ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO

Special Collection Next Weekend May 21, 2008

Dear Friends in Christ,

On the weekend of June 7-8, 2008, we will begin the first special collection for the Re- tired Priests of the Archdiocese. We all know how much our ministry in the parishes depends upon the generosity of re- tired priests and, over the past ten years, I have been edified by the willingness of our retired priests to respond to the call to serve as temporary administrators of parishes, sometimes parishes undergoing great stress and suffering. Please join me in offering our retired priests words of appreciation and gratitude for their many years of priestly ministry. Over those same years, I have worked with the Priests' Retirement and Mutual Aid As- sociation (PRMAA) to take care of all our retired priests. The costs for healthcare, pre- scription drug coverage, and nursing home care continue to rise annually. We have not raised the pension for our retired priests in seven years. This special collection will help us continue our care for our retired priests. You may be aware that the December collection for Retired Religious is designated to provide only for Religious Orders. Archdiocesan priests do not receive any funds from this collection. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our retired priests for the ministry they do in the parishes of the Archdiocese. Our retired priests make possible an adequate schedule of Masses and sacraments for the faithful. Our retired priests who administer parishes have given new life to many communities. Please accept my thanks and my prayers. I am thankful to all of you for helping inaugurate this special collection for the retired priests of the Archdiocese. Your generosity and your prayers are a great affirmation of the work of our retired priests. You are in my prayers; please keep me in yours.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago Get your donations ready! All items should be in new or like-new condition, clean, complete with parts and in working order. Women's Summer Scripture Study All women are welcome to join the Women's Summer Scripture Study group. The group will read a new book from Susan Hill enti- tled "Closer Than Your Skin: Unwrapping the Mystery of Intimacy with God." Here's what others have said about this book: "Warning: Susan Hill has written a deceptive book. It looks like another woman-with-a- fragile-marriage-struggles-in-her relationship-with-God book. Yet, her life and spiritual experiences become compellingly honest and transparent." Cecil Murphey, co-author of "90 Minutes in Heaven, "Heaven Is Real," and more than 100 other books. In these incredible stories, you will see how one person found that God is not always content to wait for us to discover Him amid the clutter of life. Instead, when we simply hold out our hands, He illuminates our ordinary world and gives us new eyes to see. "Closer Than Your Skin" traces the journey of an ordinary Christian who longed to move beyond the trappings of faith to genuine life with God. Her story reveals how to overcome the obstacles that most often block such intimate connection. Through this remarkable account, you will gain tangible insight into what a daily, vibrant com- panionship with the Creator really feels like once you wake up to the eternal reality all around you To participate, please purchase "Closer Than Your Skin: Unwrapping the Mystery of Intimacy with God" by Susan D. Hill in advance of the first session (June 10th.) It is available at Ama- zon.com , and Barnes and Noble book stores.

The group will meet for seven weeks on Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m., starting Tuesday, June 10th, at the Barrington Area Library, to discuss 2-3 chapters per week. To join the group, please contact Mary Sneed at 847.756.4235 or Debbie Adreani at 847.382.5132.

First Saturday Devotions In John Paul II's Apostolic letter on the Ro- Welcome New Members sary, the Pope urged us to "discover the Ro- Jennifer and Michael Nabong sary in the light of Scripture, in harmony with (Carrera) the liturgy and in the context of our daily Deidre and Timothy Towster lives." The Holy Father referred to the Ro- (Gwyneth) sary of Mary as the sweet chain linking us to Lucy and Henry Towster God. May we contemplate the meaning and (Michelle, Michael) the depth of the Holy Father's words as we pray the Rosary following the 8:15 a.m. Mass on Saturday, June 7th.

Euthallama upciatc- Oregon was the first state to legalize physician-assisted suicide. Now Washington and Colorado may follow in the November elections. Suicide proponents have started in the states where they believe the climate will be most favorable. The group Compas- sionate Choices is spearheading the drive in Colorado and Washington. A few years ago, the Hemlock Society failed in its effort to pass physician-assisted sui- cide in California. They were smart enough to change their name to fit our current times. Their new name is Compassionate Choices, which sounds so much better. The Oregon Death with Dignity Act was passed in November 1994 but was tied up in court challenges until 1997. Then Oregon became the first state to allow a competent, terminally-ill adult to obtain a physician's prescription for drugs to end his/her life. Since then, 341 people have been reported to have died from assisted suicide. In 2007 the number of reported deaths rose to 49. The most frequently stated end of life concerns were: loss of autonomy (100%), de- creased ability to participate in the activities that made life enjoyable (86%), and loss of dignity (86%). NONE of the people who died by assisted suicide were referred for a psychiatric or psychological evaluation, which is a required safeguard in the law. In fact, a survey several years ago revealed that the majority of physicians in Oregon ad- mitted that they could not recognize clinical depression. The rationale used to enact the law was that patients would be spared from needless pain and suffering. Ironically, the statistics show that pain and suffering were not even mentioned. What is confirmed is that these people were abandoned by their families, friends and by society. Please pray that the cancer in Oregon does not spread to Washington and Colorado, and please remember to visit the sick.

