dark condition on root induction and production in all types of explants. A maximum amount of fresh root biomass (9fold) was produced 6 weeks after culture. Moreover, further analysis showed that inulin obtained from our protocol is closely similar to that obtained from open field cultivation in terms of quality and quantity. -

We start this year having seen From the Editor 1 enormously encouraging progress in 2013. Our different regions have started from BBSG Executive Committee 2 very different positions, in terms of established knowledge of their bee faunas Regional Coordinators 2 as well as in terms of resources available, but members in all regions are actively moving forward. In Europe and North America, which have been fortunate to Bumblebee Specialist have the most specialists over the last century, we are achieving the first species Group Report 2013 3 assessments. Mesoamerica and South America are also very close, despite the huge Bumblebees in the News 9 areas to survey and the much less well known species. In Asia, with far more species, many of them poorly known, remarkably rapid progress is being made in sorting Research 13 out what is present and in building the crucial keys and distribution maps.
