  • Three Conquests of Canaan
ÅA Wars in the Middle East are almost an every day part of Eero Junkkaala:of Three Canaan Conquests our lives, and undeniably the history of war in this area is very long indeed. This study examines three such wars, all of which were directed against the Land of Canaan. Two campaigns were conducted by Egyptian Pharaohs and one by the Israelites. The question considered being Eero Junkkaala whether or not these wars really took place. This study gives one methodological viewpoint to answer this ques- tion. The author studies the archaeology of all the geo- Three Conquests of Canaan graphical sites mentioned in the lists of Thutmosis III and A Comparative Study of Two Egyptian Military Campaigns and Shishak and compares them with the cities mentioned in Joshua 10-12 in the Light of Recent Archaeological Evidence the Conquest stories in the Book of Joshua. Altogether 116 sites were studied, and the com- parison between the texts and the archaeological results offered a possibility of establishing whether the cities mentioned, in the sources in question, were inhabited, and, furthermore, might have been destroyed during the time of the Pharaohs and the biblical settlement pe- riod. Despite the nature of the two written sources being so very different it was possible to make a comparative study. This study gives a fresh view on the fierce discus- sion concerning the emergence of the Israelites. It also challenges both Egyptological and biblical studies to use the written texts and the archaeological material togeth- er so that they are not so separated from each other, as is often the case.

The Lebanese Ministry of Environment wishes to maintain the natural grandeur of the region, even during the massive renewal that is occurring as a result of the end of their civil war. In order to understand the interconnectivity between the river and the groundwater a groundwater-surface water interaction study was completed. This study utilized a groundwater flow model and a mass balance analysis to determine where the river is losing and gaining.

  • Uncontested Physical Features
National Physical Master Plan of the Lebanese Territory Final Report I UNCONTESTED PHYSICAL FEATURES _____________________________________________________________________ DAR - IAURIF December 2005 L0215-RPT-13 REV 0 National Physical Master Plan of the Lebanese Territory I – Uncontested Physical Features Final Report CHAPTER I UNCONTESTED PHYSICAL FEATURES The basic choices adopted in the National Physical Master Plan of the Lebanese Territories (NPMPLT) are the result of a coherent analysis of two imperatives: − Physical data (constraints and advantages) that characterize the Lebanese territory; and − Challenges of the future, in terms of economic and social perspectives. The present chapter explains the imperatives followed by physical features. I.1 THE SIZE OF LEBANON AND ITS GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION The first unavoidable feature or reality of Lebanon is its small surface area. With less than 11000 km2, it is the second smallest country in the Middle East and the Arab World (after Bahrain). Its territory represents 1 / 1000th that of large countries such as the USA or Canada and 1 / 100th that of Egypt. Despite the fact that it is densely populated1, it is ranked 125th worldwide for its populations, with four million inhabitants2. Its well-known and exploited natural resources consist practically of water resources, soil and vegetation, as well as climate and landscapes. The small size of the country, its population density and the modesty of its natural resources generate a series of perennial consequences, the most important being the vital necessity for Lebanon to be open to the whole world in order to import resources and consumption goods on one hand, and export goods and services, on the other.

  • Taxonomy and Ecology of the Lebanese Species of the Genus Hydraena KUGELANN, with Descriptions of Four New Species (Coleoptera: Hydraenidae)
©Wiener Coleopterologenverein (WCV), download unter www.biologiezentrum.at Koleopterologische Rundschau 76 97–134 Wien, Juli 2006 Taxonomy and ecology of the Lebanese species of the genus Hydraena KUGELANN, with descriptions of four new species (Coleoptera: Hydraenidae) M.A. JÄCH,A.DIA &J.A.DÍAZ Abstract Four new species of Hydraena s.str. KUGELANN are described from Lebanon: Hydraena (s.str.) berthelemyana, H. (s.str.) orthosia, H. (s.str.) phoenicia, and H. (s.str.) sidon. Ecological and distributional data of all nine Lebanese Hydraena species are summarized. All species are keyed. The male and female genitalia are illustrated. Key words: Coleoptera, Hydraenidae, Hydraena, new species, Lebanon. Introduction Since almost 30 years, the second author, A. Dia, has been co-ordinating comprehensive hydro- biological surveys in Lebanon. In the course of these surveys four new species of Hydraena KUGELANN were discovered, which are described herein. The large number of specimens sampled provided an opportunity to study the ecology and distribution of the Lebanese species of the genus Hydraena. Ecological and distributional data of all nine Lebanese Hydraena species are summarized. All species are keyed. The male and female genitalia are illustrated. Material and methods About 1100 adults of Hydraena from Lebanon were studied. The majority of these specimens were sampled by the second author in more than 10 coastal river systems along the western slope of Mt. Lebanon. In addition to the material sampled by the second author, we have examined all historical specimens (types of H. berytus JÄCH and H. furthi JÄCH) and a few specimens which were collected by R.

  • The Lebanon Mountains
The Lebanon Mountains Qalaat Faqra: Tower and Altars By Niels Bargfeldt 2 Beit Mary, Deir el-Qalaa By Mariana Bodnaruk 7 1 Agora nr. 8 2011 Qalaat Faqra: Tower and Altars By Niels Bargfeldt Looking out over the valleys, a trio of Photo: Niels Bargfeldt monuments stands out at the north ridge at Qalaat Faqra. Most often they are la- beled as “The tower”, “The (big) altar” and “The colonnaded monument (or small altar)” (fig. 1). The latter two are heavily restored while the tower still stands as it was when travelers of the 19 th and early 20 th century visited the site. The vantage point on the ridge gives the trio a magnificent view of the maze- like rock-formation behind the well- Fig. 1: The three monuments on the ridge. preserved Zeus Beelgalasos temple in the sanctuary (fig. 2). Below this temple there is a second smaller temple, later turned into a basilica (fig. 3). The colonnaded monument is situated a bit lower in the landscape than the other two, and it is the southernmost of the three. The monument stands today 3.2 m high and was first reconstructed in 1943 (fig. 4). The square base is 0.6 m high, and on this rests a solid core surrounded by a peristyle with four columns facing each of the four directions. The top of the monument consists of a cornice crowned Photo: Niels Bargfeldt Photo: Niels Bargfeldt Fig. 2: The large temple and surrounding temenos built up Fig. 3: The smaller temple seen from the larger temple.