12 Saint Anne School

Mission Statement Saint Anne School, in partnership with home, church, and community, is dedicated to the formation and education of each child in spirit, mind, and body. We strive to "teach as Jesus did" as we proclaim the gospel, build community, and serve others. Our school community is rich in Catholic val- ues and academic excellence, empowering our students to discover their God-given gifts and to use them as leaders of the Church and society. Philosophy Saint Anne School, as an active ministry of Saint Anne Parish, the Archdio- cese of Chicago, and the Catholic Church, exists to impart and promote our Catholic faith to future generations.

We believe that our parents, as primary educators, working in positive part- nership with parish and school, create a faith community that inspires its members to live as Jesus lived.

We believe that our teachers nurture each child's unique gifts, strengthen the faith formation and academic growth of the whole person, and prepare students to become conscious of and responsive to the diversity of God's creation.

By integrating the knowledge, faith, and values they gain here, Saint Anne students will think critically, discover a love of learning, further social justice, and deepen their relationship with God.

BY SISTER LAURETTA LEIPZIG, PASTORAL ASSOCIATE AND DIRECTOR OF ADULT EDUCATION Do Not Procrastinate Recall the Gospel where the apostles asked Jesus to increase their faith. They felt that they needed more faith in order to do what Jesus asked them to do. Jesus re- minded them that they already had enough to move a mulberry tree. They were pro- crastinating in their faith. We are all good at procrastinating. We will wait until tomorrow when we have more energy, more time, more money or more whatever. In the meantime, we do not use what energy, time and money we already have. Is God giving us a call? Are we looking for confirmation that this call is indeed coming from God? Are we awaiting a great event that will confirm that God is speak- ing to us? We do not have to wait for the big, loud voice; we can answer the soft whis- per of God. Let us not procrastinate in our spirituality. Let us not put off a conversation with God because we do not have the right ritual or form of prayer. Our own personal prayers are just as good as the memorized prayers we once learned. Let us not put off the service and compassion we can give because we do not know the perfect words to offer to another or the best way or place to give of our talents. While we await "perfection" in what we do, we cannot sit back and do nothing. St. Paul tells Timothy to stir into flame the gift God has already given us to do his work. This week let us use what the Lord has already given us. When we begin to re- spond to God's call, when we begin to use our talents, God will bless us even more. We can then move on to the bigger and better things because we started with the smaller endeavors.

Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time, 2008 (85A) First Reading: Deuteronomy 1:18, 26-28, 32 (USCCB) Moses told the people, 18 "Take these words of mine into your heart and soul. Bind them at your wrist as a sign, and let them be a pendant on your fore- head 26" I set before you here, this day, a blessing and a curse: 27 a blessing for obeying the commandments of the LORD, your God, which I enjoin on you today; 28 a curse if you do not obey the commandments of the LORD, your God, but turn aside from the way I ordain for you today, to follow other gods, whom you have not known. 32 Be careful to observe all the statutes and decrees that I set before you to- day." Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 31:2-3, 3-4, 17, 25 LORD, be my rock of safety. Second Reading: Romans 3:21-25, 28 (USCCB) Brothers and sisters, 21 Now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, though testified to by the law and the prophets, 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction; 23 all have sinned and are deprived of the glory of God. 24 They are justified freely by his grace through the redemption in Christ Je- sus, 25 whom God set forth as an expiation, through faith, by his blood, to prove his righteousness because of the forgiveness of sins previously commit- ted, 28 For we consider that a person is justified by faith apart from works of the law. Gospel: Matthew 7:21-27 (USCCB) 21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not drive out demons in your name? Did we not do mighty deeds in your name?' 23 Then I will declare to them solemnly, 'I never knew you. Depart from me, you evildoers.' 24 "Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. 25 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock. 26 And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand. 27 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And it collapsed and was completely ruined."

So What? What is the meaning for us of choos- ing action over simply hearing the word(s) of God? We are, after all, an action oriented culture — just looks at the "resumes we present" when we apply for admission to school, to prospective employers, even what we present to prospective spouses! What more, then, can the Lord expect of us from us, in other words, what is the meaning of "doing the will of my Father in heaven"? (7:21) 21 Other Happenings
