Star Architects, Urban Spectacles and Global Brands: Exploring the Case of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 Abstract Olympic stadia are often regarded as a political showcase involving a range of influences: the host nation’s international politics, the interests of transnational capitalism along with site-specific meanings and the power of iconic architecture. By examining the 2020 Tokyo Olympic main stadium as a case study, the paper analyzes the controversial Zaha Hadid’ stadium plan in relation to the Japanese nation branding initiative. In doing so, the paper argues that ‘branding’ should be seen as part of an economic and cultural system which seems to enhance the global value of iconic architects and their buildings. Yet, the power of brands can be understood as a contingent entity. This is because its ambivalenct nature entails a tension between exclusiveness and banality; additionally, it could be difficult for branded architects to work across the different regimes of global and local politics; and they are of course also constrained by the logic of neoliberal transnational capitalism. By investigating a major global branded architect, Zaha Hadid and her architecture plan, the paper considers why a new image of Japan could not be adequately created by Hadid’s aesthetics and narratives of the Olympic stadium which should be regarded as a national cultural legacy. The paper then discusses the contested processes of image-making and narrative creation in relation to the representation of Japan in contemporary Olympic culture. The paper concludes with an examination of Kengo Kuma’s architecture language in his 2020 Tokyo Olympics stadium design. -

Safeco Field Seattle, Washington n 1995, Seattle’s profes- sionalI baseball team, the Mariners, decided they wanted a new stadium. Across the country, great baseball venues were being created, echoing the early days of old-style stadiums, fresh grass fields, and the great outdoors. After 21 years of playing in the fully enclosed Kingdome, the Mariners, too, wanted out in the sun, both for the joy of playing outside and the financial boost it would bring the team. But Seattle’s rainy climate dic- tated that the stadium be equipped with an “umbrella” to shield fans on days of inclement weather. And, thus, the demand was made: Build us a new stadi- um, open to the sky, with real grass, but make sure we can cover the field and the fans when it rains. Plus, do it by opening day 1999. With those ground rules, the design team set to work. The result is Safeco Field, a 47,000 seat, state-of-the-art, retractable roof ballpark. This one-of-a-kind project offers a landmark public amenity that will keep major league baseball in the region for years to come. It pro- vides good family entertainment, while stimulating economic growth and redevelopment in the area. Proactive management and innovative design solutions were required to meet the aggressive Modern Steel Construction / March 2000 project schedule and design chal- lenges. The retractable roof was designed for speedy erection and to minimize the impact on the construction of the seating bowl. The close proximity to the Seattle Fault required special seismic considerations, such as the use of an innovative viscous damping system in the roof that reduces the seismic forces by 50%. -

GEORGIA DOME FACTS, FIGURES AND RECORDS ‐ The Georgia Dome is the only venue to host the Olympics, Super Bowl and NCAA men’s basketball Final Four. ‐ The Georgia Dome had two general managers in its quarter century run: Khalil Johnson served as general manager from 1989 (during the construction phase) to 2002 when he was named Chief Operating Officer of the Georgia World Congress Center Authority; and Carl Adkins was promoted from assistant manager to general manager in 2002, staying in this role until 2016. ‐ More than 1,400 events took place at the Georgia Dome, drawing 37 million guests and generating more than $7 billion in economic impact. ‐ The grand opening of the Georgia Dome included the stadium’s first official public event entitled “Roam the Dome” held Aug. 14-16, 1992 featuring marching bands, parades and non-athletic competitions, drawing more than 230,000 visitors. ‐ The weekend after “Roam the Dome,” the Atlanta Falcons began the team’s 25-year residency at the Georgia Dome with an exhibition game victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Aug. 23, 1992 in front of 66,464 fans. ‐ The Georgia Dome’s first concert was the Olympic Flag jam on Sept. 17, 1992, featuring performances by multiple acts, including Whitney Houston, James Brown, Travis Tritt, Santana, TLC, Trisha Yearwood, Lee Greenwood, Alabama, Atlanta Rhythm Section and Gladys Knight. ‐ The first headlining concert at the dome was U2’s Zoo TV Tour, which stopped over on Sept. 25, 1992, drawing a crowd of 52,318. This kind of facility provides protection from weather for spectators, a natural grass playing surface for players, and new sources of revenue for owners. The first retractable-roof stadium in North America, the Rogers Centre, has hosted numerous successful events but cost the city of Toronto over CA$500 million. Today, there are five retractable-roof stadia in use in America. Each has very different structural features designed to accommodate the conditions under which they are placed, and their individual costs reflect the sophistication of these features. -

CARDWELL* The 1990s was a decade in which new sports facilities of every type and description were built throughout the United States and Canada. Not since the 1960s when baseball began its major expansion has there been such a boom in new facilities. The decade began with the construc- tion of New Comiskey Park in Chicago in 1991. The following construc- tion boom has continued unabated into the present. What explains this explosion in new design, concepts and construc- tion? It is more than the mere aging of structures (i.e., Wrigley Field is still going strong even though it dates back to 1916). Changes in the economics of the game explain much of the need for new facilities that generate more revenue that can then be retained by the team to pay ever-increasing player salaries. The specifics of the economics of modern professional sports are be- yond the scope of this article. Suffice it to say that the fundamental changes in all major professional sports in the United States resulting from player free agency, increased broadcast revenue, merchandise and other non-game revenue, and the conversion from family to corporate ownership of teams has made the financial bottom line just as important as the team's place in the standings.
